PASOK wins Crete-Cyprus Elections
- Andreas Papandreou, the victor of the elections
The socialist PASOK and the center-right New Democracy competed closely in the 1961 Crete-Cyprus elections. The main issues that troubled voters were the islands' economic development, the loans undertaken by PASOK and the invasion of the Aegean. With the GDP having been increased by 200% and the invasion of the Aegean Islands being a success, the PASOK has managed to garner huge amount of support.
However, the loans that the government undertook in order to increase the GDP have played right into the hands of New Democracy, with some voters who would have otherwise voted for PASOK voting for New Democracy out of fear of a debt crisis. New Democracy has also been successful in uniting the conservative and right wing sections of Crete-Cyprus and of bring back to the party voters who had defected to PASOK in 1957 elections.
But despite this successes, the victory of PASOK has been decisive:
PASOK - 61%
New Democracy - 35%
Communist Party - 4%
The Communist Party has seen some of it's voters defecting to PASOK, but the defections have been minimal. Although the Communist Party is a minor political group in the political scene of Crete-Cyprus, it is the most coherent one and the one with the most loyal supporters.
The government has announced that it shall continue the "Five Years Economic Plan" launched last year and that it will focus mainly on the economic development of the islands and the repayment of the debts.
Konstantinos Karamanlis remains ND's Leader
- Konstantinos Karamanlis, leader of New Democracy and former President (1953 - 1957)
Despite his electoral defeat, Konstantinos Karamanlis remains the undisputed leader of New Democracy. All prominent members of the party have stated that Konstantinos Karamanlis has their full support. And for a good reason. Konstantinos Karamanlis was the only right wing President of the islands, but except for this symbolic reason, the current elections have also bolstered his popularity in the party.
He has united once again all right wing voters and conservative political forces, he has managed to get some PASOK voters to defect to New Democracy and has polled historically high for New Democracy. Some analysts predict that unless PASOK continues to have major successes, Konstantinos Karamanlis could seriously threaten Andreas Papandreou in the 1965 elections, something unthinkable only a few years ago.
However, some other analysts warn that the celebrations by New Democracy may be premature. In those elections, PASOK had almost double the amount of voters of New Democracy, the popularity of Andreas Papandreou is all time high with 70% of the population rating him as a good Prime Minister in several polls conducted by newspapers while the economy shows signs of quick growth.
