Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

How long can an S-video cable be without seeing too much loss of quality? I want to hook my computer to output video onto my television to watch some downloaded videos, but would have to rearrange furniture to do so. A long S-video cable would solve the problem, but before I buy a long one, I want to know if I'll see any loss of quality.

I'm looking on Amazon, Best Buy and RadioShack at the moment, and there are a wide range of prices for seemingly indistinguishable cables (in terms of length)... So reviewers claim that they only get b&w images and get a horrible quality, while others praise the cable. Any recommendations? I need something 10-12 feet long. I'll check newegg now I guess.

This is perhaps more to do with networking on the Internet. Whenever my cable Internet gets borked (eg. Drops connection). Is it normal for my cable modem's LED lights to all remain on, especially the activity light? Eventhough my computer and iPod are saying they are not connecting to any servers.

I'm wondering if it's normal because when I tried to use the Internet, the activity LED does not blink at all. It stays lit. Previously when the cable Internet whent out the modem kept cycling to try to find a signal like it normally should.

Is it also normal that Windows 7 automatically disables my Local Area Connection if there are no connections to it?
Nothing in regards to this? Because it just happened today :(

I had to do a complete restart of my computer and it got the router working again.

S-Video isn't HD, so you wont get more than 640x480 off of it. If the video is in HD, and you have an HD TV, it depends on what kind of jacks you have on your video card and your TV. Component cable, HDMI, and VGA/DVI are all HD connectors. Chances are you will have VGA/DVI as an output. (new video cards can do HDMI)

I installed the router using the setup CD and it works perfectly. :D

Another question: Are you able to run games on a computer from your USB flash drive if it's connected to a computer?
For example, I download FreeCiv and copy it on my flash drive. I unplug it and plug the drive into another computer. Without copying FreeCiv onto the computer itself, can I run the game because my flash drive has it?

Depends if it needs to read the registry. If it does, you have to install it before it will work.

depends on the game. Take a look at this.

Since that has stealth, and I skimmed through the description of stealth, it doesn't make any changes to the registry, so it probably doesn't need to read it.

Also, I downloaded it from the main site, which has a higher version. :p

How can I get .avi files onto my iPod?

Off the top of my head, I think you need to convert the .avi file to a format readable by the iPod (I'm unfamiliar w/ iPods, so keep that in mind :p )

A couple of tools that might help:

Videora iPod Converter
Any-Video-Converter (AVC)

Other video sources
If you did not purchase videos from the iTunes Store, they are may not be in a format that you can play on your iPhone/iPod. In many cases, you can convert them to the correct format using iTunes or QuickTime.

Using iTunes: Select a video and choose Advanced > Create iPod or iPhone Version
Using Mac OS X v10.6: Open the video in QuickTime Player and choose Share > iTunes and then select the iPhone & iPod option.
If you're using a Mac with iLife installed, you can also use iMovie to export a movie in an iPhone/iPod-compatible format. For instructions refer to Downloading your movies to your iPod or iPhone.

I suggest using HandBrake as it will be faster, and it too has presets for all the different kinds of ipods.

you need to delete some files to make it work

Well, if it's too hard to play it on a flash drive, could I just copy the files to Program Files, run it, and delete the files afterward? I'm guessing not...

you could copy a portable app to anywhere on the hard drive. Sometimes for portable apps i want to run once I have a folder on the desktop called Temp.

Question: on uTorrent a peer has 0.0 relevance yet I am downloading from them. is this an issue with rounding?

EDIT: grrrrrr. I hit the quote button.

Software4students do an awesome deal on Windows 7, but they only seem to do an upgrade version. Can I still install this on a computer that isn't running Windows? It says it requires a licenced edition of Windows to install, but is that only if I wish to upgrade? Help would be v much appreciated, thanks.

And it is considered piracy - by Microsoft - if you install it that way. Of course, if you have to erase your hard drive w/ XP on it to get 7 on, which is technically illegal....
