Crashing

So i just got Civ V in the mail yesterday and after it took me 8.5 hours to download the new patches off of steam, the game (dx9) crashes during the first intro video. My laptop is pretty powerful and it meets all the minimum requirements and some of the recommended ones. Direct x11 doesn't even launch long enough to elicit a crash message.

You might want to try the sister forum for tech support. The people who browse that forum may be more able and willing to help. :)

However, it might depend on the kind of crash. If the game gives up and you get a Windows error message but your PC is still usable after that, power off your machine completely to force defrag of your RAM, power it up again and see if it still happens - and if it does still happen it's often a minimum spec thing. If on the other hand the PC gives up entirely and you get a black screen and auto-switch-off, it's overheating and you'll need to force cool the underside of your laptop with a desk fan! (That's what I have to do!)

If you don't score 500 or higher, you probably cannot run Civ V no matter what you do.
I wouldn't take too much notice of this! My score is 271 and I run Civ just fine. :) I just set my video options as follows: Min, Low, Low, Low, Low, Low, Low, Medium, High (on the right hand of the video options screen). Unfortunately you have to be past the opening video to change these options!

Two things you further things can do:
  • Switch off the opening movie. Find your top-level text file called UserSettings.ini and change the line that says "SkipIntroVideo = 0" to "SkipIntroVideo = 1".
  • If you can get past the opening video, get into the video options screen, try my settings above, switch off anti-aliasing but also try NOT running it full screen by unchecking the tick-blob. Next time you load it up, it'll run in a frame. The panning is different to full-screen but at least it works. I ran it like that because of crashing until the latest patch fixed it.

Thanks for the advice

I ran the Bench thing and got in the 280s.

To clarify... the program just quits, i can still use the computer fine.

I got crashes too, but it all worked out fine after I DL new drivers. (Edit: graphic drivers that is).

And yeah, I got 296 on that test and I can play it just fine.

As was suggested above ...

I ran this program and scored 417 and I can run Civ V. I get all the problems everyone else is having, crashes, freezes, etc, but I can run the game fine on high settings up until turn 250+ when the bugs rear their ugly heads.
