Like seemingly everyone else, my game crashes right after I select which DirectX version to run the game under. I've:

1. disabled the intro movie
2. tried running it in full-screen and in not full-screen
3. updated my video drivers
4. updated DirectX
5. run the C++ updater
6. rebooted

Any ideas? Otherwise, guess I'm not playing Civ5 and it goes back to the store. Now I remember why I don't bother with PC games anymore...

System infos please, and please also take a look at this thread.

Vista SP 2, Intel graphics drivers. What else do you need?

I've already done everything suggested on that thread, which is why I don't understand why I can't get it to go.

I've also tried running it as Admin and in XP SP2 compatability mode, and every permutation thereof.

Since it hasn't been mentioned, did you try uninstalling/reinstalling (through Steam)?

Try running the file verify checker in steam

go to the library
right click on civ V and go to properties
go to Local Files on the top
click on Verify Integrity of Game Cache

I've had to re download 2 unvalidated files so far myself

Well, I didn't think this would work, since I bought a physical copy, but I tried it anyways because I'm desperate. I've run it several times now, and it keeps saying "1 file messed up, will be reaquired." But then when I run the game, same result: nothing happens. Does it take awhile to reaquire the file?

Yeah there is a good chance its because of using an intel "graphics" card. I say "graphics" because Intel is several years (at LEAST) behind NVIDIA and ATI. YOu might need to get a new graphics card (which will only cost $100-200 depending on which one you want for a good card).

The only thing that buying the physical copy does is save you the initial 3GB download. After that there is no difference to buying it directly from steam and you can (if you wish) throw those discs away.

I now keep getting my verifier telling me it needs to keep downloading a 22.1mb file. My game is running fine i was contributing that to the fact that i ran this and it did this once and stopped my crashing. But now it does it every time i run the file checker.

I mean w/e it's running ok, but i can't help but wonder if something is wrong with the down loader itself and it is what is causing other people to have issues.

Getting the same thing on mine: I keep validating and re-downloading in an endless cycle. Looks like the same in the 2k forum: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1487271
