Cities: Skylines - Paradox Interactive Makes A SimCity

There are also gazillions of maps people have already made on steam workshop, so check those out too.

You can also use this website here: http://terrain.party/

With it, you can use a heightmap of anywhere in the world and import that into your map editor for a fairly realistic map.

It's the same map: I just renamed it. My top tip for water on maps is to just set river beds to sea level. Trying to create realistic slopes for rivers usually ends up making them extremely turbulent.

My main issue is moreso trying to get the rivers to flow the right way. :(

To elaborate, I used a heightmap I generated from terrain.party. I first raised the sea level a bit, then added a water source/origin or two, but the water doesn't seem to be flowing the right way. Or, rather, flowing in any consistent direction at all.

Hey I linked that first! YOU'RE DEAD

Thanks @cybrxkhan for the advice!

Aachen now has 16K population! I came up with a solution to the traffic problem at Oil Paradise, it now looks like this:

Meanwhile, the western part of town keeps growing...

And the east as well:

But Aachen's biggest attraction has become its new Fernsehturm, just like the one in Berlin...

Kudos at the guy that uploaded this to the Steam Workshop!

SteamSpy is estimating Skylines at just over 900,000 copies sold currently. I'm impressed. That's well on pace to beat Sim City 5. Now if only I weren't hooked on Half Life and Civ...

I've realized I've downloaded so many maps, it takes me forever to scroll through all of them. :|

My city is now at ~135k-140k, and I really don't have any more space left except a small rural area I want t okeep rural. I guess I'll have to say farewell to this city soon.

No problem. Just remember that it's likely you'll have to bulldoze and redo parts of the highway later in your city's lifetime. This is inevitable even if you have the best road layout.

It's close to 1 million, damn.

This is the current progress of my city inspired by London, Ontario, Canada. The city owns a lot of land south of the 401 highway, but there isn't really much there.. 99% of the city is north of there.. so it was weird starting in the south and building up, but I'm making pretty good progress.

It's built on the same map, the highway going west to east is the 401, the highway connecting it from the west is the 402, those and the river are pretty much exactly like they are in real life. Highbury street, which is the highway running north-south, in real life ends before the river and converts to a major throughfare type street. I'm keeping it a highway though, and eventually building a ring road, which real-life London doesn't have.

Downtown is the most accurate in terms of major roads, but a lot of things are changed for the sake of efficiently - real London wasn't really designed with any sort of plan it mind. I have an entertainment district in the same place, most major roads downtown, some shopping districts are in similar places, but a lot of it is completely different from the real city.. in fact, I would say, most of it is very different.

I had to buy land to the east, so that I can dump my sewage far from the city. Anything else leads to polluted water downtown.. and.. well, my fix has issues - it's flooding land in the area, due to the sheer number of sewage being pumped out.. and I have nowhere else to put it, except to buy more land to the east.. except that I should be expanding to the north. I already put up a dam, so we'll see what happens.

I left a lot of the rail lines exactly like they are in real life.. but re-purposed some of it and added more rail for an internal people-moving LRT type system and bits of it to bring in tourists on a separate line. I would have taken it all out and started from scratch, but I want the city to have at least some of that .. "London vibe"

Of course the following is nothing at all like London.. (except for the rail lines.. the IKEA is definitely something we don't have here)

Spoiler :

My transportation network, with the train station in pretty much the same spot as it is in real life, acting as a hub. (Right where it says Downtown). Just to the left, beside it, is a train station where tourists get off to see the amazing things London has to offer.

The real London of course doesn't have a subway line or LRT, but this game opens some doors..

Green and red are subway lines, I run the green line along Richmond/Wellington streets, the main north-south throughfare here.. (future planned LRT route in real life).. and the red line is one of the only diagonal streets we have.

