Civ4 patch 1.74 is released

Well this is great. I mean, thanks for the thought, but a big download to fix a handful of incredibly minor issues was hardly needed. And when the patch doesn't even work.. well i wish they hadn't thought at all.

I've downloaded the patch twice (when prompted as i try to play online). Each time, it closes Civ IV, starts the setupi process, then tells me "this setup has detected no version of Civ IV is installed on this machine". Brilliant.
The only thing i can think of is that i reformatted my boot drive recently. All my games have always been stored on a second drive, so nothing has happened to them - but god forbid it give me a chance to pick what drive the game is on, or bother to search past my first one...

So i guess i have to find my disk, reinstall the entire thing, redownload and reinstall the .61 patch, and redownload and install the new patch if i want to play with my friends. And all so people can't upgrade marines to mech infantry...

p.s. And from a quick browse, it seems that this has been a problem with previous patches for two years - they just never bothered to fix it.

Ive heard that the multiplayer community gets the option of downloading immideatly when they login so that everyone should have the same patch.

No, the multiplayer community is forced to download it, meaning that if you have a problem with the flawed patch you can't play online at all :/

It still says d3dx9_32.dll was not found. Maybe i saved it in the wrong place?

I had that problem.

Basically, I am still in the middle of GOTM20, so I didn't want to download patch 1.74. But I booted up Warlords and downloaded patch 2.13. However, when I closed down Warlords, it seemed to want to install 1.74 as well. I kinda panicked and hit cancel because I didn't want to go through the process of trying to get back to 1.61, but it seemed to install it anyway.

I have tried to uninstall Civ but I get an error message ("An error (-5006 : 0x80070003) has occurred while running the set up..." etc etc), and it won't let me uninstall it. I have successfully uninstalled Warlords (I thought that might help). But still Civ won't uninstall.

Then when I tried to load Civ instead, it said that I didn't have that .dll file. So I downloaded it from the internet and put it in the main Civ directory, and it started to load up properly, but now it says "Error loading shader libraries" when it gets close to having loaded up... and doesn't load.

Any ideas? I can't load it up and I can't uninstall it!

The biggest (and the only one that kinda matters) is the no marine upto machanical inf one....it always crack me up when I upgrade my once-a-warrior warlord to a bloodless machine :D

If this means that you wiped Windows and then reinstalled it, of course it's not going to find the game. The patcher likely searches the Windows registry to find the path to the game. A fresh install will have an empty registry.

I tried downloading and installing both versions of DX 9c. Both times after I hit 'next' on the EULA screen it takes me straight to the 'finished' screen and says "The components installed are ready for use." The game still doesn't work, any ideas???

BTW: I'm still getting the D3DX9_32.dll error. :(

Can you please post your DirectX diagnostic log here?

  1. Hit start then run
  2. Type dxdiag then hit enter.
  3. When it finishes loading, hit save all information to save the info as a text file. Post that file here.

I just spent the last 90 minutes chasing the D3DX9_32.dll error until I found this thread. Save yourself the frustration and don't bother with anything else except downloading the full directx_jun2007_redist.exe file from Microsoft and running the DXSetup.exe. The run time fixes are a waste of time. Nothing happens except time being killed.

Thanks to all who posted the links to this problem.

By the way, shouldn't someone at 2K games or Firaxis warn you before adding the patch that additional files will be required? (I'm just sayin'.)

If this means that you wiped Windows and then reinstalled it, of course it's not going to find the game. The patcher likely searches the Windows registry to find the path to the game. A fresh install will have an empty registry.

Because it makes a lot more sense to search for a registry value which has no effect on the game rather than actually searching for the game before telling me it doesn't exist? :/

It seems odd they didn't retrofit vanilla with all the AI improvements from Warlords and (supposedly) BTS ... at least it's not listed as a change ... that would help out the vanilla game immensely ...

That made the AI worse in my estimate. It made the game way to warmongerish compared to before the change.

Go to the main menu, and hit "advanced" then "check for updates".

Failing that, install Beyond The Sword.

I did the former yesterday, with dire results. I managed to reinstall the games (Vanilla and Warlords), and then installed the *older* patches manually, taking care to stay away from the recent ones. I'll do the latter (install BtS) when BtS finally goes on sale here in Sweden, which will be on Wednesday.
