Civilization: Dawn of Man

Looks like filli is mightily popular. Gee, I wonder why.

I will now defend myself (not an official action) with the mighty power of counter-speech!

Tribespeople, I speak to you now with regards to Tarik Isthvia, my fellow candidate. He says that our real problem is the filthy mongrels that pillage our lands. Them my friends, are no worry. Those cowards have no honor or dignity as they refuse to face us on the field of battle. The gods will soon destroy the filthy mongrels as they believe in dignity and honor, not cowardice or hiding. However, the gods will not provide our harvests or homes, we must earn this ourselves as this shows the gods if we are strong or weak. This is why we must increase our harvests and build godly houses, it will provide us with favor of the gods. Now do you want to support me and please the gods, or support Tarik Isthvia and waste time on defeating silly, filthy, uncivilized mongrels?

I can not believe what I am hearing! Our people know how to please the gods, our bounteous harvests since time immemorial are proof of that. But when it comes to defence the gods will help those who help themselves. They will lend strength to our arms but they have never just struck down interlopers.

I notice that despite your, frankly ridiculous, implied claim that only you can please the gods you still fail to address the issue of wise dispensation of justice, when wisdom is the greatest of the gods gifts to our people. Understandable really as you have yet to show any wisdom, not even when the gods send a clear sign by inspiring our people to stand against your challenge.

It will all be proven upon the field of battle as you have two to your team and I have one, myself. If the gods are to agree with you, you shall win the challenge. If the gods agree with me then I shall win the challenge. Let us settle this on the field of battle!

There is perhaps nothing more despicable than civil war, where brothers kill brothers and where we exhaust and destroy ourselves. Instead of using our energy against our real enemies, we use it to kill our own people. We make ourselves weaker and allow our enemies, our real enemies, to take advantage of our infighting and to reign supreme.

We all belong to the same nation, why do we need to fight? Why can we not talk over this? Let us decide who is going to be Chief through elections. Each one of us will say which candidate we support and the one with the most support shall become Chief. It is fair, because the one with the most support will also be the one most respected by our nation - for if he was not respected, how could he have been elected? - and because everyone would be willing to die for our Chief since he was chosen by us. If we follow your method, PortugalPower, then the one who becomes Chief may not be someone who is respected and thus no one would be willing to die for him.

It is quite clear to me that in order to satisfy your lust for power, you are ready to cause a civil war that will destroy our nation, weaken us and impose a tyrannical rule that will not be respected by anyone, thus seeding the roots for future instability and civil wars. You rely on brute strength alone and disregard the fact that no one in the tribe has voiced his support for you, thus showing that you are not being respected by anyone. And a leader who is not respected by his people, cannot lead his nation to glory and cannot conquer the respect of other peoples.

You think and speak of the Gods, but you forget that the ones who want to rule are not the Gods but the people. So you need not the support of Gods - not only, at least - but you need to have the support of the people. And you do not have that support. Thus, you need to step down or you shall destroy our tribe. For even if you win, I will not accept a tyrannical rule like yours and I will defend with my life the will of the people.

May the Gods see your injustice and punish you!

OOC: ... No. No, we will not have democracy 4000 BC, for heaven's sake. Democracy as we know it today didn't exist until the 19th century, simply because it was not a viable type of government prior to that.

OOC: Tribal kind of democracy did exist. The tribe's elders were choosing the tribe's Chief and that is what I am talking about, not modern democracy.

OOC: Tribe elders means that it's more like an oligarchy, I'd say.

OOC: I never said in my speech that I want a democracy. And by people, I was referring to the players not all of the people.

OOC: Yeah I can't remember the exact name but I read a paper that talked about early native american tribal democracy it was for sure a thing :P

OOC: I think it'd be essentially an oligarchical republic - leaders chosen by a select few from amongst a select few.
IC: Anyway, I'll continue my support for PortugalPower (or whatever his in-game name is) but I'm not going to physically defend him in this fight - we shouldn't resort to violence like barbarians to settle our problems!

