Civ VII Weekly Reveal Guessing Thread

The only news today being a short video about Navigable Rivers makes me suspicious. Oddly timed news so far has been for clear reasons, and I'm not entirely convinced by "civ reveals two days in a row would be weird." It'll be a waste of a launch buildup to not try for some out-there calls, so I'm saying they're saving the Persia reveal for Thursday's First Look, which will be a Persian leader. Final guess, locked in.

Hehe, excellent. I'm not too suspicious of it: if two civ reveals were already planned, why not move the second one mid-week so it doesn't take away reaction hype from the first? On a larger scale, that's effectively what this weekly meting out of information is intended to do: keep players consistently engaged with and hyped for the game so they don't forget about it by launch.

So far, we have had a leader revealed roughly every week since the first civ-dump (Hatshepsut, Augustus, Confucius, Tecumseh, and Trung Trac). So I think going forward it wouldn't be wrong for gamblers in this thread to just habitually put forth a leader idea for that week. Juuuuust sayin'. ;)

If I'm wrong, it's no surprise. If I'm right, it's a great call. Nothing to lose!

You've got the hang of it! Obviously I think Persia stands good odds this week, otherwise I wouldn't have guessed it.

EDIT: Changed my vote to Norse in the OP. I've just got a feeling.

On the other hand, last week they said a leader, a civ and a dev diary, and we haven't had the civ, hence maybe the 2 this week.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Mississippi were supposed to be last week with Tecumseh, but moved to this week maybe because they already had two streams that week, or just to align with the Indigenous Peoples' Day.

I bet when they were initially mapping out weekly reveals, yes. But then the fact that a "N/M civ" was set to be revealed last week anyway, combined with the close confluence of Indiginous People's Day AND Tecumseh day, they just shifted the reveals a bit to be more thematically appropriate. I think it's all great.

something Germanic Goths/norse or maybe Japan/Korea

Persia matches for ‘Crossroads of the World’ DLC
Aside from the fact that we've already heard Persia name-dropped and seen some of their architecture, it would be really gross to have no Antiquity civs in West Asia, where civilization originated in the West.

But both Egypt and Aksum were also in the Arabian peninsula! ;)

Which is not Mesopotamia or the Levant. Neither is Persia, but it was at least in Mesopotamia's orbit.

Lol I know I'm jesting. I too think it would be extremely weird and dissatisfying not to get Persia (or something else, but Persia is really the far and away the "only" option other than maybe a Meso civ) at launch. I think we've seen enough to suggest it's in the base game, so I'm hoping it's just a matter of being patient and not desperate. :)

Civ6 did a very poor job with Ancient civs except for Phoenicia (Persia was well-designed, as well, but is definitely on the fuzzy boundary line of Classical) so I'm really hoping the Age system gives us some better-designed Ancient Near Eastern civs this time around.

I'm very optimistic. Between what looks like maybe upfront Babylon/Assyria in Crossroads (into more specific/appropriate successor states), and El Escorial pointing toward an eventual Phoenicia inclusion, I think it's going to look good. But I suspect launch Persia is going to be straight up blobby again like Egypt (maybe acceptable if we get Sasanid/Iran as well!).

In what way do you consider Egypt blobby?
Unless they mean they lumped together the Old, Middle and New Kingdom, I'm not sure? But I wouldn't really call that blobby to begin with. :dunno:

It's primarily (but not exclusively) New Kingdom anyway, but I agree I don't find treating different periods of Ancient Egypt together in a game with Civ7's scope particularly blobby.

New Kingdom leader, Old Kingdom wonder, yeah.
I don't even consider the wonder part of the civ design, personally, but I wouldn't have said no to the temple complex at Luxor or Karnak...Still, New Kingdom Egypt was very much a continuation of Old Kingdom Egypt culturally so I don't have a problem with it. In particular, Old and Middle Kingdom Egypt were very conservative and slow to change (in no small part due to Egypt's relative isolation). New Kingdom Egypt changed more rapidly as it came out of its isolation and began interacting more with other peoples.
