Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

I don't think I can possibly understate how much of a difference having an SSD instead of an HDD as the system drive makes for how fast the computer feels in general use.

Take this computer for $400.

It comes with a slower processor, 6GB RAM, with $100 you can get a 128GB SSD to put in the laptop and an external enclosure for the original HDD to use as a backup drive.
 
Yeah, having SSD as the system drive speeds things up quite a bit. What's the problem with the 24GB SSD that comes with the laptop I linked though?

BTW I should mention that I am looking to buy this for general web development, browsing, cyberstalking, lightweight gaming, that sort of thing. So I don't need the latest and greatest.
 
I was trying to run a program. At first I thought it needed GTK but that didn't work and then I realized it needed GTK-# (pound/hash) then it worked. What's the difference?

I'd say that's a decent deal. The processor's a bit weak, but doesn't use much power as your average processor, so it isn't bad. That there's an SSD at all, even if it is used as cache, is impressive at that price point, and a definite plus. And even being Lenovo's low-end series, I'd much rather take it as a Lenovo than an Acer (probably the most likely competitor at that price point) from a reliability standpoint. The only standout minus is the 4-cell battery, which is kind of puny. The 9-hour battery life claim seems suspect, and I wouldn't count on more than half of that in standard usage, but the processor should use sufficiently little that battery life will be decent.

4 USB ports, half of them USB 3, is also quite good for the price point. The Ethernet's low-end, but if you'd be using it mostly on WiFi anyway that doesn't matter.

On the other hand, I'm not familiar with this particular model. I'd look up reviews of it to make sure it doesn't have any common issues.

It looks like GTK # is used to let Mono (.NET) programs use the GTK toolset. So if you were making a C# program, and wanted it to use the GTK look and feel in Linux, you'd probably use GTK # to accomplish that. Wiki Link, and official webpage.

For meaningful suggestions you would need to specify what you intend to do with a laptop.

Full desktop replacement? Then this Lenovo is not a very good choice.

But if you look for a portable secondary machine that is still good enough for light workloads and even some basic gaming, the Lenovo is very good value for money.

Even the nominally weak battery is apparently sufficient for about 5 hours runtime under light workload.

I you want something significantly better, you will likely have to pay much more than $500.
 
Is there any settings in Win 8 or the latest IE that could cause you to log out of a website without you intentionally doing it? I habe found that when I am typing a long post in CFC on my wife's new laptop, when I hit the post button, it takes me to a screen saying I cannot post as I am not logged in. I don't know why it does this.
 
It's probably the website that logged you out after a certain amount of time. There should be a checkbox that says "stay signed in" or something like it, make sure it's checked.
 
Ok. It's just odd because I will be typing for 10 mins and not switching to other programs, not closing the window, not letting the computer go to sleep and then I am secretly logged off. I do not have this issue on other computers.
 
I have a E4500 Core duo 2.2 GHz processor. Can someone please help me overclock it...Dont worry about the cooling it can handle it I just want to clock it to 2.5 so I can play Arma II with no lag. I tried to do it via BIOS but the options are "locked". I tried to use a program but it demands a PLL but I do not know how to find one.
 
I never figured out: Is there a keyboard shortcut for 'run as admin'? Ive been trying to figure out how to do that.
 
I created an infinite loop using NTFS symbolic links (don't ask, I just wanted to see what would happen). now I can't get rid of it. How do I remove it?

Right click > Delete. I'm not the most smart at times. :lol: The files trapped inside got lost, which was unfortunate, but I had a backup anyways.

Speaking abiut this, what exactly is the difference between all those reparse points? My brain does not comprehend.
 
How does one use a registry file (*.reg that is openable in notepad) to delete a specific key?
