CG1: Monarch Domination Variant

Nice turns Evincar! Really pulled us out of a jam there---bad troop movement could have been disasterous. I was going to suggest pillaging the Iron to Greece, but you did that, and we are no longer at war. Very lucky about the rep though.

I'm very happy we got the GL; I thought a cascade might take it out. That is very good, b/c most of the islands will probably be connected by sea, so we keep them to ourself :D! I have mixed feelings about whether to go Monarchy or Republic. B/c we have the GL, we can colonize most of the islands ourselves, so ancient and early medieval wars will probably not be necessary. So...I suggest Republic, but its Erik's call. One thing is for sure: we need min TWO defenders per city. We can't have another military crisis like we had.

I was just doing my laundry when I realized why our rep isn't ruined.

When Rome declared war on us, they automatically broke our deal. Therefore, there were no rep consequences, or if any, against Rome. When you destroyed Rome's roads, you weren't breaking a deal, b/c it was already broken. The sudden problem in happiness can probably be explained this way.

Hey, is the iron back?

I cehck diplo screens. The Zulu have Monarchy. We can buy it for literature and incense. I do so, because otherwise they will prolly demand it, and we cant really get monarchy for literature, can we? For Incense, Literature and... 14 gold we get wmap and monarchy.
To quote a sig: This is almost too eas... aah, crap!
2 Chinese cities, 1 roman on an island to the west.

I notice Rome has Construction. But for Monarchy Seizure only offers wmap and 20 gold. China better there. For Monarchy, Construction and wmap and 50 gold!

I sold Philosphy to Japan for 17 gold. Everyone else had it.

Then Incense to ROme for 20 gold. I sold out a lotta stuff here.

Established embassies in Rome and China.
Rome will complete the Great Wall next turn!!!
Beijing is size 1, unhappy guy, anarchy.

I cut science rate off. Only Currency and Republic left in ancient age. If tech goes too fast, the AIs will all get caravels.

After all this I hit enter.

The zulu demand construction. I cave. I really do not want a war now. He was not bluffing- I can tell it by his response.

Turn 1: Galley built. I start a spear. The plan is spear, settler, library, galley. Arbela builds spear, I disband it to start on a barracks. Galley sent off.

China wants an alliance against japan. Nope.

Turn 2: Galley moves.
Turn 3: Galley unloads.
Turn 4: Susa builds galley, starts settler. We get the iron back! What happened here? I investiagte Athens, they have 6 culture more than us. STrange.
Turn 5: 50 AD. The iron becomes greek again. Antioch founded by 2 wheat, a bonus grass and an iron.
Turn 6: Culture expansion at Arbela! I notice somthing... Who has been playing with the editor??? Workers are taking half the normal time!
Turn 7: Persepolis build library. Spear started. Library complete in Pasargadae, settler started.
Turn 8: Decline wmap trade from rome.
Turn 9: Spear->Settler. in Persep. Rax->Spear in Arbela.
Turn 10: Susa builds settler. Start a library. I leave the empire in fairly good shape. The game is pretty much underway now, 3 island being settled and a galley going to wards a 4th. East of Susa, with a horse tile.

I propose to build a Fortress line in all our borders with the Romans. We are likely to suffer more attacks, and some fortresses could help. We can secure key location, and make good use of the ZoC to weaken enemy Legions.

I haven't been playing with the editor...but aren't Persians industrious? ;)

Ok everyone play 10 from now on, as the island grabbing phase will get heated up. I couldn't easily tell from your report, but did you settle 3 islands? If so, that is good. Hopefully the GL (or another wonder) will spot all that damn culture battling. I honestly did not intend that, but it is an interesting twist. :p

Evincar, I second the idea to build fortresses. Just after all the jungle is cleared, OK? I also hope (and if you didn't) propose to send at least one worker to one of the larger islands, and build our FP in one of the larger islands. Our four-city core makes a good and developed FP spot MANDATORY.

On foreign policy: China and Japan are fighting AGAIN? That is second or third war in the game. And they both have knight replacements, which makes things interesting. We'll see who lives.

I meant, 3 islands are settled. I made a city on the big island to the west, WHIP THE LIBRARY there. I have a galley going east to a horse tile. Sparta is greek, on the isle S of us, and Japan/China have settled a big island to the north- a 1 tile gap there. So we have 1 island settled, and a second coming.

As for editor, it seems to be more than just the Industrious bonus.

(1) 1 defender will stay in each city. So i mm Susa to give Spear in 4 with less growth. Unload settler and Warrior in southeast, island is 3-tile but has Horses.

(2) Japan and China sign peace treaty (yeah right!). Settler in Persepolis (to Galley), aother ordered. Found Tarsus, Worker ordered With two units there the island will be un-attackable.

(3) China starts Hanging Gardens. The iron is ours for the moment. Make notice: do build vet Warriors if we loose it again, then we can upgrade whenever we get it back. Now, Immortals ordered in Susa and Arbela so we can trigger GA whenever wE want it. Galley with two settlers starts eastwards, plan 1 city near Cumae, the second guy will go there if we can't find another island. Island in the southeast discovered. Still, I want two Immortals before I order another settler. Persepolis switched to Hanging gardens - we can outrace the Chinese anytime. Switch from Great Lib may be a problem here though. If soon, then it doesn't matter since we can switch to Collosseum (need culture) os later to Sun Tzus :D

(4) settler lands next to Cumae.

(5) Gordium founded. Can now build FP. Galley sights shallow waters further west.

