Civ V retail WON'T be in a box

PDFs are a pain to read. Try reading 200 pages of PDF in a short period of time and see how much you like it.

Thats what I was going to say, you can search for a particular word reference on a PDF you cant do that in a book :), PDF 1, Manual 0. :D

I like books but I dont like manuals, they used to make Manuals appear to be books so people would like thier manual. A proper manual is a mess of technical hogwash, as well as perhaps being useful for figuring something out.

But manuels aren't simply references. You're thinking of the civilopedia. Manuals have the instructions you need to know to play the game; they describe the mechancics; not only that, they integrate them, which simple references don't.

This.

But on the other hand, how would they sell the strategy guides to people if all pertinent information was already there! :mischief:

RailRoad Tycoon (1) was one of my first games and one of my favorite Manuals... I took it on vacation, when I couldn't play, to read!

I still remember the day I got Civ1 out of box...

A big manual that I read a dozen times from cover to cover.

The same thing happened with Civ2, Civ3, Civ4.

I'm really disappointed if civ5 comes without a proper printed manual. The Civ manual is a long tradition that is about to be broken. I wonder if Sid really likes this...:(

This is a shame... it's another reason IMO it seems to disuade buyers from purchasing from the store, and to purchase from Steam.

I have always liked the manual and everything that comes with the box. I realize much money is saved by not printing one though, so this is the obvious route they are taking, along with the other cost-saving things they have done.

Makes sense I suppose, although disappointing.
