Now i dont have many of these in my music collection and was wondering if anybody could reccomend some.

Now i dont particularly want coldplay related things as i dont want it to be depressing chillout.

So anyone?

get hello nasty from the Beastie boys .... after the first 6 or 7 songs it becomes a lounge setting chillout ambiance!

I'm no real expert on specific bands, but I've found the following songs pretty good to relax to recently:

Rob Dougan - Clubbed to Death (you can find it on the first Matrix Soundtrack)
Boards of Canada - Dayvan Cowboy
Buddha Bar iv - Tibet
Alabama 3 - Woke up this Morning
Moulin Rouge Soundtrack - Bolero

I'd be quite happy to hear other chillout stuff as well, so I'm hoping this thread expands quite a bit :)

@warpus - That Dayvan Cowboy song is the only Boards of Canada song I have, is the rest of their stuff along similar lines?

well i thought songs which are chillout are generally ina genre of themselves regardless.

theres the kooks-naieve and a couple of their other songs

oh and the jose gonzalez song-heartbeats, from the advert i find very relaxing.

so songs along them lines i guess

Somewhat.

Music has the right to Children is my favourite album and a classic - I highly recommend that you check it out.

After music..children they released Geogaddi, which was more rough and up-beat. There are some chill tracks on there, but not nearly as much as music..children.

The Campfire Headphase is their most "mainstream" release to date, but I would argue that it does return them to their roots a bit.

So, having said all that, check out Music has the right to Children.

Any Nick Drake songs are good for chilling.

I'm mostly into classical, though, and there are tons of great "chill out" pieces there. The Vaughan Williams "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" is near the top of that list, as the Adagietto from Mahler's 5th symphony.

Bob Marley
Miles Davis
John Coltrane
Johnny Hartman

Great chill music.

Bedouin Soundclash are really good, as is Buena Vista Social Club

Era is divine when it comes to chillout
Rob Dougan's Clubbed to death is also a must have
The soundrack of Diablo 2 - perfect chillout music
Moby
Mike Oldfield
And this thing - i am not joking, it is very relaxing and very good background music.

music i like to listen to when relaxing (what i assume you mean by chillout music)

anything by sarah harmer, norah jones
some of the tragically hip's slower stuff (wheat kings, scared, greasy jungle, etc)
cowboy junkies

oh ya, and all those (except norah jones) are good Canadian acts!

Hooverphonic plays nice laid back "trip hoppish" music. Nice female vocals, try the Blue Wonder Power Milk album.
Kristin Hersh, from the Throwing Muses, has made a bunch of nice solo albums. Usually just she and her guitar.

Second the recommendations for Kruder & Dorfmeister, Hooverphonic...
I'd also like to mention Air, DJ Shadow, Massive Attack (Protection in particular) and Roisin Murphy's solo album Ruby Blue.

Steely Dan - Time out of Mind

However, I think Steely Dan might be an acquired taste, so listen to it a few times and then you'll like it.
Trivia: Mark Knopfler plays guitar on that song.

Also try
Lee Ritenour - A Little Bumpin'
Lee Ritenour - Water to Drink
Lee Ritenour - Wes Bound
(This is just music)

Elliott Smith, Death Cab for Cutie, Mazzy Star, Bright Eyes are some of my favorites.
