Civ 7 - why doesn't it look or feel like Civ?

Interestingly all this talk of Humankind has got me wanting to play that game. I only played it briefly when it came out, I didn't like it. I wonder if any of the patches and updates have made that game any better. Can anyone comment if it got better at any point?
It got much, much better balance-wise and also some mechanics were updated in a good way. Still, it has its problems. But I have a lot of fun when playing one game every few months. It's just not the feeling that I want to start the next game right away. Vanilla Improvement Mod is a good addition. Don't bother trying the Together We Rule expansion, the game is better without it.

But my experience might differ: I have played HK for a few hundred hours, so I'm not one of the people who were appalled by it in the first place. In contrast, I was appalled by the two expansions to civ 6, and just now with the civ vii announcement started civ vi for the first time since Gathering Storm release week. And buried it again until February after two games :)

I think it's the combination of splitting the game into three distinct ages with a hard cut on the tech tree, having janky looking leaders screaming at each other, and decoupling civs from leaders that is making it not look like previous iterations in the franchise. If only one of these changes was introduced then Civ7 would still look recognizable, but having all three at once is what's making it very jarring to look at, at least for me. I also think the UI looks very sterile and cold when compared to Civ5 and Civ6.

No I haven't. I never said they were "paid off" that would imply Firaxis is directly paying streamers specifically not to say things, which isn't what I think is happening. What I have simply stated the objective fact of the matter. These streamer have business relations with game devolopers and recieve literal trips and early access to games as part of an advertising model which makes them inherently biased.
If it helps, my job pays for my work trips and I owe them literally zero bias whatsoever. It's a job. I like what I work on and like what I do (enough of the time) - technically speaking, that's bias.

But them asking me to go abroad for a strategically-important trip doesn't invoke any bias at all.

Honestly, logistically, it's a pain. The same for video games (speaking as someone who's been invited to local events in the UK for other publishers, in bygone times). I have two young kids now. Ain't got time for that.

If anything, my twenty-five years playing Civ engender more bias in me than anything that could possibly happen IRL. And that applies to all of us, as bias can be positive or negative!

I'm not imagining they are paid off or whatever but you will not catch any invited streamer hating on anything they've been invited to.
They'll say things like "I'm weary of this but..." And end up saying "I trust Ed Beach / FXs" or whatever.

Same thing happened with the live action ATLA netflix show (tangent but if you're aware you'll know)

None of the streamers Firaxis sent to their headquarters to play for three hours seemed excited about it. They almost seem defensive.

I hope at least the assets will not change, I mean that would be ultra super immersion breaking if all your buildings, districts etc would magically look different in just a single turn.

There's apparently a time jump between at least Antiquity and Exploration so it might be neat to hit "next turn" and you wake up 400 years later to overgrown ruins.

A lot of people on this very forum have said that. Are we discounting opinion just because it's positive?

Not at all, this is not what I said at all!
I'm saying this as critique of all invited public figures to basically anything.
They will never openly announce negative opinions and if they do they will sugarcoat it.

IF you dislike something you're going to irr on the side of caution that they will fix it rather than openly hate on something, or you'll never get invited to anything ever again.
It's just them playing safe and I don't blame them. In other words I'm just taking all invited opinions with a grain of salt.

I imagine if I was invited to a prestigious event with a new AAA title I might be slightly less mean in the reviews
Again, I'm saying this because it happens elsewhere too (I mentioned Netflix ATLA and I'm sure in other spots too)

Sure, but the examples you've given overlap with stuff posters here at saying. That doesn't suggest anything unique towards people invited anywhere.

All this talk is making me want to play Manor Lords, with the new update and I don't even like the game because it is far from finished, and it has no real challenge to it.

  • Civilization VII will allow for dramatic comeback wins in the final age of the game.
  • Director Ed Beach stresses that no player is ever out of a game of Civilization VII.
  • The new Ages system facilitates late-game comebacks.
In an interview with Future Games Show, Civilization 7 director Ed Beach revealed "You have a chance to win the game at any point. You're never really out of it." This is because of Civilization 7's new Ages system, where you select a new civilisation for each of the game's three ages, Antiquity, Exploration and Modern.
Beach describes 'sudden death' mechanics in the Modern Age where any player can snatch victory. He doesn't outline the specifics of this system, but does talk about how Civilization 7 has been constructed with comebacks in mind.

"In the final [Modern] age, you get a chance for that sudden death victory, to knock out the other players. Even if you were trailing previously, the chance to get that victory at the end is pretty much always there for you," Beach revealed.

I'm sorry but a business trip for a 9-5 desk job and a paid business trip from a corporation to advertise for streamers whose income and engagement revolves entirely around the hobby they are being granted early access rights are kind of incomparable.

Even then as an employee you do have a bias. You're not going to go on that business trips and talk badly about your employer to other clients while you're on the clock are you, are you? You're not going to go into your office and loudly talk crap about your employer within ear shot either. When these streamers turn on their camera to advertise early access games for us, they're on the clock too.

I hope this game does well, but as a humankind/Millenia Hybrid this will not be a Civ game.

No builders , No settlers as such , No mods , limited multiplayer , an insidious grey on grey UI , Tiny maps, hideous leader inter actions and puff a shameless cash grab that put's cram like Fortnight to shame

Civ VI was great because even though it looks new and pretty and mechanics are different at the end of the day you're still getting that settler out and plotting down a city and land and you're working that land to build an empire that lasted through the ages with your immortal ruler.

In civ7, you will also still start with a settler unit, make your first city, work it and build an empire with your immortal leader just like previous civs. The graphics may be new and there are new mechanics but the core is still the same as previous civs. So not sure why it does not feel like civ to you.

Moderator Action: This has been said before, especially to some people here: Discussings about shilling/impartiallity and so on need to be substantiated, otherwise we will consider it trolling.
Everyone is aware that these people do it for work/their channel/eternal fame, etc We know this. Keep it in mind. The rest of this discussion is pointless.
