CivG2SG - The Second Emperor Try (C3C)

Here's my first try at dotmapping. I don't know if it's similar to the one Chieftess made or not. It's not as dense a build as I usually do, but a lot of people don't seem to like reallly dense builds. I'd like some input before I play.

CGdotmap12.JPG

I think we should go for the pink dot because that would get us the second ivory and then the orange dot so we could get the silks.

I can certanly add you in the rouster Stuck :)

Just to add, Eric's dotmap is pretty close to my layout (if not tile per tile). If I can get the upload to work, you'll see.

Eric,

I prefer a denser build, especially in Emperor games.

I also like to build out towards my nearest neighbor if a critical res or lux is available. Develop the backlines at my leisure.

lurker's comment:

Too bad you guys didn't pick an agricultural civ...with 2 sites with +2 food bonuses you could have gotten up a 4 turn settler factory at either site and it would have really helped with all the desert in the south. Btw, what are you guys gonna do about an FP with the corruption problem in C3C?

Preturn - Looks good. I would have built a warrior or barracks in G-city instead of a scout, but maybe a scout's a better choice. I also probably would have chopped the forest and built
a barracks before the settler that's being built. Would that be a bad idea? I'm not criticizing, just exposing my ignorance so I can learn. Anyway, I make no changes and hit enter.

2510BC (1) Explore.

IBT - Apologize for the scout being in German territory.

2470BC (2) Rodriguez spots a goody hut, pops it, and gets Masonry. Also another horse resource
here. G-city can borrow Lisbon's cow tile with Lisbon still growing and producing settler next turn. And if I move Lisbon's citizen to the grassland next to the river instead of the BG they can pick up an extra commerce.

We're at tech parity with Elizabeth, up Masonry and Alphabet on Bismarck. Move science down to 70%, writing due in two. Sell Masonry to Bismarck for 74 gold.

IBT - Lisbon settler > warrior.

2430BC (3) Put Lisbon citizen back on cow. Ahh, I thought those borders looked too dark to be England. Pedro meets the Russians. She has 3 cities in addition to her capitol. We are up
The Wheel. Sell her The Wheel for 68 gold, all she has. I wonder if I sell techs too cheaply. I think the deal with Germany made sense because we were down to about 10 gold.

Regular warrior from Lisbon and settler moving toward wheat spot. Change production in far-flung Oporto from worker to warrior, to keep barbs from nailing it and also to keep from tempting Germany too much.

IBT - Tell Catherine we'll move the scout. Get Writing, start Philosophy.

2390BC (4) Bump science to 80%, Philososphy due in 20. Explore. Change production in G-town
from scout to warrior, our continent is most of the way explored now.

IBT - G-town warrior > worker.

2350BC (5) Actually, the area where Russia and England are may be quite large. Haven't seen any English towns yet. Curraugh is almost there.

Bismarck has Horseback Riding, we are still up Alphabet. Catherine is up Iron Working. We're up Writing on Liz. Catherine won't give IW for Writing. Give Bismarck Alphabet and 53
gold for HB. Ugggh, now Catherine will take writing for IW, I could have sworn she wouldn't take it before the German trade. I take it, I want to see if we have any iron around.

Closest source of iron is 2 tiles west of the wheat. I'll try to claim it. G-town borrows Lisbon's cow for one turn.

IBT - Ivory is connected to Lisbon. Lisbon warrior > settler.

2310BC (6) Shuffle tiles between cities so Lisbon grows sooner. Lux to 10%. Science to 90%,
Philosophy due in 14. German archer near Oporto. No civs have any techs we don't.

IBT - German archer moves away.

2270BC (7) Explore. Hey Lisbon's citizens are no longer unhappy about the whipping. Lux. to 0%. Science at 100%.

IBT - Oporto warrior > worker.

2230BC (8) Barb camp near where the settler/warrior team are heading. 3 Barbs are in it.
I hope they act weird and stay fortified. Bump lux. to 10%. Keep Lisbon citizens working grass instead of forest.

IBT - G -town worker > barracks.

2150BC (9) Guess we got some kinda Pangea map, curraugh is discovering a long line of coast.
A barb is unfortified, settler/warrior team is on a mountain. An unescorted German settler is trying to beat us to the iron.

IBT - Gawd!! Warrior survives 3 barb attacks. German settler moves away. Lisbon settler > warrior.

2110BC (10) Lux. back to 0. Catherine now has Mysticism. We're up HB on her and even more with the others.

I really thought things were going to get ugly with the barbs but I got lucky. Sorry about the near-disaster. I was planning
on settling on the spot the settler is, unless someone has a better idea.

Oh, G-town can borrow the cow again for one turn without slowing down the capitol. I really feel bad about almost getting the settler killed, should I have turned back?

I just hope that Russia won't research Philosophy before us now that we've traded it to them.

If we do get philo, we could go for Mathematics (SoZ), or Literature (TGL).

I think we should go for TGL and if we fail to get it we can switch in the SoZ.

Got it.

Will play late afternoon(Thursday, December 4).

Looking forward to commentary, quips or ideas.

Despite being new to Emperor, Is it wise to head for Literacy to get The Great Library?

If you pre-build, or get literature quite early, and have a good enough city with enough production it's not hard to build it on emperor.

First step:
Take a tour around the map and appreciate the great start
As soon as Oporto produces worker and drops to pop1 will convert civilian to scientist and hopefully get a research boost from an otherwise useless village and start scout. Once Guimares grows will switch from barracks to worker to speed improvements.

