Civ-lympics

I think you guys have misunderstood D.N. Pacem here. The berskers have amphibious attack ability, so they probably swim through water with heavy equipment on. Can any other unit (besides marines) do this? No. So, the berseks get the swimming edge.

yes, I know that but I have always had to use a boat to get them there... guess I just don't know the secret handshake.

my frigates win diving competition (they're always going under) and the guerrilla unit take gold for...

Spoiler :
most useless upgrade!

on a side note: we should have a true civ-lympics--lasting about the same time--with competitions like highest scoring game (in the 2-week or whatever span), best unit created, worst start, best screenshot, etc. You could also do more objective stuff like most prolific unit creator in the last 4 years (at least silver and bronze would be interesting), most games submitted to HoF, highest score in last year, and stuff like that.

Just an idea. :D

Are you sure the Guerrilla is the most useless upgrade, Againsttheflow? Well, just considering regular units it could well be, but otherwise there's:
*Impi to Pikeman???
*Gallic Sworsman to Medieval Infantry???
And there might be something with the Swiss Mercenary as well, but I've never played the Dutch, so I'm not sure.

You're looking at it from a slightly different angle. If indeed, we were talking about how much improvement over x unit y unit is then I would agree completely. I was looking at more the unit itself as a standalone upgrade, not worth the upgrade fee or shield cost if you ask me. In your examples the pikeman is usually good and when its debatable you can just wait for the next upgrade (at which point of course, the cost starts to look jy-normous). So yea, slightly different way to look at it.

I thought it was really funny. I thought I got the joke when you wrote it.

RE: the upgrade to guerrilla. speaking for myself. I always hated the fact that I spent a fortune building Swords when they were the bad boy on the block and all that money was just gone when the techs moved on. I have also found the unit very useful for defending workers as I develop acquired territory. They move at the same speed as my workers.

They use a boat, but they don't have to land the boat. The boat approaches, and the berserks jump off, swim ashore and attack from the beachhead.

I think Mounted Warrior to Knight is another bad upgrade, at least a bronze medal there for worst "upgrade". But since we are on the Berserk subject, Berserk to Guerilla would be my gold medal winner for worst upgrade. You gain zero offensively, you get a defensive improvement of 4, but a rifle gets you that, and you lose the Amphibious attack. Not exactly an impressive gain.

But since we are on the Berserk subject, Berserk to Guerilla would be my gold medal winner for worst upgrade.
Yeah, I had overlooked that one! That's an 'upgrade' I would never make. Also Jalevin thrower to Longbowmen I would not be keen on, since you lose the enslave ability. And Dromons probably 'upgrade' to common caravels? That would be another 'no'.

Dromons are good up until Ironclads if used properly, so yes, bad upgrade there. And JTs can even get barbarian slaves in the modern era, so that's another bad upgrade. It seems like the good UUs tend to suffer bad upgrades the most.

It seems natural that good UUs make for bad upgrades. I don't care for Gallic Sword to Medieval Infantry, for one thing. I keep all of my Gallic Swords even when MDI are available, and just train knigts. Gaining one point of offensive power is not worth losing the extra movement, even at zero cost, and GS can take on even Cavalry, at least on the offensive, and with luck and good management can be used against Muskets. As for Dromons, they're one of the best UUs in the game, and I keep them until approximately Ironclads myself.
