We are hosted on the Tellefragged server. May they have the traffic at these times and not us.

With PTW coming out in the not too distant future we can expect more visitors, they aren't likely to stay and have a look around if the "too many connections" and "server busy" messages come up often. Nor if it is just god-damned slow.

Banning Darkshade is a good idea, don't think it will help the speed of the server though :p

Why Darkshade? Meaning Simon Darkshade? He has too many posts or something like that?

I don't really notice the speed too much, unless it's really going slow. But I skip Apotyln a lot because of it's tiring design. It's not as clean and snappy as CFC and that's why I like to stick around here.

I voted CFC as going faster because I manage to usually skip the forum burnouts for some reason - maybe because I'm skipping the forum-crash times?

I have an idea for trying to prevent server burnouts: post a coursty code thingy. Like one would be trying not to get on to the forums during the burnout times. Or something would be doing only the essintials on this board, like reply to suscribed topics.

Bad idea maybe - :(

The forum server has been more stable for the past few days.

Last night I managed to send like 16,000 emails to forum members about the PTW gold news. :)

Maybe we could get rid of some of the archive's and possibly some really old threads in all of the current forums.

It might lower some people's post count down, but I think that will be much better than not being able to look at your postcount ;).

Blah. You didn't post there. You don't know the history in those old archives. We could just get rid of Civ3 general discussion all together. That would speed things up considerably. :p

Actually the Civ3 Demogame is where most of my post count is located.... and that's archivied.... So I would lose alot of posts if we got rid of that.

You know, if we had a dedicated server for around 100$ a month, we could also sell the advertising of our choice and perhaps take out a nice chunk of that cost..now if TF would just sacrifice his DSL connection and use FreeI, he wouldn't have to pay an extra ;) :D

Then let's get rid of that too.

Actually, a while ago I started going up to gen. discussion to pad my post count by answering new member's questions. Especially such favorites as "how do you make an army" and "why can't I make an army?" Those were my favorites. :)

Then Killer came along with his infernal FAQ and newbie question thread! I was sunk. No more thread about how to start an army or anything. :mischief: No impressionable minds to mess with! :p

16,000? :( There's over 20,000 members. I gues I wasn't one of the 16,000 that got the news. But I found out anyway looking around on GD.

Site speed has been pretty OK the last couple of days. Miss some search functions though. TF, is it search all vs. search none or are choices possible?

Yeah, it's much more up to speed now. :) I wonder if VBulliten keeps track of the most used features.

What about the avatars which have been uploaded but aren't used anymore?

I've uploaded almost 20 custom avatars, switching them constatly.

I say we disallow custom avatars, switch back to a single style, delete all 0 posts members and delete that spammy Civ3 forum! :yeah: :p

Actually that might really help and Poly, as hard as it is to say, really is faster.

Things like that are the usual delays:
Page generated in 5.3236860 seconds (98.94% PHP - 1.06% MySQL) with 31 queries.

Page generated in 18.6243160 seconds (2.01% PHP - 97.99% MySQL) with 25 queries.

And those loading times are only the HTML code, no avatars, pictures or other such things are included in those times.

As said, that is standard CFC delay nowadays, but by far not the max. My "best" was this here:

Page generated in 187.7233590 seconds (1.86% PHP - 98.14% MySQL) with 24 queries.

OVER 3 f***ing MINUTES!!!
IIRC the main page was around 120 seconds and fora 130 secs. And it went like this for at least 2 hours that day!
Not to mention that 7/10 request got "server busy" messages and 2/10 no answer at all.

Now that surely is slower than even Poly.
:D

If we disallowed custom avatars there'd be an outcry, especially since TF only gave in after a lot of requests. But I think that it'd be a good idea to limit people to only one custom avatar.
