COTM 17 - Pre-game Discussion

Depending upon the other civs in the game, I will either start Granary,Worker,Settler or Warrior,Worker,Granary. Really hoping that is ocean so I can start the Lighthouse early. Hoping to not research much after Republic and Map Making while I concentrate on war (conquest). Use 1st city as settler factory, 2d/4th&up as military 'factories', 3d as Lighthouse.

@Jove -- it was well before MA; it was the first barb camp to appear near to me! Their first warrior took out my entire town's defenses, and I had similar rng luck the rest of the game.

@Redbeard -- I am tempted not to try Kuningas' strat not because i think I can beat his time, but more so that I do not embarass myself. I think he had a lot of other good things on that map, but I also believe he's an all around better player than myself as well.

@A'Abarach -- you must really be lovin those barbs to try Granary,Worker,Settler. I'm more for warrior, worker, granary myself and even then i'm fearful.

@Pindicator: Ouch! That had to hurt! I'm tempted to build 2 warriors first anyway, one for MP, one to explore, (plus to make us look more bad to the AI) then a settler if there's food around, granary otherwise. Conservative maybe, but I'm scared of early barbs too... I'll try to pop goody huts by settling near them if I can, to avoid the angry warriors. Does this work, or can you still get warriors by settling by a goody hut?

@A'Abarahwhateveritis

You were the 100th post on this thread!!
This has been a really long discussion. I can't wait for the saves to be available!! It's seems so long because Karasu started this thread so early

Civ golden rule: Ruthlessly attack opponents, and they won't attack you.

Oh yes you can!
Happens all the time to me. Funny, when I tried random starts for the test game for this one I always got a hut in a city radius, and always with angry warriors in it! Hope it won't be the case for the game.

The game is now open, the saves are available to play.

Please DO NOT POST here once you have downloaded and opened your chosen save.

It certainly gets one started quicker and barbs aren't so bad as long as that 2d city goes warrior for at least 3 of them. Last game I lost 1 pop in my 3d city and some gold on 2 occasions. Advantages are quicker expansion if you put your first 2-3 cities at distance 3-4, but you miss nearby goodies for at least your 2d and probably 3d cities.

Those are some conquest bonuses--150 + extra warrior + alphabet + cheap gallics!

Same here of course, Kuningas is a far better player than me also. I only said it to pass the time untill the release of the COTM.

However I will be taking a rather military approach to this one, not only because I think it's better but also to practise my military skills and it should be fun with the GW's. And I agree on your remarks on the barbs, I will probably build 3 warriors first.

The game is out, so best of luck to all and we'll see eachother in the spoilerthreads. :king:

If you have no military at all, no barbs will come out of huts. Doesn't apply to normal barbs though...

Predator class equalisers
- Your people have been cursed by Amaethon. You have lost knowledge of Pottery
- AI cost factor increased to Demigod
- AI trade factor increased to Demigod
So how on Earth am i going to get the slingshot with the Demigod cost factor? And taking away pottery is also quite bad. I've never played open except for my first game, but maybe this time i will.

You should probably do what Markus5 did in a test game. He was giong for Slingshot so did Alpha, Writing, and then by accident he chose philo. So he chose lit to be his free tech and the got Glib. He saved money and upgraded and built Gallics and began assaulting other civs. Best of luck if you try predator! :goodjob: If you do open my advice doesn't apply. I always play open but those conquest bonuses look pretty tempting. :mischief:

Whatever strategy i choose i won't build the GLib - it is totally useless ;) But maybe it is not so hopeless to go for the slingshot on predator - i know it is usually not possible on DG, but the AI also get a free settler at DG level, it is not just the cost factor that matters. The best would be to try a test game and see, but i'm too lazy for that. I still have to finish COTM16 today.

In Conquest class this will play like Regent. Extra gold, extra tech, cheap Gallic Swordsmen... It's really too bad Conquest class can't win trophies, as it would be very fun to play Conquest this round.

Fun as in easy.

Anyway, I'm going to burden myself with trying this game. It's been a long time since I played a XOTM to completion and submitted - COTM 1, IIRC, was the last one.

When can we have a Regent game? We have had a few in the past and even a warlord game (felt like monarch though).

I was just wondering if there would ever be a Sid  gotm.
I wonder how many could win it? ;)

Moderator Action: Further posts discussing a Sid COTM are off-topic for this thread have been split out into a separate thread here

Oh, this will be the first COTM i try.

But how do they check people arent cheating? There is no REAL checking is there :(

Junsui: Welcome to XOTM

The main thing that seems to raise a red flag is numerous reloads. Try to play for at least a full hour before finishing that session. There is no penalty for saving often (and I suggest it in case of a crash), but if there are too many reloads or the period between reloads is brief, you'll probably be asked why. I'd also suggest keeping a couple of intermediate saves (like 1000 BC, 1 AD, 1000 AD, etc) in case Big Brother has any questions.

How could you detect how often a savegame is realoaded?
For example someone loads the same turn over and over until he gets the desired battle results...
If i load a savegame it doesnt contain any information how long i played it after loading if i keep loading the same savegame over and over?

... and then does it for the next battle ... and for the next battle. One battle seldom turns a bad game into a winner.

But if someone could turn in great results by undetected cheatling, who would they be kidding, and what would they achieve? There are no prizes here, just bragging rights. Which player wants to be able to brag about being the biggest, baddest cheat in the GOTM?
