Defeatism is in the air. Decade and a half of media brainwashing which resulted in the lets get it over with feeling. Even the most ardent supporters of EU don't have smiles on their faces, and even politicians stopped lying about golden future awaiting and started mumbling something like EU won't do anything for us what we wont do for ourselves, but it will be easier do it in the EU etc etc

We lost. I lived in a free and independent county for two decades. Not something my ancestors could tell. If I ever get children, I'll tell them tales.

Welcome to the club of developed first world nations in Europe knez!

What could you possibly be nationalist about in Bosnia?

"Oh, we only got 75% of our country bombed in the 90's, the other quarter is really nice."

Inverse Nationalism Law: The amount of people in a country who think their country is the greatest country EVAR is directly proportional to the square of how crappy said country is.

By that time I will propably purchase a nice beach house at the coast of Croatia. I guess I will enjoy the story from the time when Germany bought Europe :p

The First Reich was built on religion
The Second Reich was built on diplomacy
The Third Reich was built on war
The Fourth Reich will be built on good fiscal policies and generous stimulus packages

Green: Yes
Red: No

That's good, I was a bit afraid the anti-EU sentiment could have been more localized. Fortunately it doesn't seem to be the case.

Sovereignty is soooo overrated.

Sovereignty is imaginary.

What is curious, division for and against EU didn't go on the regional lines, but age ones. Geriatry was overwhelmingly for EU, and young people opposed. Basically every single internet pool before the real thing, no difference weather site in question was left, right or dating site, shower overwhelming opposition for EU. Phone pools etc. showed support. I know only one person in my entire generation that wanted to vote yes.

It's just a hunch, but I bet if you compare age in counties and % of support for EU you would get a rather good correlation. Southern counties showed lowest EU support precisely because they have the youngest population.

Yeah, right.

Internet polls are notoriously unreliable, and I see no hard data confirming your allegation that young people overwhelmingly opposed Croatia's membership in the EU. Until you can supply such data, I won't believe a word of what you just said.

The Czech referendum had almost the same result - 77% for, 23% against. Support for the EU was higher among young people, especially those with higher education. I'd be very surprised if it was markedly different in Croatia.

Richard Schwartz who writes a column in my Stockholm morning paper and lives in Croatia (husband of Slavenka Drakulic) went off on an argument over this this morning, how it possibly indicates the young generation all over central and eastern Europe are turning their backs on democracy as a principle. He's a bit of an old curmudegeon though. Any risk he might be right?:scan:

Well yay for them.

Ya right, the Croatian National TV invited none other than David Icke a day before the referendum. It must be a conspiracy! (I hope the joke is understood).

A truely sad day for Croatia. Seriously did they add something to the water on election day? Who wants to be in the PIIGS club?
Every country decides on its own if it becomes one of the PIIGS. The current ones certainly did so without the EU.
