CTIV-2: The Money Game

I really don’t have the time to play these turns but… they shouldn’t take too long. :mischief:

Turn 105 (250 BC)
Methos: IMO Masonry is more important right now than Metal Casting. So I switch research to Masonry to get that stone online sooner. It'll help production more.
Research begun: Masonry

Turn 106 (225 BC)
Guangzhou grows: 3
Methos: I move the worker south to start getting the stone connected.

Turn 107 (200 BC)
Tech learned: Masonry

Turn 108 (175 BC)
Research begun: Metal Casting
Methos: Since Masonry is done I continue on with Metal Casting.
Beijing finishes: Settler

Turn 109 (150 BC)
Beijing begins: Granary
Methos: I decide to go with a granary in Beijing in case we decide to go for the Pyramids. Between being Industrious and having stone we'd be able to complete it very quickly.
Shanghai's borders expand
Shanghai finishes: Galley

Turn 110 (125 BC)
Shanghai begins: Work Boat
Guangzhou grows: 4

Turn 111 (100 BC)
Methos: Guangzhou is big enough to whip now, but I think I'll wait until one turn before growth.

Turn 112 (75 BC)
Methos: The settler is on the southern island as mentioned by afpunk. I do it for both the copper plus I believe the city will extend the borders enough to meet our southern neighbor.
Tech learned: Metal Casting

Turn 113 (50 BC)
Research begun: Alphabet
Nanjing founded
Nanjing begins: Lighthouse
Methos: That sucks! Looks like we'll have to expand culturally in order to meet them. Or hope they do.
Methos: I chose Alphabet as I had hoped we'd be able to trade to the south. It's still possible, just not as soon as I'd hoped.

Turn 114 (25 BC)
Methos: I assign a science specialist in Beijing as we don't have the happiness to allow it to grow another pop point.
Beijing finishes: Granary
Guangzhou grows: 3
Guangzhou finishes: Granary

Turn 115 (0 AD)
Beijing begins: Forge
Guangzhou begins: Library
Nanjing begins: Granary

The workboat will be finished in Shangai next turn. It can be sent south to work the fishes.

Currently Nanjing is working on a lighthouse so it can grow faster. After that we need to get an obelisk up, or some cultural improvement, so we can meet our southern neighbor.

After the worker finishes to road over the stone he should move to the pigs and build a pasture. Build the pasture first so that Shangai can benefit from the tile.

Watch our gold as its currently -2 gpt.

Apparently someone has already built the Pyramids, as we are unable to build it. Oh well, the granary helps in other ways.

BTW, I also checked the 'Avoid Growth' button in Beijing to keep us from accidently growing and getting angry citizens.

Here’s the 1 AD save.

Ok, I got it! I probably won't be able to play it until very late tonight.

It looks like I'm getting a bit of a reputation. Unfortunately, I have earned it.

Situation Assessment: Well, our budding empire has 4 cities, now. Beijing is at max happiness, and Shanghai isn't far behind. We currently have 2 unimproved fish tiles that are being worked. And as Methos has pointed out, we still need a pig pen. Our single copper source is on the southern island, outside of our cultural border.

Production-wise, we currently have a Forge queued up in Beijing. I assume that this is in preparation for a Colossus build. Shanghai is 1 turn away from completing a work boat. Guangzhou has queued up a library which won't be done for some centuries. Nanjing has 2 turns invested into a lighthouse build that is going to take forever until that copper is hooked up.

Our Military is pathetic. We have 3 Warriors for our 4 cities. Currently, Nanjing is undefended. This is probably no big deal, at the moment. I say this as I've never seen barbs land off of a galley. We have some fog in the icy wasteland. If a barb Axeman should spawn up there, this could quickly be game over.

We currently have 6 turns left on the Alphabet research. We currently have 45 gold in the treasury and we are drawing it down at a rate of -2gpt. The research slider is at 90%. Our variant would allow me to take a 4 turn detour to pick up Hunting and Archery. However, if there are barbs in the wastelands, I fear it may be too late to research the required techs and then build the Archers.

Objectives: I would really like to get a settler out for that eastern island. However, I'm pretty nervous about our military situation. I'm thinking the best thing that I can do is to eliminate the fog. After that, I would like to get the Colossus started. Because of the copper being outside our borders, I will have to leave connecting it to the next person.

