Polling stations across Croatia opened early, at 5 a.m. local time, and will close at 5 p.m. with initial results expected an hour later.

Surveys indicate that some 60 percent of Croatians back entry into the European Union. A "yes" vote would pave the way for the former Yugoslav republic to formally join the bloc in 2013 if its accession is approved by all 27 current EU members.

Is now the right time to expand the Union?

Welcome Croatians.:goodjob:

Hopefully Macedonia will follow soon.:)

Croatia has gone a long way, it deserves to be a member of the EU.

Plus, it will mean less hassle when I go there on holiday again ;) The Adriatic coast is beautiful, full of nicely preserved medieval towns, and fairly rich thanks to tourism; it's the other part of the country that's a bit of a problem. In any case, Croatia is a relatively small country in terms of population, it won't be hard to swallow.

(Also, the Slavic element is gaining strength in Europe  )

Seems so in Croatia. It's part of that bit of the Balkans looking towards the EU as their solution to most things, and they have very little in the form of alternative planning.

Sure they can join. Retired German people already make up a sizeable contingent along the Croatian Adriatic coast. The Eurozone is a different kettle of fish.

this has been built up for quite some time in croatia. in zagreb, the eu flag has been flying next to the croatian one on government buildings for years.
they really, really made sure to get the population to vote yes.

i consider this to be a formality.

My reaction to that. I'm not pleased because of my nationalist ego, I hope they become a new Greece.

What could you possibly be nationalist about in Bosnia?

"Oh, we only got 75% of our country bombed in the 90's, the other quarter is really nice."

Any nation can become just like Greece, should it like to. Doesn't require EU membership. Becoming like Greece prior to accession might be a bad idea though. The rest of the EU should by now have become unwilling to take in that kind of new members.

I don't like the country very much, but I don't think they deserve that.

Who knows, they may still prove smart enough to reject the EU. Of course they would then be ordered to redo the referendum and make sure they voted the right way, per EU standard procedure... what may yet save them is that the EU itself is on its last legs.

Bigger question is why exactly does Croatia want to join in a time where the whole thing is looking shaky thanks to the debt crisis?

Don't worry, I'm sure the Croat Herzegovina will soon follow ;)

:p

And I'll be singing Marko Perkovic Thompsons songs

Alot, they're less than 15% of the population yet they want 33.333% of the power, and they dont identify themeselves as Catholic Bosnians but as Croatians. Every Catholic in Bosnia had the right to vote on Croatias EU referendum, even though most have never set foot in Croatia. Thats my nationalist problem

Seeing as I was denied entrance to Croatia once and got held up at the boarder a second time while really enjoying my time there, I support this.

This is the reason I support the entrance as well. They have some fine ladies and I can't be stopped.

That's how a proper referendum in the EU should look like.

It's not even a nation, it's three (dead)locked in one arbitrary country. It shouldn't even exist.

O-o, the EU only requires another referendum if the previous answer harms the bloc as a whole. If the Croats decided to shoot themselves in the foot and stay out, nobody would drag them in kicking and screaming.

EU isn't shakier than before this crisis started, and neither have the advantages of membership disappeared just because a bunch of stupid Anglo-American journalists like to portray the European project as a doomed enterprise.

They have some fine ladies and I can't be stopped.

Fake blondes, meh.

Whilst wearing a big badge with a "U" on it I gather?

Why would they identify themselves as Catholic Bosnians when Bosnians are just Serbs who are Muslim?
