Civilization V ?

The move to a hex map is fantastic.

Hopefully this, and the "armies spread across the landscape" means some form of adjacency bonuses/zone of control/units-per-tile restrictions a la Military Madness is in the works.

Oh yes. I am sick and tired of the current combat system. Ok, it's the best of all Civs I've played so far, but it's just stacking siege, grunts and stack defenders. No REAL strategy.

My reactions to the "Features" section

Eighteen civs only? Well, more isn't always better.

Advisors? The city council is coming back? Huzzah! :D

Trading land? Sounds nice and realistic enough.

Armies spreading across the landscape? No more SoD you say?

Unprecedented modding tools? Sound at least as cool as Civ IV.

And that V in the logo is neat...

The "V" logo looks like something you'd see from a 1920s/30s New York City lights. :x

And hopefully we get bigger maps. Perhaps a completely new engine means a more efficient way maps are produce, so gigantic maps don't crash the game.

i think its obvious that there is 1 unit per tile restriction.
i do not like an idea but maybe it would be ok it the game, we'll see.

V is simple and powerful. And beautiful. I think V is about the coolest letter that will ever beautify a Civ game (X looks too MegaManny and L, C and D are boring).

One unit per tile sounds bad, not because I like stacking but think about what it does domestic troop movement. In the worst case you have to juggle your troops around to get them where you want them. Ever played Sokoban? If there's one unit per tile restriction, this may be like it.

Wait is this thing for real?! Looks like they are pretty far down the road in developing of CIV V, it impossible that nothing leaked before this, right?

I can't believe this is true

I think Hex is their way of doing the ZoC which went missing in 4 (but existed in 1, 2 and 3!)

This is all extreme speculation of course...

Under a hex zone of control system, you should be able to freely move your own units past friendlies (this might require roads of course, if the movement system remains unchanged).

It would be a bit problematic for a one-tile-per-turn standard like we're used to, perhaps, so maybe units could get a bit more speed overall.

Then you either are lacking in the Virtue of Faith or you are smarter than the rest of us.

I'm all faith .... (trying to sound like Cuba Gooding JR. in Jerry Maguire)

I just googled it and saw it as an announcement on numerous websites, but not IGN, I won't believe it until I see it on IGN:cool:

Oh seriously. I can't wait. I'm already high on adrenaline trying to guess what Kane really is (it'll probably be in Teh Internets in March).

I'm wondering about the hexacons though and how it will effect the city radious and culture.

If I take a peek at the screenshots I don't get it :D. But I'm not worried at all!

1 unit per tile - unlikely, but maybe. i think they put 1 unit per tile in the pics to show off the units.

By the way I play a mod with large unit formations, 1 unit per tile for naval units, ZOC for forts, etc. So I think all these are good things!

Apparently the Danish article specifically reported 1 unit per tile and mentioned Panzer General as an influence on the new combat.

Yay, new Civ. I think it's come in good time. Also, did anyone else get the feeling that maybe CivIV was too earlier for Civ to go 3D? Between the horrible performance at launch and the rather ugly at times graphics (up close anyway) it's probably still my favourite Civ (even though I played III more I think) but it seemed a bit... ahead of its time in a bad way.

I like the new logo TBH. The graphics are nice and smooth and not painful to the eyes in any way. The hex system is intriguing... should be a good idea I suppose. TBH I'm not entirely sure what difference it will make. We already could move in 8 directions, right? Oh wait, this is 6... that's less... hmmm... I'm sure I'll figure the real difference out.

By the sounds of things they're heading in the right direction. Combat ought to be mixed up a bit, especially that dumb**** idea of having artillery directly engage combat troops... seemingly at point blank range . Hopefully they bring it a bit closer to the Civ III system or at least a system that makes more sense and parallels the real-world use of artillery and planes.

1 unit per tile seems insane, I don't think there's any way they'd do that. That would change the entire way the game works... no way surely.

EDIT: Wut? An article reported 1 unit per tile!? :( What is this madness? X_X

Anyway, another thing is that I hope they deliver on their promise for better diplomacy. That seems to be a common theme for every expansion/game and we've yet to really get anything good at all. Vassals were a waste and a joke.

Who cares what halfassed drivel EA comes up with? :crazyeye:
The story has already contradicted itself and is therefore worthless. But we digress...:D

Well, if one unit per tile is used, that means the combat system is overhauled drastically. Think about city tiles!

1UPT will also mean less units, meaning that a single unit has greater significance. This is something they sought in Civ IV, that's why there's the diverse promotion system.

But the question is: is Civ V something that will make us abandon Civ IV?

Time will tell.
