Community Deity Game #1 - Persia

About achievement D is it ok to get an archer from ruin then upgrade it ? Or ok to buy range unit ? (buying and building is not technically the same thing !)

question about "keep 10 immortals alive." does that mean that you can't upgrade them?

Nice win! Congratulations for being the first CDG entrant! Glad to see someone getting us started :)

Only achievement I might have got is the score one - I assume this is final score, not base score? My final score was 4996 but my base score was only 2898.

Sadly, I mean base score. You were SO close!

maybe use the QUOTE formatting syntax less in OP?

I like the way it looks. I don't think it's a major problem.

For A, I am going to assume that upgrading them is okay.

Yes.

For B and C, do you just suggest just keeping track by hand on scratch paper?

Yes, and then you can check in your log at the end.

For D, I am going to assume that you just mean archers, CBs, and XBs. Since you specify “build”, I will be keeping any scarchers and CS gifts.

Yes, I mean 'build'. If you are gifted it, you can use it. Or ignore the achievement altogether, as I personally decided to do. But my definition of ranged units includes:-

Archers, Chariot Archers, Composite Bowman, Crossbows, Gatlings, Machine Guns, Bazookas

'Siege' units are allowed.

Ruin/CS gift = OK. Buying is not.

No, you can. Men wearing skirts in the 19th century would be too much to inflict even on your worst enemy. (j/k)

I'VE UPDATE THE OP TO CLARIFY THE ACHIEVEMENTS

If it's all the same with all of you, I'll wait some more before cranking up the spreadsheet, I have worked out a general concept and now it's on to finer bits

As for my game, finished a 3 city NC on turn 78, it's shaping up nicely for a vicious sweep of Persian T-34s

Btw I stole a total of 4 workers, not too bad

Fun map, fun game. Thanks consentient!

Early scouting got me 4/5 ruins and 5x 30 gold CS gifts. No scarchers, and the CS have only been donating spearmen :( but my conscience is clear at least on that count.

DOW'd the far north AI to steal a settler. I tried working on nearest AI city with Immortals but got nowhere, so peaced-out pretty quickly and got a DOF a couple turns later.

DOW'd the crazy one who was apparently scouting my land with workers. That went terribly and I had to resign after losing a city. My Immortal “spam” was facing longswords and knights and I could not compete.

So I reloaded to reconsider that idea, and hard built workers. Made a DOW on a soft target to try and get some XP when 1st GA came online. Was okay, but again not getting anywhere near taking cities.

It has been interesting delaying Civil Service for as long a possible. Immortal count turn before CS: 15. Turn after: 13. :cringe:

Really, I don't think I will be taking cities until after rifling. That could be okay.

I like the way it looks. I don't think it's a major problem.

Yes, it looks good, but it works poorly. It is not a major problem, but I think it is needless problem. There are other attractive ways to frame text that don't interfere with the REPLY button.

Yes, and then you can check in your log at the end.

Oh! Is that something available outside the game? Or something that can be extracted from a save file? Where do I learn more?

I think he refers to the log in your victory screen, where you can see graphs of every category and how the map changed (filled with cities) as time moved on, which is something I really like and always watch :)

Thanks, I actually realized that base score made more sense after I posted that... I don't think I've ever had a Dom game with less than 3000 final score. Shouldn't have donated so many cities to the AI.

Btw, I noticed that the map was created with the NQ script -
Spoiler :
does that mean Strategic Balance? I just noticed that there's oil beside every capital.

A. Keep 10 Immortals alive from the Ancient Era to the turn of victory. You can upgrade them, obviously. - 3 pts.

You specified Ancient Era; that means we'd have to produce these Immortals before entering Classical (ex. Philosophy). Did you intend this restriction?

Not at all. I meant that they become available then, so these units (even when upgraded) are 'kept alive' through the eras. You can delay Civil Service and build them whenever you like. Just remember to build them as Immortals otherwise you'll never get the 'Double Heal' perk, which is the whole point of them ;)

(not a specific reminder for you, but for everyone)

Spoiler :

Missed Oracle by 2 turns, and also had only 6 Immortals at the time of Civil Service. First 15 turns of a Golden Age is on

BUT!

I want a special achievement for a turn 94 Petra with both Egypt and Morocco playing  Turn 100 Education, gold is through the roof currently.

Update turn 134. I got a Crossbow as a GIFT! I'm expecting Secularism shortly and after that it's all the way Commerce

Are you guys both lawyers? Working for opposite sides obviously...

No, not a lawyer.
The current wording states the immortals need to be alive during the ancient era and on the turn of victory. My guess was that consentient actually meant:

A. Keep 10 Immortals alive to the turn of victory. You can upgrade them, obviously. - 3 pts.

If he did mean produce the immortals during the Ancient era, that would change how I play this game.

I should trying indulging in that again. I gave up more than a year ago because it took so long to load. Guess I could count razed cities easy enough -- and it would be fun as they blink out!

Are Golden Ages displayed prominently enough?