Our strength if something given at birth, and thus a divine blessing given to each and every one of us. If somebody is defeated in physical combat, it is thus the will of God.

As Raz Piye:

Please brothers we are the ones our people depend on to carry our village forward. We need ALL of us to move into the future. Lets not beset our people with this violence. I feel we can find a way that works for all of us.

Fahim Amirmoez (Magnive), your parable reminded me of a parable that was passed down to me. And I believe this is a story which will help guide our future.

My first Action: Founding Story

Spoiler :
All I could think about was the heat pressing against my body like I was the Gods' next meal. The sand grains were like a million pieces of fire torching my already calloused bare feet.
"Why are you smiling?" My very young nephew asked with a quizzical expression on his face.
"Because we're home young one." I replied as I finished digging a pit for a fire for the night.
"Your father is collecting water at the oasis so how about a story before we finish our work? I'll tell you all about the sands and why it's so important that you came with us."
He smiled excitedly and sat by the newly formed pit with his legs crossed.
"Start!"

In a time long before us, our people lived without our village. We were born in these sands. Just as the snakes rise out of the sands in the morning, we rose from nowhere like a fire from the ground. The Gods blew life into us the same way me and your father blow into a fire. We rose ever higher into the sky. Like fire, we are vital to life in the deserts. However, just like fire, we can burn all that we touch. That's why we must always be gentle to the land we were blessed with. It's also why we must always be wary of those we don't know. We must always avoid being burned by the fire. We were people who traveled with our clan constantly moving from oasis to oasis to trade and share food with other clans. We bathed what we could hunt in the fires to bless our food. We slept by the fires in those cold desert nights to keep our selves warm. The smoke coming from the fire could guide you towards other clans, who would give water and trade goods.

But again the fire can burn us as well. One day a young man name Marrak woke to the sounds of terrible screams. He woke to find his clan being attacked by vicious barbarians who had came to steal our women and food and water. He woke his young wife and they ran away from the barbarians, into unknown lands. The barbarians never gave chase because they figured they would die alone in the desert. For days, Marrak and his wife survived on snakes, scorpions and spiders. He prayed over the fires looking for answers. Finally, after 10 days and 10 nights, he found an oasis like none seen before. It had more food, water and animals then they could possibly consume.
Marrak knew this place had never been found before because no one had ever traveled this far into the desert. Content with their new wealth. Marrak and his wife stopped walking the desert. They grew fat in the oasis. They didn't have to hunt because they had fish. They no longer prayed in the fire because they needed nothing from him. But they wanted to start a family. Marrak's wife could never receive a child. Marrak feared they had been cursed. So for the first time in many moons and suns he prayed in the fire.

When he fell asleep he saw a vision. He saw the God of Fire command him to leave and walk the desert for 10 days and 10 nights again to prove his dedication to the Fire God. He could carry nothing but wood and brush to start daily fires. In the morning, he prayed and struck out on his journey, leaving his wife behind for her safety. Naked, alone, and traveling for days, he could do nothing but search for snakes and bugs, and pray into the fire for survival. He knew not where he was going and lost his way. On the 9th night, he had no more wood for fire. Afraid he would die without his god, he didn't stop walking. Finally, on the 11th morning, he saw smoke. He followed it all morning until finally he came upon the fire and saw the silhouette of a slim beautiful woman lying next to it. He thought he was seeing spirits but he continued walking. When he came upon the fire, the woman woke and started weeping. He realized he had found his wife. His wife was weeping because she saw he had lost all his fat in the desert and was growing a beard. He didn't recognize her but she had lost her fat by fasting and praying by the fire for the 10 days he was lost.

They loved each other and in the morning she knew she had received a child. From that day on Marrak knew his clan would stay there forever. But when a young boy plans to marry his bride, he must travel into the desert naked with only enough wood for 9 fires. He must travel for at least 10 days and find his way back home. This will prove to the God of Fire that he is worthy of a family and that he appreciates the desert and fire man was given. The future bride must fast and pray for 10 days to prove her worth. When the boy comes back, he returns a man. When the couple marries, the girl becomes a woman and they become worthy of children.

