Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

64-bit versions of Windows have no 16-bit compatibility.

I know, they were preserved for 32 bit, and the problems were copied to 64 bit, but compatibility broke

My sister's computer is unbearably slow, so I'm thinking of donating some RAM from my old computer since I've got extra. Is there any way to know ahead of time if it will be compatible or not? I don't think the two machines are terribly different, one is an Intel Pentium 4 from 2003 running XP and other is a AMD Anthlon X2 running Vista from about 2006.

They could be and probaly are completely different. If you open it up and look on the ram there should be a sticker with the letter DDR or PC followed by some numbers. If the numbers don't match whats in her computer then it is a really bad idea to mix them. There is also http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html which you can install to see the numbers.

The pentium 4 is likely a DDR1 (or god forbid, RAMBUS) machine while the X2 is probably DDR2. These two memories are not compatible with each other.

Yeah thats why i said that 16-bit programs inherently wont run on 64-bit. Im not sure if "inherently" is really the right word but its the closest I could find to my meaning.

I doubt it would be rambus. Thats always been a rare thing to come across, so I can't see a company like dell using such parts.

I have an old dell system (well, really its just the motherboard, ram and cpu now) thats got a whole gig of RAMBUS.

There were a few systems that had RAMBUS. I believe the Dimension 8100 was one of them.

Can those robot email harvesters pick up alt tags for images?

Thanks.

I found Civilization 5 not-too-expensive and it is on layaway for Christmas. However I heard that you have to mess around to bring up Steam games in the Windows Game Explorer. Has anyone had trouble with that? The other Civ games will automatically pop up.

dont bother buying civ5. you probably wont like it. it has none of the qualities that civ4 offers.

Thanks.

Why not just use the Civ V shortcut

How did I figure at least one person would say "Don't buy it"? Sigh.

Id ask in the Civ5 forum but it would get buried under heaps of people probably saying that.

ask anyway. some peopel will convince you to buy it, some will convince you not to buy it. listen to both sides, and then make your decision.
