Crusader Kings 2

The DLC looks awesome! I just hope that they will pay at least some attention to the history in the 800s and later and not add "filler".

On the Republics, it looks like there probably won't be that many to begin with in the new start date - Venice is definitely in, as you can see it in one screenshot (though historically wasn't it still nominally under Byzantine control?), though others such as Amalfi would be nice.

I've spent 120 hours playing a couple different characters in Poland and Ireland. Nothing gets more pathetic than that.

One time I had the HRE take Flanders, then the Duke of Flanders, who had a claim on France, had his claim pushed by the Kaiser. France broke off in the next civil war, but then the Kaiser got a claim on France and pushed it later. Then after he died, I think his son broke off, along with a good portion of the Empire.

All this while, I was freaking Cumania, just happily raiding the pants off of Russians.

I haven't even bothered with claims yet, though I may have too soon. I nabbed Scotland through the election system they have set up, but apparently the scots don't like my heir, so he's not going to get the kingdom when my Queen dies. And considering she's like 60, I doubt she'll reign long enough to change it to a more acceptable inheritance system.

Britannia will have to wait!

In the meantime, my King was a title-whore before I decided to give it up for the sake of relations:

I should also note that I never make it very far. Once I form a kingdom and get kinda big, I get bored and start a new game.

I tend to start games only in Ireland, Italy, or the Byzantine Empire. I have finished a couple of Italian games when I did really late starts. But... yeah.

Word of God says they will be nerfing Republics in the next patch. When the next patch will be (before TOG or with it), how exactly they will be nerfed, and whether it will actually function as intended, all remain open to speculation.

Thought I would share some screenshots from my first game with The Republic DLC. I started as one of the patrician families of Pisa. I lost the doge title on the first election and was left landless. After saving up some money I hired some mercenaries and captured Trapani in Sicily from the local Muslim rulers. Then when the pope declared a crusade for Sicily, I threw all my money at it in hopes of securing some land. I managed to win the title, and split off to form my own Republic of Sicily. After a succesful crusade for Andalusia, crushing Pisa and Genoa, and conquering large parts of North Africa, here is where I stand, The Most Serene Republic of Sicily, Andalusia, Africa, Genoa, and Pisa. There might be another kingdom level title in there, but I can't remember if I've forgotten any. I'm considering taking on the Papal States so as to connect my southern Italian lands with the ones in the north.

The de Normandie family managed to take over the crown of France, hence the union of England and France. They also seem to have taken an expedition to Finland, conquering large areas there. Ilkhanate as just shown up, and the Seljuks have managed to push into Asia Minor. I've also become obscenely wealthy, with monthly revenue of approximately 140 gold/month.

That is what the trade screen currently looks like. My family basically controls all of Sicily's trade posts, as a result of never losing control of the Republic of Sicily and being able to afford to build a trade post right away in all newly conquered territory. Currently working on taking down Venice (and Mallorca, which is a spinoff republic from Pisa) so as to completely control Mediterranean trade.

started a game as duke of youlouse. Bethroted myself to the only daughter of the duke of aquitane. He died 5 years later. Thanks to elective and free investiture, my "quick" son is gonna inherit everything south of paris it seems

lol, for a second there I thought the head of your dynasty was also a sloth.

I should also note that I never make it very far. Once I form a kingdom and get kinda big, I get bored and start a new game.

I usually wait until I'm an empire (in name or in function) and then for my current character to get old or die before I abandon a save. It's far more fun to build your way up than just eat everything in sight.

I tend to start games only in Ireland, Italy, or the Byzantine Empire. I have finished a couple of Italian games when I did really late starts. But... yeah.

The Byzantine Empire seems a bit too boring, stable, and homogenous for my tastes. I tend to start in Italy, the HRE, or Scandinavia.

I concur. And fighting against a similar-sized nation isn't very fun, either, because the war takes so long (or you just blob all your troops into one or two attrition-ridden stacks and abuse your giant navy and their coast).

Easiest way to keep things interesting would be to add some more roleplay options or flavor events. That's why I liked the improve ambition thing that was introduced in 1.08, gave me something to do and wait for - although unfortunately given that my rulers tend to be ubergeniuses (at least early on) it's hard to get that eventually. Unfortunately other than mods, there's no way to get more flavor in vanilla, but I hope the devs will keep adding more flavor stuff in later patches.

I understand that Paradox isn't that kind of company generally, but there isn't a reason they could be.

CK2 is actually my first Paradox game (unless you count M&B) but it seems like to me that the game is barebones so the modders can do whatever they want with it.

And Republics have now been officially nerfed! 1.092 patch is out.

Much harder to end up controlling all the trade posts in a Republic with your family; trade post limit; more limited holy war, seize city, and seize county CBs; breaking truces much more costly and painful; a bunch of bugs patched and minor annoyances tweaked; tutorial updated.

Looking over the full change list, there is only one change that doesn't strike me as 100% a great update.
"Doges can no longer use the Seize Trade Post plot" - I'm not convinced this is necessary, with all the other changes to TPs they made as well. If a Patrician can seize a TP, let a Doge seize one too.