Yellow is LRT, on the left it follows the actual rail line south, while on the right of downtown I've built new rail to make it into a U-shaped line. This might become a problem in the future, as my city relies on pedestrian walkways and bus-less mass transit to move people around.. so far.. Traffic problems are non-existent so far, but I think with so many people using public transit, that central hub is going to get overwhelmed.. but.. I'll deal with that when it happens, in the proper London, Ontario type manner.

The blue LRT line is going to be a U turning in the other direction - so far the only stop is the entertainment district. .. I guess, having looked at that website, I should actually rename it. Good excuse to fire up the game and keep building. ;)

Is anyone by chance using the 25 tile mod? And if so, what's your performance and your computer specs?

My city is almost filled up, at ~145k people, and I'm considering just using the 25 tile mod but my gut instincts are telling me my pc won't be able to handle much more than what I already have.

@warpus: nice job with London. I can't stand roundabout interchanges, though, for some reason, they just look so weird to me. :p

How many copies has the last SimCity sold? Just for reference's sake..

From: wiki

SimCity sold over 1.1 million copies in its first two weeks, 54 percent of those sales were of the download version of the game.[127] As of July 2013 the game has sold over two million copies.[128]

Skylines isn't doing so bad for a game that doesn't have a major existing franchise backing it. The game has a very vibrant modding community, and it will likely have lasting appeal and decent sales volume like SimCity 4, Skyrime, and CivIV all did.

I have a feeling that they chose the name they did "Cities: Skylines", because they're going to use this title as a springboard to other ones, or potentially updates, sequels and/or DLCs.. "Cities: Roadways", "Cities: Farmtown", "Cities: Transit Manager"..

Probably not those exact titles, but I think this might very well be the beginning of something amazing. I mean, it already sort of is, but the incredible financial success of this title, not to mention the incredibly quick growth of the modding community & assets, should push Paradox & CO to keep developing. Their Cities in Motion titles were a good start, it probably taught them quite a bit about several aspects of a city building game.. With all these things now in place, I can't wait to see what they'll work on next.

I remember seeing some developer stream where they said they tried to come up with a "Cities in [Something]" name, one of the suggestions being "Cities in Function"... Cities: Skylines is probably better..

Cities in Motion would have been a pretty great name for the game if they hadn't already used it, really.

Oh, and the Train stations in the game already have a logo for Cities: Railways, hint of future content I hope. :D

A few days ago Totaly Moo mentioned on the forums that a big update is coming in about a month, that should include tunnels, wall-to-wall buildings, and some other big surprise. The other big surprise had been hinted at elsewhere, such as one interview they had with CEO Mariina (I think), who said it was gonna be something awesome and not what anyone has been expecting.

I saw someone put it like this (paraphase): ~10 nerds led by a girl with pink hair managed to do what Maxis, with a massive advertising campaign, an esteemed legacy and background, and lots of money, could not. Of course, right now CS sales have not surpassed SC2013's, but I'm sure the gap will close sooner or later.

A PI person (Shams, I think) suggested they might consider doing a Sims-like game in the far future. Of course, he might've just been joking around, but who knows. I get the feeling that a few people are thinking Colossal Order might end up filling the shoes of Maxis and end up becoming the next king of simulation games. At this point, though, it's too early to tell - CO is still a very small "indie" company that, in my opinion, seems very much dependent on PI at the moment (not that that's a bad thing, it seems to me like their relationship is very good and beneficial to both parties), so exactly how they'll evolve is yet to be seen, but I do look forward to the possibilities.

I would guess that at some point we might also get citizen and vehicle editing added to the asset editor, though this wouldn't be "the big surprise" ofc. In the pre-release version there were already button icons for them that did nothing when clicked and they were then removed with the space for them still left open in the asset editor on release, seemingly so they can be re-added.

Edit: More neat modding stuff on its way. Almost wish I could go forwards in time a year or two to see all the crazy stuff that can be done with the game. Cities: Spiderman anyone?

They have seen the money and they are going to follow it, I think. They have also seen the huge embrace of the community of what they have built in such short time. I don't think there's any going back now.

One day.. maybe they'll even remake SimAnt.
