CivCon 09 Cancelled

Gamescon 2009 is in Germany, Cologne (Koln)
It was before hosted by Leipzig.

RedRalphWiggum, I am unsure about the date though as it seems to be a 1 day event only rather than a 3 days event...
According to the original documentation found on the Gamescon web site
http://www.biu-online.de/home/news/...-sich-allen-facetten-der-computerspielkultur/
There, you will find a link to a pdf (in german...):
http://www.gamescom.de/global/dokumente/gamescom/de/Programm_gamescom_congress.pdf

It says:
Datum (date): 20.08.2009, 10:00 Uhr bis 18:00 Uhr
Ort (place): Kölnmesse, Congress-Centrum Nord, Großer Rheinsaal

Or, perhaps, there is a less informal convention for the dates you give, associated to this Gamescon Congress, with more entertaining events... I could not find more information and I am not good at reading german.
However, it seems also to be a very formal meeting: when you look at the schedule for the day, Electronic Arts is in pool position, and then you have several speakers (all Dr. or Prof.) from various universities/Institutions...
In short, it does not look at all a good place for doing marketing announcements...
(hum... should I say it looks a pretty boring mind-masturbating meeting?)

Paradox Interactive are definitely announcing games at it

I tried to track down Firaxis announcements of the past few games,
and I am not sure, but it seems that no specific event is needed for them
to make announcements... it could be just any time, any day...

edit:
May fiscal year have effect on announcement?
End of year, quarter or sg. (when is that?)?

TBH, I wonder if there isn't something wrong at Firaxis. For a while, there seemed to be some life at the company again (couple of Q&As, interview with Sid), but they've gone completely silent again. Makes me wonder if they are in financial trouble or something, its high time we had an announcement of a new game, its long overdue.

Any plans for some news anytime soon, maybe at Gamescon, Jon? Been a while... was good to have the Q&As again

'Fraid I don't know all of what marketing has planned. And if I shared what I knew then they'd be knocking on my door pretty quick. ;) Sorry.

Jon

My bet is on whichever year my computer becomes obsolete.

PS: The secrecy surrounding most gaming companies still puzzles me. Grating. At this point it seems even "Hi we're working on a game" has become secret information (note I said "a" game).

I get why Blizzard, and other companies, needs the secrecy - they have actual competition. Firaxis has zero competition with the Civilization franchise. Would be nice though, if they had... might get something a bit more innovative next time then.

I thought so! Hi Trip!

Regardless of the product or industry there are good reasons not to tell everyone about what you're doing as soon as you can. See Spore for a good example. It's the job of those in marketing to plan this stuff out and ensure products are as successful as possible, and sometimes keeping secrets for a while is required. ;)

Jon

I live in a country where in the past (only?) it was a routine to read inbetween the lines,
so I guess I thank you now ;)

Thank you Jon.
For your answers here, and for the really good job you did (do) with "our" games" !

We appreciate that Jon, and we appreciate you posting here to tell us, but its has at this stage been a very long time. I know every company works differently, but can you tell us at any stage in the future, would Firaxis consider using development diaries?

They used developer's diaries for the Conquests (scenarios) in C3C, so I doubt it's out of the question. You have to be pretty far along in game development, though, to publish some type of a journal/diary.
