Civ 5 Campaign Edition on Mac App Store

See my comments above. I really don't think that any difference you might see would be enough to warrant a switch from BootCamp. If you don't think the Steam/Mac version plays well enough then the Campaign edition will not satisfy you either.

I have a Mid 2010 13" MBP with 320M GPU. I tried loading up a 1945 AD end-of game save from the GOTM community (Science victory). Standard map size, 8 civs, 18 city states. I have left Civ5 in its default minimum graphics mode. Unfortunately, I am currently running a new version of OS X that shall remain nameless on this Mac, so it may not be totally representative. However, just moving around the map is painful - animations are somewhat jerky; you can watch the tiles repaint one at a time when you scroll around ... Full screen seems better than windowed, but I wouldn't want to play a modern era game on this rig.

Like all AppStore downloads, it installs automatically, as a single bundle called /Applications/Civilization V Campaign Edition.app. The Assets are all buried in that bundle, so if you want to edit the mainmenu.lua file to enable manually installed mods, you'll find it at /Applications/Civilization V Campaign Edition.app/Contents/Home/assets/UI/FrontEnd/MainMenu.lua.

Now with Civ V being available in the AppStore, I thought I'd give it a try on my (not so old, but nevertheless below-minimum spec) MacBook Pro.

I wanted to edit the MainMenu.lua. I find it in the bundle, I opened it, edited it - but I wasn't able to save it (no permission). I quickly changed all the permissions, both of the whole app and of the single file. But I am still not able to save it. I then saved it outside of the bundle, but I was not able to put it into the bundle...

I'm sure this is a read/write-permission problem - do you guys have an idea, what to do? I searched the whole web without an answer...

Thanks!
a.

Has someone tested if the performance of Civ 5 Campaign Edition is better than Steam version when using 320M GPU (eg. macbook pro mid 2010)?

Would be ready to download this at once if the performance was considerably better than Steam one. Until that happens it seems bootcamp is the only way to go with mid 2010 macbook pro 13.

Downloaded campaign edition, and it seems that performance with 320M has improved after Mac OS X update 10.6.8 and game is now quite playable. However scrolling is still quite sluggish but tolerable. Hopefully next Civ patch or 320M driver update will fix that.

One intresting observation with Civ 5 and 320M is that it seems graphic performance is better when using medium setting rather than low settings.

Btw good thing with Civ 5 Campaign Edition is you don't have to deal with sluggish Steam DRM anymore and it saves 1-2% of valuable cpu time too ;)

I'm pleased to hear that the 10.6.8 graphics enhancements have worked for Civ5 as well. I suspected they might when improved benchmark performance was reported for Quake and Halo etc. This should affect both Steam and AppStore versions, of course, as they run the same code.

hey guys i just bought civ 5 campaign edition but i don't know how to enable mods in my mac , can anyone help or give me the process of how its done? and what to edit on the mainmanu.lua ...also i wanted to ask if you guys know how to enable the debug thingy.
Thx

Hello, welcome :wavey:

Have you found the FAQ yet? The last question in the first post points you to this thread which covers your requirement.

What do you mean by the debug thingie?

Thanx. :) Oh ok i see it now... yea i wasn't looking for the FAQ i just posted the question on the first threat about civ 5 campaign so... i was wondering if like in the civ 5 campaign can we use cheats? kinda gets more interesting and hey i searched for a library on my mac but couldn't find it :( maybe is there like another folder?

Hey what do i edit to the .lua though? thats what i want to know ... what do i write to active the mod in that specific . lua after i open it?

If you are running the latest Mac OS X - Lion, then Apple has hidden the ~/Library folder. Hold down the Alt key and select Go in the Finder menu bar. You can then select Library in that menu.

The change to the .lua file is also described in a thread linked in Question 4 of the FAQ.

Note from the other link that you will probably have permissions problems when you try to save the edited file. You need to change permissions on bits of the application bundle. I use BBEdit, which has built in support for elevating privileges when saving files.

Hi again,
DO any of you know if there is a way to stay in one era, not advance in others in this game with ought using mods?

Many of the scenarios do just that. For the main game, you can choose a starting era, but you can't choose an ending era.

So there is no way of making the main game to end at a specific era?? like a change in the config or something?

People, if I want to download the gods and kings for the Mac, must I do this on the Apple Store? Because this editon doesn't work whit Steam. Am I right?

No, the Steam version of GnK will not work with the AppStore version of CiV. I had to purchase it via the AppStore itself.

You have to upgrade your Civ5 to Gods & Kings from the same place that you registered the original game - Steam or the App Store.

Of course, you can alternatively buy a new copy of both the game and its expansion from the other store.

There's only one review on the AppStore, and that says it crashes on impact. As a service to the Mac community, I'll spent hard earned cash and check it out as an "independent witless witness", and report back.

Now waiting for a 3 GByte download ....

[UPDATE]
It's downloaded, installed and running with no problems. I've posted a review to counter the single existing review. Maybe the guy has inadequate hardware. :dunno:

Those of you who object to clutter in your ~/Documents/ folder will be pleased to hear that it sets up a folder for Saves etc at
~/Library/Application Support/Civilization V Campaign Edition/

Hopefully this isn't a stupid question. I am having difficulty finding the application support file for Civ v. I command + shift + g then search ~/Library/Application Support/. I am supposed to find a folder called civ 5 camp ed in there, but there is no such folder. They have my other games, including civ iv. I don't understand where civ v could be...

That was a very early post. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then.

The Civ5 saves and mods are now in ~/Documents/Aspyr/Sid Meier's Civilization 5/. Maybe they moved it when they found that the hidden ~/Library folder was causing too many support calls.

The graphics quality on mine is absolutely HORRIBLE. High settings look EXACTLY like low-medium settings -- just that it bogs the computer down more!

I'm currently downloading the Windoze version to use in Bootcamp. This is the second "mac" game that will convince me to just get games on Windoze and run in Bootcamp. The first was Dirt2 ported by Feral. The only advantage of having the mac version is that I can easily command-tab out of the game when my boss comes walking by...

Must be your Mac. My Mac version runs fine. I run mine in Windows because of mod compatibility issues.