(6) Get Monthesim for free. How I love being scientific. -3 Gold gets us 30 turns, +11 40, nothing in between. decide on the money. 1 scientist gets us +14 gOLD @ =5 - go for that. 2nd settler lands on nice island with lots of bonus-grass and a wheat. Looks larger - there's mountains. Sell Currency to Alex for Wm and 5 G, Construction to Caesar for Wm and 5 - they'd get it fro other AIs anyways. Then, no profitable deals possible.

(7) Bactra founded, ironis mined and in use now - hanging gardens in 30 instead of 38.

(8) 2 Immortals finished, two settlers ordered. island west looks huge - isthmus to another part found. Galley will go on exploring. Other Galley is set to block passage east to non-Lighthouse Galleys, can get to Susa in 1 turn to pick up settler.

(9) island west has western desert appendage :( was hoping for more wheat.

(10) Aley gets Construction for Wm and 5 G - better we get the money than China. World circumnavigation is ALMOST achieved - another island in the west prooves to be probably the same as the one in southeast.

We might think about a revolution, then an attack on someone to trigger GA. Rome has units out - but in jungle. Zulus have iron - could get nasty - but maybe buy China into it? Then, we'd get hanging gardnes for sure an thus secure the iron.

Okay, I have the .sav and will play as soon as I can.

About the GA-war, I suggest Greece if they are still around ;). They are apparently the weakest nation around, with only one city on the mainland. If they have no units roaming around, I guess we could just go for Romans. Their units are in jungle, but their lack of iron makes them an excellent target. If we do go to war with them, remember to keep Zulu out of it, b/c they are the only other Iron-enabled nation near us.

I think our game plan for founding cities should be to maximize culture production in those cities. If we can get one city to take a 3-city island through culture, that is good. Also, I suggest a 3-6 city island for our FP.

CG

300AD (0) - Revolution!

310AD (1) - Anarchy, no production. Starting another fortress.

320AD (2) - Zulu complete Hanging Gardens in Zimbabwe. We were nowhere near finishing it. The island to the East has Iron on it, along with a goody hut.

330AD (3) - We change to Great Library. Spot another goody hut on that island.

340AD (4) - We enter Monarchy and are running +11gpt with 0 science. I change to +7 with Feudalism in 36 turns.

350AD (5) - I spot another island east of the one with the goody huts. Moving one galley back to pick up settlers.

360AD (6) - This new island appears to be alot of tundra. Fortress building continues.

370AD (7) - Waiting for settlers.

380AD (8) - Rome is making me nervous, a couple of archers are moving towards us. Moved some spearmen into our new forts.

390AD (9) - Rome backs off, must just be patrolling. Settler loaded and on its way.

400AD (10) - We should build another galley or two. Settler is waiting for a ride in Susa.

The .sav is here:

Good job Dredd. Harbor on the iron island is priority, b/c it can solve our iron swapping with Greece. I say we build a nice Immortal army for our possible war with Rome, plus the other galleys to speed our expansion.

@Judge Dredd

I noticed cgannon64 have this problem before. He can't download a game in the .sav format. You want to attach as a .zip.

No, LK, this one worked. I guess my computer is just picky...;)

BTW, this is my "got it" post. I'll play tonight, post tonight.

OK, here are my ten turns:

(0) Check around at the tech scene, and Mao won't budge about giving us Engineering, so we keep Mono to ourselves (just realized how funny this statement is ;). I just noticed now the effects always-war had on Japan: they are down to one city and falling.

(1) Fortress built, Irrigate around Pasargadae to let it grow now that we are a Monarchy. Another island discovered, but it is an iceball. Bactra builds warrior, starts on settler

(2) Nothing much.

(3) Another iceball discovered, another fortress built. Based on the fortresses we have, I assume we are building them all around our borders, is this so? I don't know whether we should fill them all up though: that is 18 units!

(4) Exploration reveals that one of the iceballs has a goody hut on it. I don't know whether this would be worth it, b/c we can no longer pop techs (we are in the Medievial ages).

(5) All those damn Greek units keep on shuffling back and forth, its really annoying. A settler dropped on one of the larger islands, The one to the East. Mao demands Dyes. I think I refused him---I hit enter, thinking it would temporarily exit the trade screen so I could check our island defenses, and he has stopped calling. I believe I refused.

(6) Now Shaka demands Incense! This is really ticking me off, but since we have our fortified border almost done, I take a gamble and say no. World peace is sustained. I decide to move our three defenders on the border of Rome to Zulu border, as he poses more of a threat. Sidon founded on the large island to the west with two goody huts and iron (we should name these, it is getting hard to tell them apart!). Goody hut popped on Bactra-island, we get 50 gold. Settler built in Arbela, I wake our fortified settler in Susa and send him to Arbela. Galley will be done in 6 turns: send them to the island in the west, south of Bactra.

(7) Archers keep on roaming Roman jungle. Our reorganization of border-soldiers makes Zulu border guarded; they'll need an ROP to get to our lands.

(8) Spearman built in Susa, I send him to Pasargadae (two warriors guarding a city? Not in this variant...).

(9) Chinese send galley into Gordium territory. Looking for trouble? Probably not, he doesn't have the GL :P. Two more fortresses built on Greek border.

(10) Another fortress built. The warrior on Bactra island is going to pop a goody hut, the galleys by Bactra island are going to explore. I believe this is it for me, although I may have played one too many or one less (I haven't played a SG in a week, forgot about keeping notes in the beginning!).

Nothing too exciting, just settled another town, moved the defensive line, found a few iceballs, almost got in two wars.

And the save:

Ok I got it. I wonder...will we EVER be able to build something in the outer islands? combining the magnificient land and the low corruption...
Maybe rush libraries just to fill them, and keep some garrison.