Plan:
1) Improve land area to max productivity
2) Produce settlers, warriors and curraghs in Lisbon
3) Produce Workers in Guimares
4) Produce scouts and research in Oporto.
5) Reserch priority will be towards Math for SoZ as we have two tough and aggressive neighbors in mil Germany and exp Russia and exp Liz will come looking soon. Barbs could get to be problem soon as well. HeavCav at Ospt will serve us well.
6) Explore, explore, explore. Knowledge is power!!
7) Maximise research spending. Knowledge is gold too
8) Trade, trade, trade

T0
Trade writing to Otto for 53g

T1
2070AD
Scouts amd ColEx explore. Found Lagos, start worker. Settler/war pair move west from Lisbon. set lux to 10% as unhappy citizen appears in Lisbon. Treasury at 145g -1gpt. State dept reports all civs are cautious towards us.

IBT Ger ar/set pair retreat W from Lagos. Lis war->worker in 3 growth in 3. Workers mine

T2 2030
Explore and mine. Dispatch war at Lis to Lagos to take out barb camp and garrison Lagos.

IBT Jute war busts out heading for Lagos:eek: .

T3
1990BC
Nothing new

IBT Worker->war at Lis. Jute war attacks Lagos, dies.

T4
1950BC
Found Emerita start worker

IBT Barb app Sanchez Russian appear on S coast of continent English appear next to Pedro in W

T5
1910BC
Pedro moves to cover behind Rus war fort on hill Nothing else sig

IBT Lisbon War->worker. Mines finished at Lisbon and G-town.

T6
1870BC
War at Lisbon makes citizens content, set lux at 0, 140g 0gpt Phi due in 1. Scouts exp. Workers road mined tiles. Dispatch war at Emerita towards barb camp.
State Dept: Liz cautious still. We're up three techs (IW,W,HBR) but she only has 1g.
Cautious Cathy has Myst, still lacks HBR but has no cash.
Otto now has IW so we are at parity but he never had any dinero to trade for IW anyway
HEW: Everybody content or better
Treasury: 140g 0gpt

IBT Phil->Math due in 15. Trade Cathy Phil for Myst and 25g. Oporto worker->scout

T7
1830BC
Hire scientist at Oporto. Somehow we learn Math immediately after trade so start on Lit due in 15 at 80% and 0gpt. At that price somebody in the fog already has Lit. Check f11, and we're 1 in literacy. Lisbon grows so set lux @10% and start SoZ (Due in 24. Next player can veto if appropriate.)

Results of f11:
Top 5: Lisbon pop4, Ur pop2, Babylon pop2, London pop1,
Berlin pop1
Portugal is #1 in most categories: Population, GNP, Mfg goods, Literacy, Disease, Pollution, Life Exp, Productivity. #2 in Family size, #4 in income and area, #7 in MilServ.

Status Screen: 2% of area, 19% of pop
Russia is next at 2% and 14% respectively. We are #2 behind Russia in overall score but behind England in culture 76 to 88

We are 5 techs up on England (IW, Writing, Myst, Math, HBR; 2 tech up on Russia (Math, HBR); 3 techs up on Germany (Myst, Math, Phil)

IBT Liz is unhappy at ColEx. We agree to move

T8
1790BC
Continued exploration. Attack barb camp at Lagos and collect another 25g

IBT 4 Khazak warriors bust out of mtns W of G-town:(

Roads finished so gpt goes up 1

T9
1750BC Shift workers away from Khazak warriors at G-town

IBT Khazak horde fortifies on hill west of G-town:confused:

T10
1725BC Dispatch war at Lisbon towards G-town. Increase lux to avoid riots in Lis 192g -1gpt

State Dept:
Liz is cautious. Has only three cities, 1g in treasury, picked up 2 techs in three turns, IW & Math, still down Writing, Myst and Phil.

Cathy is cautious, also picked up 2 techs, and is now at parity with 1g in treasury and 6 cities

Otto is annoyed, picked up 1 tech (Math), is down Myst and Phil, has 2g in treasury. Spend 29g to open embassy in Berlin. Pop1, 1sp in garrison, 80% sci, 0% lux, has no resources or lux hooked up, building spear, grows in 5, no city improvements, culture 2pt, cultural expansion in 9. Opening embassy improves Otto's attitude to cautious.

State of Civ Report:
Berlin-SoZ due in 19, growth in 1
G-town-Barracks due in 4, growth in 4
Oporto building scout, scientist researching
Lagos buiding worker due in 1, growth in 1.
Emerita building worker due in 4, growth in 1

Treasury 169g, -1gpt
Science@80%, entertainment@20%
Literature due in 12
Scouts exploring fog in south and ColEx cruising coastlines, venturing out to sea once in a while just to see what we can see, no suicide missions, though

Overall a pretty good position. No neighbors annoyed enough to sneak attack us, though I want to keep a close eye on Otto and Cathy. Liz is too far away to be much of a threat, though she could be the instigator of a cat fight, as she apparently has no good land to work. Perhaps a little over-committed to worker building at the expense of settlers, although we have the major resources in sight covered and can build out our back door conveniently now that the approaches are secured. Once G-town finishes barracks might want to start war/settler/war/worker cycle. If we keep the Treasury where it is or better will have enough gold to upgrade warriors to swords once iron comes on line.

I hope this meets with your approval.

Humbly submitted

England is not expansionists in Conquests, they are commercial and seafaring.

Somehow we learn Math immediately after trade so start on Lit due in 15 at 80% and 0gpt. At that price somebody in the fog already has Lit.
We learned math because the first civ to discover Philosophy in C3C gets a free tech.
And the price is dependendant on how many civs that have the tech amongst the civs you know. It doesn't get lower because some civ has the tech that you don't know of.

Berlin-SoZ due in 19, growth in 1
I guess you mean Lisbon? ;)

lurker's comment: Hey guys.

I thought I could do a few modifications to the dot map after the map that was posted by eric.....