Can that victory screen -- and the graphs -- be recalled from a save? Or do you suggest saving just before the VC screen pops?

FWIW, I got out of the habit of saves-just-before-victory because, with previous civs, that would clog the “high scores” screen with multiple copies of the same game. But does V even keep record of your best games? If so, how do I get to that?

...and also had only 6 Immortals at the time of Civil Service.

It is really interesting to me how the goal for ten has so changed my game!

For example, I stole some tech with 1 turn left of research because the only other choice was like 6 turns for CS. (Bet I could have planned ahead for that one!)

The other example is Worlds Fair, where I am usually pretty competitive. Cranking on the UUs meant not having Workshops anywhere. I will be lucky to get a 2nd place...

T233 Dom after a surprisingly fun game though much prolonged after the builder in me took power and I was building WWs & all sorts of cool stuff to prepare something what turned out to be a total overkill in the end - SBs are really not needed when the opposition has Triremes.

Also, had I realized the size of map I would've changed few things but I very much prefer this over the average size land masses.

Since I started the game without noticing the achievements I didn't pay any attention to them but introduced few optional rules for myself; no siege units or stepping into waters with any sort of units among them as I wanted to avoid the usual Arties/BS late game.

Only one thing really annoyed me in the game - WTH can't I shoot the false prophets? Dead or exiled I don't care but don't sell your crap on my door when I didn't have my dobermanns blocking the path to my backyard.

Proper write-up tomorrow - the game itself took long enough.

Nice going ! I'll have the spreadsheet prototype tomorrow hopefully, been a bit busy (as usual, sigh), and any feedback is welcome, natch

T240 Domination - Achievements Completed: B, C, E

Damn you Grendeldef! Not only did you pip me by a few turns but you freely admitted to dawdling whereas I was pushing all-out for as fast a finish as possible! :p

Spoiler :
Since last update, I basically had to slog long wars through the shortest route (lowest number of city captures towards Marrakesh, but even then it meant I HAD to complete the razing achievement just to get there!

The AI tech-ed very fast in this game and I was always fighting similar strength units or better units until Artillery, and even then my Artillery were facing Infantry, so not easy or pleasant. Sheer numbers and careful manoeuvring minimised my losses after taking out Cathy, and insistence on a pretty good peace deal with Hiawatha gave me the funds to spam units, although it kept me worried about a DoW from him later which would complicate things. Thankfully that DoW never came.

Grrrr.....I'm beginning to get competitive in my old age! :D

[I'd challenge Grendeldef to a drinking contest as a rematch, but I've drunk with too many Finns to make that mistake again. Maybe, like Death in Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, I should just accept I am beaten! OK Grendel, come with me, I'll take you to meet God, Einstein and some Martians...]

Argh! My pikes are upgrading to Lancers. No idea why the mod is not working. It shows under details, and the save game file loaded. I was teaching much too slow anyway.

Sorry about that but yeah the late game was something like this: while dealing with the furthest opponent I thought that I needed planes for the
Spoiler :
southern pacifist
who was first to hit Modern and then I realized that I couldn't reach there with GWBs unless taking a or even 2 extra cities from the
Spoiler :
German chick of the tundra
and since I had some 15 workers to pamper I didn't need any more activity so it was an easy choice to go for Bombers and (mostly) build other cool stuff meanwhile.

The reality was that Machine Guns would've been very sufficient as the last opponent's Army was largely a Navy hence the logistics, range & double cover MGs tore a 100 def city apart in 2 or 3 turns without taking much of any dmg themselves.
The 2nd to last opponent I could've taken down just with highly promoted infantry which were one-shotting everything that came by for a violent hug.
By a huge margin, the civ furthest away was the hardest to deal with as his UU is deadly and I slightly miss-timed the war so those were present though not by usual numbers.

In the end I had 4 GSs left, all 3rd tier Order policies free to take, beakers overflow enough to get me to SBs in 3 turns without bulbing and an Army too large to bother to move around.

BUT I thoroughly enjoyed the space & slightly slower pace in general even though the game wasn't that hard after getting few workers in the late 20s/early 30s. Not that that makes a game necessarily a hard one but my mind is set in a way that workerless empire on T20 is a failure.

[I'd challenge Grendeldef to a drinking contest as a rematch, but I've drunk with too many Finns to make that mistake again.

Yeah, don't challenge peeps in their national sport without preparing to lose but in my current state of training I fear there would still be a contest - I'm a pathetic amateur in these days but few decades back... damn the getting old business hampers everything.

For the mods part I can say that everything worked flawlessly and on hindsight of the achievements

A) 2 or 3 short though I had exceptionally large number of melee units in the end
B) few short which is a surprise - usually I start enough bonfires to meet any criteria
C) easily met; one from Liberty, one natural pre-WF boosted with a GA and one perpetual after WF
D) not a chance as I built archers before noticing these
E) not a clue, yet - I need to check this. Scores were the thing in Civ 2 but obsolete in Civ 5 from my perspective

---add.---

E) 7658 points so this one is covered
