Civilization VII - Official Gameplay Showcase Discussion (8/20)

Did anyone catch the gameplay changes to the combat? I wasn't totally focused.

I'm really happy with basically everything they added and changed, the new district system where they're the old structures, and the urban sprawl is realistic and the towns become cities, and the rivers are navigable

It just also looks amazing and sounds amazing

But why god why with this Civ changing feature. I understand it for "balance reasons" but I hate it. The biggest problem is how immersion breaking it is. I don't understand how they tried to spin it as more immersive

So much to absorb... wow!

So, things I've noticed from the screenshots you all dutifully posted:
  1. Migrants exist (implying an Immigration system and more distinct populations)
  2. No Amenities- there's a return to a Happiness system, at least in name.
  3. Settlements are split into Cities and Towns (which was touched on in the showcase), but each of these has a definite cap
    1. Side note, them hinting at a divide between urban and rural districts makes me so happy. They're taking inspiration from the Civ VI City Lights mod, which is one of my favorites. Also, we finally have a distinction for settlements that are just for resources! Perfect!!!!
  4. Unique Civilian units are back on the table!
  5. Techs have levels (there's a Writing II, implying a Writing I and potentially a Writing III)
  6. Army system returns, and seemingly with military units being simplified into just Infantry, Ranged, and Cavalry
  7. Civs seem to gain bonuses toward wonders that they would have had historically, which is neat.
Edit: another thing I've noticed is that Egypt, for example, has 3 uniques, but two are buildings/infrastructure and only one is a unit! I think we should expect more of this in the future.

My big question now for someone on the team to address somehow: I'm due for a new graphics card and I want to know the system requirements so I can have my computer ready at launch come 11 Feb.

I'm surprised you guys are so negative. The way the civ-switching looks like it's going to be handled seems to have what I had hoped Humankind would be; progression with logic and context attached, not just "I'm Venice today, I'm Russia tomorrow!"

Very excited to see what the unique mechanics are for each ageto

I'm assuming the expansion packs will be additional ages?

It's so immersion breaking to be Egypt one turn and then suddenly you're France.
From what I gathered, each Age changing would not be just "click a button and you change Age", but rather a progressive timeline with a crisis intensifying and culminating, so that the change will seem impactful.

The reason Humankind is boring is not the culture switching, but because how generic they made it. Each player was changing culture independantly, with no requirement at all, and had very few specific things for them. It all seemed generic, and so it was boring.

Here, with only three ages, each change will be impactful. As they said, each age will feel as a game in itself, and so you'd stay with your civ for the same game. As Ed Beach said: it'd be like a trilogy, different books with big endings, and you end up a new one in a calming manner, it's the same story but not the same book.

Hopefully it's also not Shawnee to America, but more like England to America. :shifty:
Watch it be the Iceni in Antiquity.
so then what's the modern equivalent? Realistically, they're going to force us to move on to the US from the Shawnee, and any other indigenous north american civ that historically existed in what's now the US.

Imo, the map looks rather cluttered, to be honest. At least in those close up shots made for the trailer. Maybe the normal game camera helps a bit with that...

From someone who wanted them to copy / lift so much from Amplitude over the years I cannot fathom how they copied the one feature that caused Amplitude to fail vs Firaxis.

The lack of full screen leaders with their bits of personality and leader / culture switching will serve as a death knell for this iteration.

Shame too because the city changes, rivers, & combat terrain improvements had me hyped.

Other than that the art overall is nice.

They are smoking crack if they think I am preordering this at those prices with the horrible leader / civ switching mechanics.

Im.afraid, you are too optimistic here. It will be an immersive kiilling nightmare. Never imagined, they acctually would copy Humankind's worst feature, it just doesnt make any sense.

Even if it ends up being a disaster, and I kind of feel like it will for the type of game I like to play, I hope that Firaxis sticks with it for continued support. I've seen a lot of promising games suffer terrible launches recently, and several were dropped by their studios as a result

Well, the art looks stunning, the map is kinda supercluttered, but still somehow attractive :)

That was such a subversion of expectations, btw, that I became intrigued again. I'll see what comes in future videos, not much gameplay detail revealed yet, apart from the looks and very broad strokes. But I like their boldness. Some major shake-up was needed indeed. Let's see what can they make better of what some latter days' competitors might have tried with varying degree of success. This looks like a new... beginning for the franchize. Alpha Centauri spaceship got into some spacehole and emerged into a parallel Universe to populate a brand new Earth with quite different laws of everything.

It now remains to see if they have adequate coding capabilities. Civ VI have shattered my trust in this respect in them to the finest pieces. So I'm still not preordering at this moment.

Glad I'm not the only one with that thought. I had a really hard time making out where and what things were.

What I really don't like is that civilizations that peaked in the Medieval age will be sidelined.
For example, you can't put Byzantine neither in Antiquity nor in Exploration age, as civilization. The Medieval age is in Europe is literally defined by their begging and ending.
