Condensed tips for beginners?

This means there are several points in the game where binary research is useful.

1. Start mass build of Libraries
2. Start mass build of Oberservatories
3. Start mass build of Universities
4. Start build of Oxford
5. Start mass build of Laboratories

As soon as these points approach, put slider to 0%, AFTER they are built ,put slider to 100% until you drop back.

the main effect with binary researchis when you research the same techs than the AIs do.
Because you start to tech when some already have it, you get a discount.
If you go for a lower %, you only get the discount on the remaining turns.

Let's make an example :
you're trying to get writing. you could run 60% science and it would take 10 turns.
3 AIs are researching it too, and only need 4 turns.
you get a discount for the last 6 turns (it's 3% per AI if I remember well, making this a +9% discount. Don't sue me if it's wrong, it's documented somewhere).
If you run binary science, you go for 0% for 4 turns, when run 100% for 6 turns. And there you get a 9% discount for the whole time :king:

Greets all. Old Civ player but (relatively) new to these forums.

I was reading through one of Ignorant Teacher's missives on playing at the immortal level and I have a question. Is there a listing of commonly used acronyms for these forums? Much of that thread was incomprehensible simply because I could not figure out what the acronyms meant. I could figure out some of them based on context (BW = bronze working) but for the most part I had no idea what I was reading. Certainly this made the post faster to type but they also made them nigh illegible to those of us new to the forums.

Much obliged for any help someone can lend.

The civfanatics War Academy is a great source of information for pretty much everything. Although some articles might be a bit out dated what with new versions (BtS = Beyond the Sword:)) and new patches changing some things around.

One thing that hasn't changed is this list of Commonly Used Acronyms.

That list seems to miss some more obscure but widely used acronyms such as

WHEOOHRN: "We have enough on our hands right now" - Diplomacy retort (for declaring wars / embargos) from Civs that are currently preparing for or fighting a war.

WFYABTA: "We fear you are becoming too advanced" - Diplomacy retort (for tech trading) from Civs that have exceeded the amount of techs they are willing to trade to Civs below Friendly attitude. Used also when referring this limit in general.

Sorry about that. I'll try to avoid using too many acronyms. :D

Guys help! my game view went into the satellite mode. So the camera is like viewing from directly above (not only the "outer space" viewing angle", also the zoom)

as opposed to the normal civ4 (BTS) camera view that's at a 45 degree angle , how do I change this back. I misclicked something and it into the satellite mode if you're wondering why I got there in the first place.

I have seen this before but can't for the life of me remember how to tell what a trade mission will yield before my merchant actually arrives at the city. Also, there is something about one of the wonders that makes the city that built it a more desirable target for a trade mission. Thanks in advance for the help.

Ok, new bit of advice needed. I have seen several places in the forums that you want to have your BPT at 100 to 200 by 1AD. I started a Noble level game with Netherlands and have whipped, chopped, and cottaged my butt off and still could not break 50 BPT by 1AD. All the whipping kept my cities small and though they regrew fast (great food on the map) the unhappiness kept me from doing more. Chopping was alright and I had plenty of cottages but with the small cities I rarely had anything more than my food being worked. How can you possibly make slavery worthwhile if it keeps your cities small and unproductive? If I can figure out how to post a save game I will but I have never done that before.

Whip less. Work a lot more cottages. You have 7 cities and 8 total cottages. Could be more like 25 at this point. Whipping stuff isn't useful by itself unless it serves a clear purpose.

While the GM is active, Shift+right-click on the target city, then hover the mouse over the trade mission icon. This works even if the city is overseas. Press ESC to cancel the potential move order. Rinse and repeat for other cities.

The city with the Temple of Artemis almost always yields the biggest trade mission payout, even after the T of A is obsolete. Especially if it's on another continent.

Silu: I rather got the impression that folks whipped a lot through the early turns. What would be a clear purpose for you? I was whipping to keep my buildings, settlers, and the occasional worker cranking out fast. Thanks for the reply by the way. :)

Whipping always has a price, so the item you're whipping should be immediately useful; no use in whipping workers if your cities aren't big enough to work more improvements, or whipping a library in a totally production-oriented city, for example. IIRC you also have pretty good production in most of your cities, which provides an alternative to whipping. At least never whip away dudes working tiles like Copper or Iron.

Paul, you do not use an GP farm for Scientist which means you do not have Great Scientists (for Academies ).
You hav had only a great spy and built scotland yard so far.
Consider the GP farm at a place with lot of surplus food available an use the first 2 GS for Academies, one at you GP farm, one at you capital. If you do no longer intend to whip, change to caste system which will enable you to run a lot mor scientists in you GP farm.
