Description: Balanced on the cusp of utter annihilation, the Urkatchnians must be either very hated, or very blessed by the gods. Or perhaps, both. For indeed they occupy an island which is paradise (or must surely seem so to everyone nearby), in the middle of hell: thus they seemed doomed to utter isolation. The island of Urkatchna is very cold, naturally: subzero weather is not uncommon, and floes of pack ice are even more common. Icebergs float by occasionally, daunting in their size. But the environment is unearthly: heated by a fire from the bowels of the earth, warm freshwater springs occur naturally all over the island, creating a warm lake, perfectly clear, in the center of the island from which they drink their water, and fast flowing rivers down the sides of the rugged slopes of the island. The mists from the waters shroud the land in clouds, and from the highest point can be seen rolling waves and ice of an unearthly nature: a bright blue hue and ancient. Isolated as they are, they have discovered ways to survive: their ships are either very flexible and can survive the ice floes, or very tough and can shatter them; their fishing is superb and allows them to support a moderate population. And the baths in their main city would surely be a wonder of the world anywhere else: here they are heaven on earth, for the warm, steaming pools can sustain many a soul who had landed afoul of the harsh cold. Their well-made buildings survive even the fierce, bitter storms, and their hardy people have begun colonizing islands. Alas, when the strange men, with their massive ships come prowling, their fierce cannon shaking the very earth, the people of this nation may find themselves hard pressed: and the deathly pathogens these invaders carry may ruin many lives. But that has not yet come to pass, and perhaps it never will: perhaps the fierce people of the far south may come to build something of an empire.

That's in the far, far southeast.
