Civilization V Announced!

Greetings, fellow Civ fanatics! I left 2K last summer, so I'm no longer working with Firaxis. But I did want to post here in solidarity.

Civ V is gonna rule. :)

Do you have any knowledge of the system requierements?

I was supposed to continue my studies and get in to a new school this year. Way to go ruining my plans again, thanks Sid.

Sid Meier: Ruining College grades since 1996!

I'm not sure how on earth you can tell that, except via wishful thinking.

For some reason I keep getting the feeling the art looks a bit too similar to CivIV... But it could just be because the thing's still in development.

Can't wait. I'm pretty sure it's going to be a good one. :D

I'm noticing a lack of roads in the screens... has there ever been a civ with cats b4 roads?

Mmm I do noticed some roads

They aren't big though

It took an announcement like this to bring me back to civfanatics.. but I'm a little upset since I just bought my first MacbookPro not two weeks ago. I just hope they release a Mac version at the same time as the PC, or that it will run on XP that I also installed.
Anyhow, it's great news!

There better be multi-core support for this game... or I will forever call sid meier's the "lag lover"! I also hope there still be cheats in the game... I want it just the same way as Civ IV or better.

There are marshes on the first image and probably more variations in mountains. I see snow capped and snowless mountains. And Firaxis would have to introduce more mountain types as it is impossible to create mountain passes with only impassable peaks on a hex grid.

To those worrying about mods, the Civ 5 site says this;

Modability

With unprecedented modding tools, players will have unlimited options for modifying Civ 5 any way they like

So Day 1 Buy for Me

Please god bring in Zones of Control for units so we can have actual fronts

battle engine is the most interesting for me, especially the long distance support...if the game is planned to be out in fall 2010 then beta version must be in full action i guess...but how in hell no info was done till today..hmm i am not so sure about the polished version from day one - but i wish i am wrong.
BTW Fr8monkey thanks for welcome..

This is fantastic news! Just as I had thought that the game was on hold indefinitely. :D

So the hexes won. Ah well, I guess it's time to move on from being in Team Square. But seriously, it is very interesting that they have changed it, given the continuous level of discussion on these forums regarding a possible change (see here and here for examples) (although I don't know if that came from these forums originally, or some other source). I wonder if any other ideas have been taken up by Firaxis. If a move towards a Total War combat system is one of them (a new combat system is mentioned), then my efforts to discourage will have been in vain. However, the website suggest that the change is more about graphics and the introduction of ranged bombardment (something suggested on the forums many times).

Better diplomatic interaction sounds good though. It is, after all, perhaps the number one needed thing in a new Civ game.

As I said elsewhere. "unprecedented" and "unlimited" are just marketing speak and are unlikely to be completely true. They do have a reputation to maintain however, so it does bode well :P

These great news are already discussed in the German Civilization Forum. :)
It's success or failure will be defined by how moddable it is. If you give us less tools than we have for Civ4, I won't play it.
I completely agree with you in this point.
Yet, I cannot imagine that Firaxis would make the mistake to give us less modding options than they did with Civ4 (actually, I am thinking this to be a point which has made Civ4 so successful and still interesting).
It will not really limit the means of attack but can anyone tell me how this is going to affect the city footprint? I mean now you have a "fat cross".... what will Civ V cities look like?
And now we will have "fat 'circles'". I do not see any problem in this area.
The question everyone from the Civ4 forums is asking... will it be multi-threaded? Can our Quad-Cores run the game smoothly for once?
Unfortunately, here I am a bit sceptical (sp?).
I assume that the game is under development for about one year, since there are only 7 - 8 months left for completion.
So, the game logic should have been prepared for multi-core support already, yet I have not seen any such announcement.
I completely agree that missing such support would be a major disappointment, but I wouldn't bet on it at the moment.
