Civ 4 underwent quite a few chops and changes to make it into China, and I can already see the censors making their lists and checking them twice for Civ5. First to go? The city state of Lhasa.

:sarcasm:

"Tibet is, and always has been, an inalienable part of China. Western game developers should mind their own business and stay out of China's internal affairs."

Or something like that.

LOL :D
I had a discussion with a chinese friend of mine a while ago (she's lived there her entire life, as chinese as they come), and the topic of country flags came up, and I said that Tibet's flag was quite rad, and she went all serious "Tibet isnt a country, its part of china"

Had a similar experience 2 years ago with a chinese student (a pretty girl btw) and Hong Kong. The macroeconomics teacher cited HK as an example : "Hong Kong is a good example of a country that is...". And the student stood up and cried out loud, all pissed : "HONG KONG IS NOT A COUNTRY !!!!"

(she was factually right, but it was a good laugh)

AT leat there are no Mongols this time and they don't need to replace Mao.

Are you sane ! For a long time Tibet wasn't a part of China. It was an independent country and was annexed by China a few decades ago ! Are you trying to deny the existence of this people itself ? That is revisionism. In the game, China will still be able to invade Lhasa and make it a part of their empire. This is no different than what happened in history.

@ snipperrabbit!!

I think Culture Maniac realizes that Tibet has serious claims to independence, but was remarking that Chinese censors won't see it that way, that they'll see a simple game as a western attack on Chinese internal affairs. The OP even went so far as to put up a sarcasm alert so I doubt he's concurring with the Communist Party Line.

*whoosh*

Of course, but that's irrelevant. It's not what they say it happened.

Totally unrelated to the game...

...but I find it amusing that many Westerners support the exiled leader of a former totalitarian state (yes it was) with a long history of religious theocracy and serfdom. Not saying Chinese communism is a step up, but still, just because the Dalai Lama smiles a lot and writes books about inner peace that you can buy at Barnes & Noble doesn't make him a saint.

As some posters may or may not know, Hearts of Iron III is banned in China because it depicts multiple independent Chinese factions, including Nat China, Com China, Tibet and others. The Chinese Communist Parties position is that China has always been a unified nation.

Rather than edit the game to provide the unified China Chinese censors demanded Paradox simply accepted the ban. (I think in Europe they actually marketed the game with a "Banned in China" ad.)

Tibet's a sore subject of a lot people. I don't know that much, but I think that Lhasa's cultural importance and longtime autonomous nature make it a fit candidate for a city-state regardless of the current and past status of Tibet itself.

Doesnt make him a saint, but there're also no atrocities known that would make him a fiend.
On the other side there is China with their arguable interpretation of human rights, and their fabricated claims to whichever asian country their interested in.

Considering that, I think it's neither surprising or amusing that the Dalai Lama, as symbol for a free Tibet is supported by so many Westerners.

I bet Taiwan will also be included as a city state, and this might be first.

Oh my. You could end up in prison in China if you claim that Taiwan is an independent country. Lonely Planet books are confiscated because of this.

Hey, as someone with relatives from the island, I can assure you Taiwan shouldn't be in there as a city-state.

It's a country

:D

Well, City States are considered Civilizations in the game so no problem. ;)

Taipei as a city state, perhaps. But certainly not Taiwan. My impression is that it's cities that make up city states, no?

Exactly.. Hong Kong could be a city state however ;)
GOD its so much fun to antagonize China and their territorial claims! :)

I still love China though, their thousands of years of culture and art overshines the mess some of their leaders have caused.
I mean, speaking of China in terms of the land area, since it wasnt all "China" until relatively recently.
The culture and art that their inhabitants have formed over the centuries captured my heart, regardless of their handful of leaders actions.

You still gotta wonder though, what our western countries would do if something similar, but reverse, happened.
If Civ5 was released with USA as a puppet-state of Great Britain, or with Berlin as a city state within a Polish Empire.
Then again, the USA and Germany are already pretty happy with censoring "improper" stuff ;)