Turn 0 (1AD): Since the whip was just used in Guangzhou, I have 28 shields of overflow available. Rather than the queued up library, I decide to build a obelisk in 2 turns. The border expansion should take care of the bulk of the fog up north.

Before we will have copper available, Nanjing is going to need a border expansion. I preempt the lighthouse in favor of an obelisk. Unfortunately, it will be 9 turns before the whip is available. Then 1 turn to build the obelisk, then another 10 turns for border expansion. That's 20 turns before we can even think about mining the copper, let alone build an Axeman.

Instead of the forge in Beijing, I opt for a Warrior instead. With a little starvation (-4fpt), he can be trained next turn. Oh, and this will push Alphabet back to 8 turns from 6.

Lastly, I pull the lone Warrior out of Guangzhou and send him north. The citizens there are not too keen on this idea and the city is now at max happiness. But, I've got to push some of that fog back until we get a border expansion in 12 turns.

Of course, all of this if for naught if a single Axeman comes out of that fog. And, 1AD is just too round of a number for Firaxis to not have put something in the code: "Hmmm 1AD, time for the barbarian olympics!". Can you tell that I'm a little worried about barbs?

Turn 1 (25AD): Warrior trained in Beijing. Even with starvation it will take 2 turns to train another one. I return to the forge instead. Shanghai completes its Work Boat. I queue up another one and send this one south.

Oh, and so far, no barbs!

Turn 2 (50AD): Guangzhou builds it obelisk and starts on the queued library. Our worker completes the quarry and heads towards the pigs.

Turn 3 (75AD):

Turn 4 (100AD): The Work Boat arrives at Nanjiing and throws out the fish nets. We'll be able to use that whip in 2 turns, now.

I drop the research slider down to 80% for +1gpt with 36 gold in the treasury. I figure we may need the gold when we settle on the eastern island.

Turn 5 (125AD): Still no barbs...

Turn 6 (150AD): The forge in Beijing is complete and I start the Colossus next. It will be done in 12 turns. That means it will probably be done before the copper is hooked up, which of course cuts the build time in half. :crazyeye:

Meanwhile, Nanjing has grown to pop 2. Now, where did I leave my whip? :whipped: Obelisk due in 1 turn, copper available in 11 turns.

Up in the icy wastelands, our fog busters are finally in place. It will be 6 more turns before Guangzhou has a border expansion. I have growth shut down, as we aleady have 1 angry citizen from the lack of defense and the whip is not available.

Turn 7 (175AD): Nanjing completes the obelisk and returns to the library.

Turn 8 (200AD): Alphabet is learned. Banking in 152 turns. :crazyeye: We have enough gold in the treasury to run negative for about 10-12 turns, if someone is so inclined.

Turn 9 (225AD): Shanghai completes another Work Boat. I queue up a Warrior for Nanjing. Meanwhile, the Work Boat is sent to Guangzhou for that last fishing net.

Turn 10 (AD): The pigs are connected at Shanghai. Note that growth is still turned on to allow use of the whip. But the city is already at max happiness.

The world as we know it:

I just noticed there are more borders:
CTIV-2_250AD_Borders.JPG

The big news is, of course, no barbarians. It looks like I just had a paranoid overreaction. After all of those barbs we had in Meth01, I was absolutely convinced a barb Axeman would step out of that fog. Hopefully I didn't just seriously stunt our future development with all of my detours. Have we even seen a barb yet? They weren't turned off were they? I don't know, maybe that just wasn't enough fog to spawn a barb.
CTIV-2_250AD_IcyFog.JPG

There is a Work Boat pointed towards Guangzhou. The borders will expand in 2 turns. Now that I think about it, you may be able to use the whip faster by emphasizing growth. I wish I would have thought of that sooner.
CTIV-2_250AD_Guangzhou.JPG

The borders at Nanjiing won't expand for another 7 turns. There is a Galley standing by to ferry the Worker down to that island.
CTIV-2_250AD_Nanjing.JPG

Unfortunately, I never got around to starting that settler for Easter Island. The good news, though, is that Colossus will be done in 8 turns. Having the Colossus with this map, wow! And look, a save is attached! :D

Tech learned: Hunting
Guangzhou grows: 7

There is a settler in training at Beijing to go and colonize the horses and sheep to the east. Pick up the settler and a warrior and head on over there.

The worker should stay on the home island as we don't need copper for the Colussus. WE do need another galley to go explore the south and Inca and Spanish holdings. We can get there as the borders are now meeting.

