Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

UPDATE:

I think I figured it out... The Video card has a small fan on it and wasn't spinning and the edges of the card were hot. I got it push started (literally LOL). I will keep an eye on it and see if it keeps being stupid.

My mom randomly stuck a fan on top of the computer, will the vibration hurt the computer.

I don't think so. I think a large/constant vibration can effect your spinning HDD (iirc), but I don't think you have anything to worry about from just a fan.

But from what I've heard about your mom, I say let her worry about it. Just be like "Oh mom, is it a good idea to put a fan on your computer?"

And if she doesn't know, tell her to google it. Than you ought to be absolved of all responsibility.

Well I dunno:

Mom's search terms: the computer will not turn on all it does is show a black screen and the little light on the monitor turns orange after the windows screen shows up and even a reboot doesn't work.

My search term: black screen after windows loading screen

(the monitor in question would automatically go into standby whenever the screen went black -- I know this from launching games and such)

Does poor English in a program mean anything in general? (Other than the fact that its likely made in another country.)

To me, it would mean its not a commercial or professional program. Probably some home user or student coding in their spare time. Or it was just translated poorly from the original language.

Double post.

I'm just messing around with HTML/CSS for a blogger blog.

I can't figure out how to change the color for links within a blog's posts, without changing the color of the links found elsewhere (including the post's title, sidebar, footer, etc.)

I'm also having a hard time changing the color manually within the 'new post' editor. Is the CSS in the template overriding what I'm doing in the post?

After lot's of googling/browsing, I found:

Code:
.post a {
  color:#FF0000;
text-decoration:underline;
text-transform:uppercase;
}

Which changed the post's colors without changing the sidebar's, BUT it also changed the post title :(

is there a way to view all Firefox bookmarks at once without the folder structure

well I have 4000 of them.

I got this funny error when I opened a certain folder with a video file in it. The scrollbar kept going until explorer crashed. I fixed it by turning off thumbnails for the video thumbnail. Can somebody tell me how to fix it so I can turn the thumbnails back on?

The file was a Quicktime MOV extension, AVC codec. Im doing a quick google search right now, lots of coding which doesn't help end-user much. I ran Codec Tweak Tool to "remove broken codecs" but it didn't detect anything.

Why are the nice 256 x 256 icons I made all squashed and tiny when I try to attach it to a shortcut or folder? I tried several different programs and tried refreshing and even a reboot. They show up fine in the thumbnails.

Try making icons that are the same size as your default ones.

On windows XP:
1) Go to display properties (right click desktop -> properties)
2) Select "Appearance" tab
3) Click the "Advanced" button.
4) Use drop down menu to select "Icon"
5) The icon size can be seen/changed here

That's how it's done on XP, don't know what you use, but you can probably google it.

No, other 256x256 icons (I downloaded off the internet) work, just not the ones i made myself :(

Do warranties cover accidents where someone besides the owner of the laptop accidentally drops and damages it?

if it covers accidents, you should get repair cost appraised, get the warranty to repair it "because you dropped it" and then rough up whoever dropped it, if it doesn't cover accidents then I hope it isn't expensive to repair

I have an MKV file. The audio codec is FLAC. I am trying to encode it to a 600 MB AVI. AutoGK doesn't support it, and Avidemux and VirtualDubMod both crashed (Avidemux I think was due to the audio codec, dunno about the other). I looked into Avanti/ffmpeg but Im not sure how to get a specific output filesize. I tried something called mkv2avi but 4 hours in (at 95%) it crashed and made me very angry. Does anybody have any other suggestions? I looked at these.

I figured it out almost by mistake. I found a program in my downloads folder called FAVC and went to see what it was (I knew it was something videos). And I managed to get the video to convert to a DVD and from here its fairly simple to use AutoGK :)
