Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

Which would be better to buy: A webcam and/or microphone for communication, or a router to get the Internet from the computer in my room and an access point for my DSi?

which do you need more?

Question: How do you use SyncToy (or another free program) to sync a single file? Schedule required. What happened was when I reinstalled I lost my Winamp playlist, which was in the Winamp program file. a backup is in my Music folder but I always forget to save it, so i just want to automatically sync that one file at midnight every day. Google gave me mostly FTP things.

Personally I would go with webcam/mic

Your needs may differ. How important is an internet connection from your room to you?

Too late, got the router. I doubt there was a cam/mic at Staples anyways. :p

I'll probably install it correctly, but if I don't, I'll likely call you guys.

When I scroll through a folder in Irfanview, it also opens text files and PDF files and errors on various other files. How do i make it only show image files? I looked through the options and I also looked through the help file but i probably mist it.

EDIT: I found it. it was under the Extensions in the settings....

I plugged in my external hard drive and got a random BSOD and I caught a glimps of saying something about Universal Plug and Play and faulty drivers. In the device manager, where would I look for that? its a SeaGate. I dont recall installing any special drivers for itand I dont see anything in the device manager saing SeaGate. There are drivers on the external but I cant plug it in to install them.

Edit: The debugger says this:
Error: PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR I google that now

Another Edit: Not much luck .... what is an "infrared reciever"? I get a lot of that or stuff programming, different languages, silly people plugging things in and out rapidly.

EDIT: Oh crazy! I turned off the reboot and plugged it in again to write down all the BSOD info and it didn't BSOD.

Windows being its usual glitchy self. See if it happens again, if it doesnt, it's just windows.

An infrared reciever is a device that recieves input from an infrared device - typically a remote control.

The golden rule with windows: if it doesnt work, reboot. If it still doesnt work, find help :)

Thanks.

Strange situation: I was stupid and accidenally deleted a folder of AVIs off my external -- they weren't on the data partition. So anyways I do manage to recover them, but they all have weird filenames (e.g. $RF7XTMC) and are chopped up into short (1-3 seconds) video files. Some are unplayable even though the program said the integrity was 100%, and i suspect that they may be missing header info or something. Is there a way to put them back the way they were?

EDIT: Weird, all the unplayable ones are 544 bytes.... leads me to think it was chopped up into small pieces.

ANOTHER EDIT: OK, doesnt look like there was anything important in them anyways as i went through all the working files and everything is there.

This is perhaps more to do with networking on the Internet. Whenever my cable Internet gets borked (eg. Drops connection). Is it normal for my cable modem's LED lights to all remain on, especially the activity light? Eventhough my computer and iPod are saying they are not connecting to any servers.

I'm wondering if it's normal because when I tried to use the Internet, the activity LED does not blink at all. It stays lit. Previously when the cable Internet whent out the modem kept cycling to try to find a signal like it normally should.

Is it also normal that Windows 7 automatically disables my Local Area Connection if there are no connections to it?

Im defragging my external hard drive and its making weird sounds. are weird sounds normal during a defrag.

Though one important question to ask is if it makes wierd sounds when it's not in defrag, such as when the computer is using it. Though you might consider yourself lucky on catching it early during defrag instead of catching it while you are copying data onto your HDD. What I would do is get a new HDD and move everything you have from that HDD to the newer one. Don't use the HDD thats making wierd noises as backup as something might be lose.

Though for clearer clarification, what sort of "weird noises"? If it's the click of death, then all bets are off for that HDD.

I just remember something. On my old computer, the drive made the same sorts of noises, and i remember being told they were normal. Its hard to describe.

Its under warranty. I told my mom and she said she would find the warranty papers. with my luck, they probably got thrown out.

Im looking up a diagnostic tool

clicking is never normal. transfer your files ASAP or you will be a sad panda.

OK, thanks.

Question: Is there a program that can somehow find duplicate video files with different checksums? I was thinking by comparing frames or something. Not much use with google.

Also, is there a program like this available for Vista?

With different checksums? Its possible, but it would be very lengthy and very resource-intensive, so I doubt something like that exists.

I suppose itd be easier to find them manually then.