Lack of luxuries is a problem. I don't think we can acquire any from the neighbors for our many fish.

The neighbors know only Hunting, Polytheism and Inca knows Iron Working. With Inca now having Alphabet they should start to mix it up a little in trade.

I got it, will be playing either tonight or tomorrow night.

Some thoughts upon the save:
Why aren't we building Markets?!? It's part of the variant rules! :gripe:

Just Kidding, :D I had forgotten as well. Here are my goals for my turn:
Trade for Iron Working! (I almost wish we had gone for IW instead of Alphabet for our 'off-line' tech) The reason I want to is because we're about to get some good troops--they just need Iron!
See if we can get a couple more workers (need one for Eastern Island)
Start working on Markets.
Get settler to the horsies.

I'm not overly concerned about the lack of troops at this point...as I just mentioned, we're about to have Crossbowmen, Longbowmen, and Knights.

...assuming we have Iron

Turn 0 -- 500 AD

A little MM, everything looks ok.

Turn 1 -- 520 AD

We now have a half a million souls!
Gungzhou is unhappy .. so I whip them.

Not sure what else to really do with the Worker, since I don't want to chop any of the forests because they're providing us some nice hammers ... oh wait, we don't have a road to Guangzhou :crazyeye:

Turn 2 -- 540 AD

Library is finished in Gungzhou, rush Warrior

Turn 3 -- 560 AD

Beijing finishes Settler, starts Market

Guangzhou finishes Warrior, starts Warrior (whipping the population gave me a lot of extra hammers to build warriors to help with the unhappiness that whipping caused in the first place :crazyeye:)

Turn 4 -- 580 AD

Buddhism has spread to our lands (Beijing). I convert.

Guangzhou finishes another Warrior, pauses for Anarchy.

Galley heads East.

Turn 5 -- 600 AD

Guangzhou starts Forge.
Rush Library in Shanghai

Now I'm really not sure what to do with the Worker. I don't want to chop any forests because they're providing us hammers ..now, when we get Guilds, it'll be worth it (replace the forests with workshops, which give +2H with Guilds), but for now, nothing. I decide to keep him ready to send over to Eastern island.

Turn 6 -- 620 AD

Shanghai: Library > Warrior (Happiness)

Turn 7 -- 640 AD

Shanghai: Warrior > Forge
Taoism is Founded somewhere else

Turn 8 -- 660 AD

:coffee:

Turn 9 -- 680 AD

Xian is founded. Start Obelisk.
Guangzhou is unhappy and unhealthy. I rush Forge. That'll teach 'em.

Turn 10 -- 700 AD

Guangzhou finishes Forge, is unhappy and unhealthy, I rush Warrior (might want to turn off population growth for a little while).

Well, my arm is tired from cracking the :whipped:

I would bring the settler over to the island to get that one city improved. A second city should go there (Guangzhou might be best suited for Worker/Settler generation). We can also probably put a passable fishing/mining village on the northeast island.

700AD
Ah, we've grown quite a bit since I last saw us.

IBT

Isabella demands Metal Casting. Uhhh, no.

720AD

Feudalism comes in, and we move on to Machinery. Just 3 more techs until Banking.

I put Guangzhou on a market with intent to whip. It will be a good city to make settlers/workers with, but for as per varient rules and given that every square has at least 3 commerce, the market will be a great addition.

740AD

Our worker sets sail to pasture some sheep and horses.

800AD

The :whipped: comes out in Guangzhou, No more whipping in the poor town for now.

860AD

Isabella wants to trade her Dyes for one of our Fish. Sounds good to me.
I also trade Isabella Monarchy for Archery, Iron Working, and 20 gold, and she is now pleased with us.
Shanghai is built on Iron, while there is also a source on the NE corner of the eastern island, and on the northern most part of our land.

Since there isn't much interesting going on visually, enjoy this assortment of smileys.

 :bounce:  :woohoo:

Turn 165 (1050 AD)
Beijing begins: Aqueduct

Not a lot happened. There's a settler in the galley located over on the eastern island. I wasn't for sure where we wanted the settler so left the galley with movement.

Capac has figured out how to cross the ocean. He has a galley with an archer and a settler west of our southern island.

Three of our cities are Buddhist. I think we should seriously consider trading for Monotheism, declaring our religion, and going with Organized Religion. We might as well benefit from it.

Here's the 1050 AD save.
