hi all

well, changing to republic in civ3 is certainly different than the other versions. whew! -what happened? i'm was expecting the usual general increase in most things, like commerce and such. what do i get? cities rioting, hardly any money coming in - with despotism i had science at 60% and still loads of money. now i'm at 40% and still making a loss.

it's all gone pete tong!!

any suggestions would be much appreciated
thanks

Depending on if you are playing Civ3 or Conquests, things vary a little. The most important thing is, when changing to Republic, have a good number of cities able to produce well.

In Civ3 and PTW, if you have a huge military, you will be killed by maintenance costs. If you have an average military, and plenty of good cities, with marketplaces and such, you should find yourself in very good shape after recovering from the anarchy period.

In Conquests, IIRC, Having too large a military hurts even more.

Have as many roaded tiles as possible. Commerce bonus in republic makes every tile producing at least one gold produce one more. So make sure to road every zero-gold-producing tile.

I always experience a depression after changing to republic. But that's okay, as it doesn't last very long. Just by removing the tile penalties experienced in Despotism/Anarchy, my cities tend to grow quicker and I can start pumping out workers to road/improve the tiles.

I prefer to do it sooner because of the longer anarchy involved with having more cities.

I have a question about republic, well, war weariness in republic actually. If you get WW points from fighting Civ A, but then you sign peace with Civ A and immediately declare war on Civ B, do you have any WW points from the first war? Or is WW points tied in with a civ?

WW points is kept seperate for each civ so changing target once WW becomes too bad is a good tactic that I often use.
