crowded unhappiness

I've been playing Civ4 for a while and wasn't quite sure about this. Is unhappiness due to crowdedness only made better with things that cause happiness or is there someway to uncrowd a place without lowering hte population?

Crowded Unhappiness is always equal to the population of the city. You need to compensate for it by building structures and getting resources that boost hapiness. Or you can slave whip, to lower your population.

Once you get the 'drama' tech, build a theater and adjust culture rate up. Every 10% culture gives one happy face.

Also one of the civics will give you a happy face for every militatry unit stationed there. Its good if you have a cities on floodplains/next to a river that will grow quickly.
