CTIV-1: The Turtle Game

Um, in the excitement I forgot that I'm going to be away and Civ-less next week (8th-14th)

I should have plenty of time before/after that if the roster worked out for me that way, but maybe I'd be best as an alternate?

I have a way around that: you're up after mjj.

ROSTER:
ChrTh -- Just Finished
mjj55409 -- UP
Dreylin -- On Deck
Ucel -- I think he's out until 1/9

I can have it, but I won't be able to play until late tonight. If Dreylin wants to pick it up, we can swap, and I'll pick it up after him.

Cheers,
Michael

Glad this is sorted so we can get underway again.

Welcome, chriseay and Dreylin. :)

I'm at work at the moment, so wouldn't be able to pick it up until around 6pm MT ... probably best if you keep it mjj, and I'll spend some time familiarising myself with the game and reviewing some of the intermediate saves.

Happy to be in the game! I'll have to take a closer look at the thread and the game now, so I'll be ready to play when it comes to me. I might be back with some more thoughts later if I see anything while I'm looking over what's happened as of yet.

Just reviewed the thread again, and have one concern - the revolution in Hastings which we've been waiting for; was it Indian or Egyptian? Can't find a very good recent picture of the area down there, but is strikes me from current city placement that the majority of the pressure is coming from Hatty's city, and not Karachi.... :(

(Still at work, so can't check for myself)

Of course the founding of Islam there could change the cultural output of the city and it may start fighting back before it revolts again/flips.

I think both are putting pressure on it. IIRC, Hattie's city, while not as in trouble as Hastings, is feeling cultural pressure as well from us (Lahore and Karachi ... so I think Hastings would be more likely to flip to us. We'll see, though.

Pre-turn
I :whipped: the grocer in Madras. Everthing else looks good.

1530AD
Philosophy discovered; start researching Banking. Madras starts building some
catapults. Bombay finishes caravel, starts on Granary. Bangalore finishes forge, starts on grocer.

1535AD
Sailing, sailing, sailing.

1540AD
Elizabeth offers a trade of clams for some of our ivory. Well, no, ma'am; you see, we just cannot. Workers moves to chop some hills around Bangalore. So many flood plains surrounding Delhi, why all the windmills?

1545AD
More sea-based exploration...

1550AD
Banking is discovered; start researching paper. Upon discovering Banking, the people rise up in revolt. Bureaucratic mercantilism is the future! Jaipur finishes theatre, starts on lighthouse. Karachi finishes courthouse, starts on Buddhist temple.

1555AD
Building banks...

1560AD
More exploring.

1565AD
Paper discovered; start researching Divine Right. Bombay finishes granary, starts on theatre. Karachi finishes temple, starts on barracks.

1570AD
And more exploring...

1575AD
The other continent is a very large horseshoe, so one of our caravels has looped around the inside of the horseshoe, thus delaying cicumnavigation. We are close, however.

It's amazing to me how fast we're researching considering we're ahead of everybody in tech. I have a new dictum (maybe somebody it'll be as popular as Sirian's Law) :mischief:

1575AD (Inherited)

OK, taking a long look around before starting....

Image001_crop.JPG

I /think/ this shows that our borders are not yet pressing on Hastings; which

means it was an Egyptian revolt. :(

Wow, this is a pretty nice civilisation you guys have put together for me ... er, I mean us!

:)

1580AD

Start Banks in a couple of places, sail Caravels, and Find stuff to keep our Workers busy.

Notice that since we have Civil Service we can chain Irrigation ... try to find somewhere

this might be useful! Decide to take from Dehli river North to Bangalore.

1585AD

Bombay completes Theatre, begins on Forbidden Palace.

More Workers moving, more ships sailing.

Image002.JPG

Notice fish swimming off West coast ... could it be worth putting a fishing

village on the tip of that peninsula to grab them as an extra health resource?

1590AD

Image003.JPG

Find Eastern shore of Monty & and an Egyptian Caravel!? Has all our sailing been for nought?

1595AD

Image004_crop.JPG

Nope, we steal it out from under Hatty's nose. :)

Liz tries for Open Borders yet again....

Lahore completes Bank, set to Wealth allowing a return to 80% Science.

1600AD

Divine Right studied enabling a move to the next tech column ... I choose Printing Press as we're a cottage Civ
and it will accelerate later techs.

Ling Lun (Great Artist) born in Dehli. Now, we could use him and our stored prophet to trigger a Golden Age,
but maybe he'd be better used to Culture-bomb some poor unsuspecting neighbour. Decided that I'd hold
off on this decision and let the group have input....

1605AD

Workers working, cities building, Caravels exploring ... Oh well, better turn back, I guess....
Image005.JPG

1610AD

Image006.JPG

... but there's a way through after all! :)

Oh, and Monty comes and shouts at us hoping to get 170Gold ... yeah, right!

1615AD

Dehli goes to Wealth allowing another 10% on research (for a small deficit).

Our Workers are running out of useful stuff to do, so I start sending a couple to sleep.

1620AD

Sailing, Working, Building - more of the same.

1625AD

And there you have it.

Still have the Great Artist on hand ... probably want to bomb Ankh-Morpork and steal some territory from Hatty;
or could go in the South to try and bag Hastings - though I feel this is more of a risk.

I'd like to start thinking about a couple more settlers, that fishing village may be a good choice (and maybe we should culture-bomb it). I also would like to get that Island to the East as well if we can.

BTW, we have caravels, but haven't explored our own continent? :crazyeye: Let's get another one built to take a look around.

Got it. I'll play after work today, about 4 pm est.

So my goal is another caravel for exploring our continent, and starting on some settlers. A culture bomb of the possible new fishing village could be good, but do we have any idea how strong the egyptian culture is down there? I don't want to waste a GA.

Let's hold off on the culture bomb for now. I think we might be better off waiting for another GP and going for a Golden Age.

According to Dreylin, we have a prophet stored up somewhere. I can't look at the save, but I think a golden age is a possibility too.

I'll double-check later. If we do, then let's time the GA perfectly. Any thoughts, gang, as to when we should kick it off?

We are close to discovering Education. We can queue up a bunch of universities and then kick off the GA.

I like mjj's plan for using the Golden Age to accellerate Universities, but I'm not sure that letting off the culture bomb in Ankh-Morpork isn't as good a plan. We're already putting pressure on Hatty's city there, and we would probably expand enough to grab the crabs ... another useful Health resource. There are a couple of cities losing food due to unhealthiness, which would expand a bit if we healed them.

The Prophet is in Dehli, as is the Artist ... Prophet was asleep, but I left the Artist awake, so the next person could find him easily! :)

Culture bombs are less effective with large culture cities (at least in the short term) ... while we might grab one or both of the two windmills, I don't think we'd get the crabs for awhile (although I agree it'd be nice).

I also like the idea of a University rush with the GA. Should we put Oxford in Lahore?
