Civilization 5 Rants Thread

I believe it is now the 4 year anniversary (+5 days) of the unmitigated debacle that was Civilization 5. Happy Birthday! :p

Has it stood the Test of Time? Sadly, it has not. It is a half baked crumby cake.

It does truly take the cake in this fashion, however:

Still playing Civ IV. Rock on guys! Can't believe it's been 4 years since that initial disappointment of shelling 50 bucks for a worthless plastic disc.

You curmudgeonly old farts need to get with the times, Civ V is great :)
 
I'd recommend these mods:
New Civs: [BNW] Australia Civilization - Colonialist Legacies, The Kingdom of Norway, The Sioux (Brave New World), [BNW] Vietnam Civilization - Colonialist Legacies, Sumer (BNW or GK), The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (Lenin), The Goths (BNW or GK)

Units - Scout to Explorer - Allows you to upgrade your Scouts to Explorers later on, making them slightly more useful late game.
Religion - No AI Free Pottery - Takes free pottery away from the AI, evening the playing field a bit.
Religion - Beliefs Expansion Pack - Introduces many new follower and pantheon beliefs. Really recommend this one.
Barbarians Unlimited Exp - Removes the exp cap from attacking barbarians. Just a personal preference.
Gibraltar, Reef and Krakatoa fixes - Fixes the placement of these natural wonders. Krakatoa will no longer be unworkable 90% of the time.
Quick turns - Speeds up the AI's turns.
More Luxuries - Adds some more luxuries to the game, and improves luxury placement.
Less Warmonger Hate - AI will no longer hate you in the atomic age for a war you started in the medieval era.
Info Addict - Good mod that allows you to see more information at a glance.
Mercenary Army Expanded - Adds 2 more units to the mercenary army policy under commerce, such as the Swiss Guard which come with later techs.
Smart AI - Improves the AI in various ways, such as being able to move and fire in the same turn with archery units.
 
I think that's my top complaint about Civ 5 is the mods just aren't as epic as what we saw with Civ 4, also I still can't believe how bland the textures look in 5 compared to the textures found in many Civ 4 mods.

Precisely this. Civ IV, with all expansion packs, might be worse than Civ 5, with all expansion packs, but the best mods of Civ V do not even hold a candle to the best mods of Civ IV.
 
Civilization 5 being the most moddable Civ ever? Pffffttt...:crazyeye:

Perhaps they'll go to 64 bit for Civ VI and then modders will be able to do some amazing things. :)

As it is for now, us curmudgeonly old farts will enjoy a quality gaming experience. (aka not Civilization 5) :)

The only way Civilization 5 would be great is if it were to be the late great Civilization 5. As in, dead, buried and forgotten forever. ;)

It's not a question of being old fashioned but a question of wanting a quality game. If this is what the times are like, then I truly shudder for gamers of the future. :sad:
 
LOL at people randomly complaining about a game they don't play four years after the fact. There comes a time when you really should just move on...

Agree completely. As fans of Civilization it is but natural for us to feel deeply about the subject. Why should we forget and move on? I have been playing Civilization since I was 11 years old(1992) both on PC and Amiga. We won't forget 2K, and I think for the majority of us we won't forgive either. Not until they produce a true sequel to IV that really can stand the test of time. IV certainly stood the test of time, and still does which is amazing really. And before someone begins with the worn argument "vanilla Civ IV and vanilla BTS was also not very good, worse than Civ V+expansions", let me say that it is Civ IV's modability that makes it shine so much (Civ V's moddability gets nowhere near it). That and of course the enormously dedicated community behind it.

It's not random at all. I've been quite consistent in "denouncing" this game. A lot more consistent than the denouncing in Civilization 5. Lol

Well spoken sir. We are still on here 4 years later because we care. If we didn't care about this franchise or didn't yearn for a quality game we wouldn't be here.

I remember how in leading up to cIV, there was a thread on Apolyton that reached 168 pages and was dedicated to fan suggestions for cIV. The designers really listened and understood the pulse of the fans. They took it to heart and created a Civ game that truly has stood the test of time.

May they do it again for Civ VI!

Here's to a Civ VI that is worthy of being a sequel to cIV. :beer:

Indeed. I also have been playing Civ since Civ I. I even bought two copies of it because I loved it so much. :D
 
Yes, this is the designated "rants" thread, so those who want to make posts that are critical of CiV are encouraged to post those sentiments here. As for improvements to the franchise, no one should assume that ideas and suggestions for the next iteration of the Civ franchise that appear in this thread will get noticed by Firaxis (although they may). We understand that Firaxis does regularly monitor the Ideas & Suggestions subforum, in addition to GD, S&T, etc. generally.
 
I wasn't a fan of Civ V on launch, I went back to Civ IV for quite a long while, then I played a little bit of G&K, then played the demo for BNW and didn't buy it. It was quite a long time later when I started playing again and really got into it that I truly became addicted to Civ V and bought BNW. This game was borderline trash on release, now it's flourished and is one of my favourite games.
