I have issues with sickness too. Early on in the game, get corn, wheat, etc. and build a granary right after researching pottery. After that try and build the aqueduct like you did before. Try to snag the Hanging Gardens if you can! Make sure when you build new cities you don't put them near places that would cause sickness!! You already have enough problems with the biggest city. Keep building farms with corn, wheat, and other foods to increase health if you built the granary. In the later game research medicine and build hospitals and recycling centers to increase helath and prevent loss of health becuase of buildings. Try eviormentalism and your city should be pretty healthy. Someitmes the citizens get less angry when you cure their sicknesses. Just gather luxury materials like wine and ivory to stop angryness. Thats all I can give... Also don't build citites where nukes were fired... Unless the fallout was scrubbed. I'm "kind of" new... I played Civ 1... It was so hard...

If the city is growing, check on the city screen whether it is reaching its "happiness"/ "healt" limit: an increase in size increases the number of red and green faces.

When the number of red faces is above the number of yellow faces on the left, you'll get "overcrowded". Likewise, when the number of green faces is above the number of white faces, you'll get desease.

So, even before this happens, you may switch some of the city pop from food-abundant tiles to less food-abundant tiles like mines or plains/cottages, and/or create some specialists, to stagnate the city growth.

To increase the "limits", you may get access to resources, build certain city improvements, change civics, etc.

There are a few different ways to overcome unhappiness.

1. Hooking up any luxury resources within your cultural borders. Some of these resources can be hooked up very early, gold requires mining, ivory requires hunting, others you have to wait longer for, eg silk requires calendar, wine requires monarchy, gems will almost certainly require iron working.

2. Switching to the slavery civic and pop rushing. Don't use the whip if what you're building will only kill one pop point, you will stay in unhappiness.

3. Switching to the hereditary rule civic once you've researched monarchy means that every military unit in a city gives 1 happy face.

4. The ability to trade with other civs will mean you can trade for some luxuries that you haven't got yourself.

What everyone else said.

Plus, get religion. Either found your own, or inherit it from a neighbor. Every city with your STATE religion gets a happy. Plus, you can build temples for extra happy. More than one religion means more temples, thus more happy!!

Unhealthyness is not as bad as unhappiness. With unhappy citizens you want to fix the problem asap, but with sick citizies you can limp along for awhile if you have to.

Arg, this is something they really need to address in an upcoming patch because so many people post about this, and it also took me the longest time to figure out that "crowded" simply meant "default unhappiness for city size" when I first played. This is utterly unintuitive and, like the "gold vs. commerce" confusion can be fixed extremely easily. (this goes for several of the other reasons for happiness and unhappiness)
