Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread

Hi guys,
I would like to know, what configuration would I need to play the 18+ civ games in BtS. I have a 2 GB Ram, Sempron 3000, Ati HD 4670, I am planning to upgrade my computer, mostly for BtS. So any suggestion would be appreciated. :goodjob:

Your processor is the only thing really lacking. 2GB of RAM, while not enough to large games, should work fine, and I know a 4670 would work more than well, since my laptops 4670M handles civ 4 on max just fine.

Is there a proper name for processes inside a process?

Do you mean threads? Threads are still part of a process, but run concurrently. Actual processes within processes do not occur very often. I can only think of virtual machines as example.

Yes, maybe threads

I have my external HDD pretty close to my speaker sub-woofer, and I've heard that the magnet in the woofer messes with the HDD. So if there was a problem, what would I notice? Just some corrupted files? So far I haven't noticed anything wrong, but I've moved the HDD away anyways.

*I know it is not a computer*
I have a Magnavox DVD-VHS Recorder Combo MVR 20V6 and it says that it can record on DVD+R and DVD+RW. I used it to record to DVD+Rs before but I just picked up a spindle of Memorex DVD+RWs and I am getting a "Cannot record on this disk error". Is there something that I need to do to the disk or something?

I know that two of the major processors for PCs are Intel and AMD. Isn't there a third one? Or am I confusing things again? Or did there use to be one but not anymore?

I might be thinking PowerPC, but if I recall correctly that's for Macs?

You may be thinking of VIA processors which are generally x86 capable.

VIA actually bought Cyrix in the late 90's and one of the last processors with the Cyrix branding was released in 2000 -- Cyrix 3.

VIA sounds familiar, probably probably what I was thinking of, thansk both.

In Winamp, I have several songs of different volumes, is there a program/method/etc that will automatically adjust it if it's too quiet or loud? It's a pain having to adjust all the time. I googled and got some stuff on microphones and Macintoshes.

thanks both

Weird school computer issue:

They have an old version of VLC, and I popped one of my Petty DVDs in. And it plays fine in my computer but on the school computers, the video showed up as 256 colors with magenta/cyan/that other color lines all over the place where the colors change.

Windows Media Player told me it didn't have appropiate decoders.

I tried googling and got a few X-rated sites.

Any suggestions? (The only thing I can think of is to carry a modern version of VLC Portable on a USB stick, how well would that function on a USB 1.0 if the video is coming from the CD drive?)

For a new laptop hardwired installation of Windows Vista, do I need to choose 32-bit or 64-bit version once and for all? (the same way I chose the language)
Quick reply is needed :)
If yes, which would you recommend?
