Crusader Kings 2

Oh, I thought you could just ignore it or claim it isn't real and it would go away.

I present to you, the power of having lord mayors and doges instead of counts and dukes:

I'm no longer just the king of Portugal, I shall rule over all Spain!

They complained about tyranny, I gave them tyranny.

Why can't I hold all these titles?

There, a whole new batch of vassals, hopefully these will be loyal, cleanse the land and make me filthy rich.

How my income was before adjusting.

The new lords wisely agree to a 45% flat tax rate.

Those massive relations. It's as if I wasn't revoking and banishing everyone in my realm some months ago.

Even a simple marriage gives me loads of money.

The Pope is making 700 ducats a year.

Some years later, they all forgot about my past tyranny. I'm such a good emperor.

Rest of the world.

1256, and Scotland's capital is in Egypt. Oh, CK2, you so silly.

As a question, the Mongol Horde is only just arriving, and, of course, I have discovered the huge army stacks with no attrition. How is one expected to combat these? My Byzantine Empire can raise 130k IN TOTAL and the attrition is... horrifying.

The best advice for this, really, is...

Prepare your anus.

If you want to resort to gamey tactics, I've heard that assassinating their leaders work... if you have the money.

You might also try marriages before they rampage you down. It would probably save you some time.

How did you fend off the Muslims as a duke?

Opportunity wars, the Jimena stayed amicable among themselves and united against the moors, so there were fierce wars and when the moors got busy, I jumped in, assaulted the provinces I wanted and some more for quickly 100% WS and got the whole thing over, all this while the rest were still fighting each other out around Toledo. That and you really have to take advantage of revolting muslim counts, I got several counties like that, by occupying them before they liege put down the revolts.

That and a lot of saving for mercs - other than churches, everyone had their taxes maxed and I wasn't spending money on fabricating claims or buildings till I had Andalusia secure.

I don't even.

(In other news, the Ilkhanate went from holding 4 provinces to over 30 within a decade. I don't like the sounds of this.)

I did try the marriage idea, though! Hopefully that will discourage them from declaring war.

... Until the Golden Horde arrives.

Yeah, well, the game can be "a bit" random from time to time.

In one of my Ireland games, the Golden Horde conquered all of Scandinavia. And England. Yeah, well, and when the 25k horse archer doomstacks arrived, I had to quit as well.

Well, that was splendid. The Ilkhanate just decimated my empire with a 125k stack of Horse Archers.

I think I'll take a break for a while...

Yup, even if you spend centuries planning for it, this is game over if you happen to be anywhere near Russia or Persia.

There's NO way to combat it?

I successfully quelled the Golden Horde (somehow) because they were occupied with Poland and I married off my daughters to their Khagan families, but the Ilkhanate were just... Terrible. I tried to goad them into attacking an army on mountains, and then flank-spamming them with everything I had, and I only killed about 10k of them because of their huge number advantages.

No attrition is OP. >.>
