Conspiracy Theories

Any including the sentence "the government (or some other shady organisation) did x and hides y and z".

Really, the government seems to be adept at hiding things, but, as it appears, at absolutely nothing else. And if the world is ruled by some organisation, then they're really bad at this whole "rule the world" business. I wonder if they need some help.

Honestly, Governments are pretty lousy at that too. They cover things up for a decade or four, maybe a hundred if they're lucky, but it comes out eventually.

Other stuff, there's less paper trail and it's just lost forever.

I am assuming by "a hundred" that you'd shifted to years and not decades, because frankly if the government can keep something secret for 1,000 years, that's frelling impressive as hell.

Well, I did.

But you know...sometimes they pull well more than a thousand years off...and it still comes out in the end.

Well, I like the anti-Stratfordian conspiracy theory, for a couple of reasons aside from the fact that I like Shakespeare.

First, it first got proposed centuries after the fact. That's some conspiracy: not one mention of it at the time; 200+ years later we start to get wind of it.

Second, one of the first guys to propose it was named Looney!

I have an aversion to such theories, but that doesn't mean some of them can't be true or nearly true, or true to an important degree. I mean it's not like the average person will ever get to 'know' for a fact what goes on in the moon, so if one claims the moon is a base for aliens, then any reaction is largely going to be on a 'i don't believe conspiracy theories' basis. Which is obviously not a scientific basis either, cause belief is not scientific (at least not belief as a core-point of an argument or position; belief-related mental functions ultimately enable us to view as 'correct' something we have logical reason to view as correct).

I'd say keeping things covered up for a decade or two is pretty decent, because by then no one save for some civil libertarian rotter will care.

Interestingly, the files that were supposed to be made public, about Kennedy's assassination, after 35 years had elapsed... the secrecy around those was extended until basically everyone involved is dead.

Actually, a government lasting for a thousand years is far more exciting than one managing to hide something for that much.

I find it interesting when believers in a conspiracy theory complain of the unlikely circumstances of an official story, but then believe in their own (often far more unlikely) set of circumstances.

JFK being shot accidently by the secret service requires the belief an agent fell and fired a shot that unlikely hit JFK. For this to be possible with the evidence, one of Oswald's bullets had to have grazed JFK after hitting the curb. So even when Oswald "missed" he still hit him. It's like JFK had a bullet magnet on him attracting all bullets in the area.

THE CIA HAS BULLET MAGNETs AND USES THEm TO MAKE ASSASSINATIONS LOOK LIKE ACCIDENTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

^Well, the video of the JFK execution (cause that is what it was; half his head isn't there after the final shot) does not make it very likely it was just a very bad yet chance effect. A bit like it is not very likely half the western world had the tv turned on following news of 'a plane accidentally crushing into the WTC' only to see LIVE the second plane hit the buildings.
Some things are a minor bit too choreographed.
And while this obviously does not mean every conspiracy theory stands to any reason, some of the events which breed such theories are inherently infested with corpses of bad answers spawning the parasitic ever-returning questions about what originally happened ;)

No. His troubles just picked a damned inconvenient time to manifest.

What is the most interesting and/or unlikely conspiracy theory that you have heard from somebody, either in RL or on the internet?

Eat the right foods for your blood type!

7 million books sold, so it can't be wrong. :crazyeye:

I stand amazed that someone became rich off this.
Even now, nobody really knows why we have different blood types.

How about: The Moon Landing was a Hoax!

Seriously? Some people actually believe that? That is even dumber than the faked moon landing people.

Oops. Somebody got that already.
