Colonization First Impressions

I really don't like how infrequently Free Colonists appear in the immigration pool. In the original game, they appeared often. I love Free Colonists because you can get the natives to train them.

Can't you clear their specialty in col2? If so, it would never ever be better to get a free colonist over a specialist. They are of course much better than criminals and indentured servants.

Yes you can clear the profession.

The bigger problem is the number of natives and indentured servants you get, that you can't do much with. And, also, in the LATE game, you can't realistically train your free colonists anymore...

But, yes, you can clear anyone's existing specialty with the button when the unit is selected. (It's a lot more difficult to navigate to this on the city screen, so just exit that and select the unit itself.)

Train them in native settlements. Unless you wiped them all out. :)

indentured servants -> Free missionary. Just convert them on the docks and ship them of to the new world if you dont have other uses for them.

Nope. But it's quite common to not be able to get certain types of specialists depending on the map generated. I only had 'fur trapper' appear on the third game, for instance. 'Cotton Planter' only appeared in the first one.

They will produce more in whatever occupation you put them being a specialist, than if you leave them an indentured servant.

Again, if you're able to do that, reasonably. It may not be a reasonable expection, but it shouldn't have to be, because the schools should flippin' work. See?

Indian settlement training. ;)

The Spanish have a very good reason too: Conquistador trait means you can rack up a lot of money fast. :)

Which begs the question "why ever attack natives". Playing my first game and I can't for the life of me find a reason to attack them.

I certainly haven't had good cause with my first game. Sure, a few of my settlements cost big to appease the locals (good old Monte), but that has been easily compensated by the combined gifts, trading and training I have got from them. It is just as well that our relations are good, because I haven't put anything substantial yet into my military and I am basically living on the their sufference.

Especially when attacking the Incans for example, who have a trait that yields more gold when their villages are pillaged (yes, you read that right).

I didn't notice this until my 5th game (of restarts, of course), but take a look at the native traits if you haven't. As opposed to colonial traits which help you win, the indian traits also help you (or your competitors), as opposed to them, win. Some are converted more easily, some sell land cheaper, some get pillaged more lucratively, etc.

Hey Dale, on your reply to me:
Just click on the profession button (has tools going round in a circle) and you can assign a job in the colony, or outside colony job immediately (if the requisites are met like tools or guns).
I was able to figure out what was going on. If you are in the map view, looking at your colonist unit, then what you said is correct. I see the button you are talking about and it works fine. My problem was that I was in in the city/colony view because I was trying to see what squares I could work and what resources were available, etc. and in that view you don't have the circle/tools button AND you cannot right-click and assign them a job. You have to drag and drop. Live and learn I suppose!