“So you see young nephew. One day you will travel out here all alone and learn the power of our fire, just as me and your father before you. Only then will you appreciate our great village, our great desert and the great power of our fire. And now you know why we trade with friendly clans but remain wary of barbarians. We depend on the deserts and the fire to protect us.”

  • To summarize, if you don't want to read that much: We were born by the Gods like fire.
  • We appreciate the deserts they gave us and the power of the fire they gave us.
  • We used to be a people that walked the desert trading with other clans.
  • Marrak, our villages founder, was attacked by barbarians and he and his wife traveled the desert for 10 days and 10 nights. And they found the body of water we live in.
  • To conceive a child Marrak walked the desert 10 days and 10 nights.
  • We get our faith by the desert. We defend ourselves from barbarians in the desert and we travel to trade with other clans and friends.

Tarik Ishtvia (fili). It sounds like you agree with the principles of the God of Fire, and the parable I just told. If you profess your loyalty to our founding father Marrak and agree to carry on the ancient customs of our dedication to the desert, trade, and the God of Fire, then I will throw in my support for you.
Because you agree that in my parable, the barbarians are vicious and forever deserve retribution for there violence and you agree with my parable, in that the body of water we live near has endless amounts of food and beasts for harvest. Profess your love for the God of Fire and I follow you!

I would just like to say that this forum is awesome. Look at what has already happened. We've split into two political camps (fill_noctus and I). We already have a decision to which way our politics will lead. We have stories supporting a political camp. So this IAAR has already developed a life of its own. I have just joined Civ Fanatics and I am so happy with what I have already seen. Best luck to fill_noctus. Now back your regularly scheduled programming: fighting each other like barbarians and causing a civil war!

Make a Speech:

I look around and I see 2 brooding factions. 2 peoples, each intent to put their leader in power. Are we no better than the barbarians? For what distinctions, as small or as large as they may be, are even present? I see two groups who are willing to fight, to kill another human being, another member who contributes to our society, to end a life, just in the struggle for power. In the pursuit for authority have we lost our way?
What makes us better than those barbarians in their petty tribes, who wander the countryside to pillage and murder all those they see? Here we were supposed to be different. Here we were supposed to be safe. Safe from hunger, from barbarians, from the beasts, and safe from each other. So how dare you people threaten one another, we are men, we are not beasts, we have a God who has chosen us to progress, chosen us to build, chosen us to live, and how dare any defy God, defy our legacy.
And so, I renounce my promise of defense, and I hope others shall follow in my lead, and this whole conflict will subside with no blood spilled, and no men murdered.

It should be noted, everyone, that the one who made this political conflict an armed one was not Tarik Ishtvia but rather PortugalPower.

No one regrets this escalation more than I, but our customs prevent me from refusing this challenge. To do so would abandon our people to the rash leadership of PortugalPower. That I cannot do no matter the potential cost to myself.

I have offered him the chance to withdraw his challenge and prove his right to lead through wisdom, but he has refused. Should any man wish to show the same courage as Linghu Chong to stand against him I will not stop them, but I do not ask it of anyone. The challenge is, after all, against me and I ask that no man hold against Mathias Iraxi the withdrawal of his pledge, for I myself do not.

In a dream, the gods have visited me and told me the error of my ways. In the dream a holy ascended that looked in a way that I cannot describe told me to stop the futile challenge as the gods will support fill_noctus because of my rash futile ways. They then said that because of my misinterpreting of the gods they have been angered, normally they would let events play out and would not interfere but they have made an exception. They have only warned me because it is fair as normally they would not have made filli_noctus's victory certain. They finally said that I would be killed in the challenge of strength and the only choice that I have is to stop the challenge if I were to have a complete turnaround in my philosophy then I may still lead the people of (insert name here). I would like to immediately back out of the challenge I have submitted to fill_noctus if his offer is still standing. Otherwise I will take my punishment for angering the gods like a man.

I hope I played the "complete turnaround card because holy revelation" card well. If I withdraw my challenge then do I still have an action to use? If not then that makes sense.

Praise the gods!
