Civilization VII - Gameplay Reveal Trailer (Gamescom Opening Night Live - 8/20) Discussion

Shawnee is an Exploration Age civilization that excels at utilizing natural resources. Their unique ability, Nepekifaki, gives more food for settlements built on river tiles but slightly reduces food for any cities not built on rivers. Its associated wonder is the Serpent Mound.
Exploration age? I wonder if that’s the name of a specific age or something more to do with a Millennia-style age system? Likely the former.

Woah a lot to unpack in the images.

My initial reactions:

Art style looks nice, a sensible progression from Civ 6 with a nice vibrant colour palette but less cartooniness. Nothing to blow me away, but the map and cities look good.

Districts look to be back, as do natural disasters. Navigable rivers and terrain levels are interesting!

Augustus vs Hatshepsut? Hopefully not Cleopatra again.

Not thrilled that Tecumseh is a preorder DLC.

Exploration age has been used in academics as a more broads/world-encompassing alternative to the renaissance.

it’s still eurocentric, nominally, but it is generally more relevant to what the world was experiencing

With sprawling cities, will the maps be super big now? If not, I feel like cities will either be cramped or civs will be small. I wonder if civ7 will favor "tall" now since the focus will be on a small number of cities but really developed and sprawling.

Overall, civ7 looks gorgeous. I can't wait for the gameplay showcase later to learn more about the actual game mechanics, like diplomacy, combat, etc.

I did not see elevation clearly, it could have just been mountains and blocked coast tiles. And I think elevation was a minimum, since I have been expecting a real globe for eons now. Other games already did it.

I saw a waterfall in one of the views, so seems like elevation is in.

Also, so much to unpack. I spotted at least a dozen wonders. I don't have my full setup though (I'm on holiday) so I'll leave that to y'all sleuths.

Some observations in some of the material:
City state alliances? New system to suzerain?
Leader personas return! Leader pack must have been a trial run.
“Associated wonder”?!? Are we getting a specific wonder for each Civ?
Walls in (not just around) cities!

Looks incredible!

At least there's an indigenous North American civ in the base game this time, even if it's day one DLC. That's a step up from Civ6.
it does look like either the maya or aztecs are base game this time around, just based off the architecture of some of the civs we saw

Oh my goodness the cities look absolutely amazing!!! City building is one of my favorite aspects of the game so I'm incredibly excited to see this! I do have my starting concerns about how the leaders look though if I'm honest.

All in all the trailer looks great, you guys at Firaxis have done an amazing job!!!

Looks like cities are enormous. Or could just be a small portion of the map.

this was one of my primary complaints with civ 6, where the cities were so sprawling it felt like the map was very small in comparison. hopefully map scale is changed here so that cities feel sprawling yet more appropriate, and the countrysides are meaningful
