CTIV-2: The Money Game

Turn 0 - 1450AD: Beijing has 5 turns left on its Bank construction. I fire one of the three merchants and lower it to 3 turns. Beijing, BTW, is at max happiness and the avoid growth button was previously turned on.

I queue up a Settler in Shanghai. A fishing village on the NW islands will never be a powerful city, but it will at least pay for itself in commerce. I turn on the avoid growth button here in Shanghai, as the city is at max happiness.

The southern city of Nanjing has 7 turns left on the Versailles build. By changing the free specialist from a merchant to a citizen, it drops to 6 turns. Since there is no forge here, a engineer was not an option.

Xian, on Easter Island, has not started construction of its Bank. Here we can train an Islamic Missionary before switching over to troops.

Hatshepsut is willing to sell her map for 20g. Since we've got the cash, I go ahead and buy it. Isabella doesn't like us enough to sell her map, even though she is currently pleased with us. From what I can tell, it looks like we may have already traded with Capac for his map, so I don't even try.

CTIV-2_1450AD_MapTrade.JPG

I seriously overpaid Hattie for that map! :( She doesn't know much about the world at all. It does, however, show me the most direct route out of her territory for our eastern Caravel. Give me time, I can rationalize anything!

CTIV-2_1450AD_EgyptMap.JPG

Well, after all of that, our treasury is down to 202 gold and we are draining it at -14gpt now. I am going to leave research at 90% for the time being.

IBT: Capac gets himself a Great Prophet.

CTIV-2_1460AD_2Million.JPG

Turn 1 - 1460AD: I crack the :whipped: in Beijing. This turned out to not be a smart move. My thinking was that we would lose one of our merchant specialist, but we would get it back when the city grows next turn. I totally forget about the happiness penalty.

Guangzhou is also now at max happiness. It has 7 excess food, and pop rushing the Bank will cost 2 population. I crack the :whipped: here with a little better results.

It occurs to me that since we are running the Mercantilism civic, we are getting no benefit from foreign trade routes. In fact, our open borders with Capac are just giving him free money! I go ahead and cancel that treaty. We lose 2 relations points with him, but he is still friendly with us.

IBT: Hattie wants to do a deal for Calendar making. I decline since it will obsolote the Obelisk. And then who should we find sailing in the Egyptian waters, Julius Caesar, the founder of Confucianism. Unfortunately, he doesn't like us well enough to sell us his map.

CTIV-2_1470AD_MeetCaesar.JPG

Turn 2 - 1470AD: Beijing completes its Bank and begins a Maceman. Guangzhou completes its Bank and begins a Barracks.

IBT: Hattie wants to trade world maps, straight up. Sorry, babe, I've seen your map! Then Caesar wants to buy Paper for half of its true worth. Uh, no!

Turn 3 - 1480AD: Guangzhou is at max happiness and the avoid growth button is on. I use some of the excess food to hire another merchant (max @ 2). This city will generate a GP in 9 turns, with a 75% chance for a merchant and 24% chance for an engineer. A profitable trade mission would allow us to start burning cash at 100% on the research slider.

IBT: Everybody's favorite civ, Genghis khan, is met. Unfortunately, I could not locate his ship. Did one of our Caravels see his ship or did he ever so briefly visit our waters?

CTIV-2_1490AD_MeetKhan.JPG

Turn 4 - 1490AD: Xian trains an Islamic Missionary and starts construction of a Barracks for troop training on Easter Island.

Up in the icy wastelands, Hangzhou is 2 turns away from a border expansion. I preempt his lighthouse build for a Work Boat. I should have done this at the beginning of my set, but I didn't think of it in time.

IBT: Khan comes demanding our world map. I really hate to refuse him, but until we prove the world is round, that map is just too valuable.

CTIV-2_1500AD_KhanDemand.JPG

Turn 5 - 1500AD: Beijing trains our first Maceman and starts on a Cho-Ku-Nu (Crossbowman). The CKN is not as strong as a Maceman (6 vs 8), but it does get 2 first strikes. With the extra force in Beijing, I can let the city grow. The avoid growth button is now turned back off.

The Forge at Chengdu is complete. I change the free specialist from a citizen over to an engineer. Since the city is still only size 2, I have free reign to choose any building. I queue up a library.

IBT: I decline Hattie's offer of an open border treaty.

Turn 6 - 1505AD: Versailles is complete at Nanjing and work resumes on the previously queued Bank. We are now cash flow positive at +3gpt and still running at 90% on the research slider.

Xian completes its Barracks and starts training a Cho-Ko-Nu. It is one turn quicker than a Maceman.

We get a border expansion in the ice city of Hangzhou. I bring out the :whipped: on that Work Boat so we can start fishing.

Turn 7 - 1510AD: Research into Education is complete. Economics is due in 9 turns.

Shanghai completes the NW island Settler and starts training a Maceman. The Barracks in Guangzhou is now ready to start training of a CKN. The Work Boat, built by our slaves at Hangzhou, sets sail for some fishing while Hangzhou resumes construction of its Lighthouse.

Our missionary arrives at Beijing and spreads word of Islam.

IBT: Look who's Galley comes sailing up through the Spanish waters ... Saladin, who is already annoyed at us for trading with his worst enemy. I'm assuming that would be Huayna Capac, but I note that Saladin has previously declared war on both Capac and Isabella.

CTIV-2_1515AD_MeetSaladin.JPG

Evidently, Capac has discovered the joys of a civil service career, as he adopts the Bureaucracy civic.

Turn 8 - 1515AD: Assuming the normal 6 AI on a standard map, we now know all of the players. And, drum roll please, we are in 3rd place. As soon as that Settler plops down, we will probably be in 2nd place.

CTIV-2_1515AD_Scorecard.JPG

IBT: Sal knocks on our door requesting help in his war with the Spanish. Yeah, right!

CTIV-2_1520AD_SaladinHelp.JPG

Turn 9 - 1520AD: Our first Cho-Ko-Nu is trained in Beijing. Training a Maceman is next.

Tianjin is founded in the NW islands on the spot of green dot. It starts constructing an Obelisk so that it can have access to those fish in some 25 turns. Oh, and we are no longer cash flow positive.

CTIV-2_1520AD_Tianjin.JPG

After this Obelisk completes, we can safely trade for Calendar.

Turn 10 - 1525AD: Xian trains a CKN on Easter Island; training of a Maceman starts next since they are both 6 turns.

The minimap show our progress on circumnavigating the globe. As you can see, our two Caravels have just been pushing due east. Since we are so close to sailing around the world, the minimap appears to be centering itself.

CTIV-2_1525AD_MiniMap.JPG

As you can see from the closer shot below, we will complete our journey within the next few turns. Huayna Capac is our only real competition in this race. He had an east bound Caravel that was keeping up with ours for a while. He got sidetracked doing some island exploration, though.

CTIV-2_1525AD_SoClose.JPG

It is possible that we could win this right now by buying Capac's map. He is willing to sell it for 60 gold. Its a gamble that assumes that he has explored the waters west of his islands. Whatever we do though, do NOT sell/trade/give our map until we complete this journey. Doing so would most likely give away the prize at this point.

Here are a couple more shots of the world showing where all of the players are located. Note that I have no idea where the Arabian lands are located.

Does having a map help with the circumnav bonus, or does a ship have to actually traverse the territory? I guess we're about to find out.

Well, I've never actually attempted the trip until now, so I don't really know. According to Sirian in RB1, though, you only have to prove the world is round. By sail or by map, just so east connects to west is my assumption.

It is possible to get the circumnavigation bonus without even having a boat in the water, as I pulled it once totally unexpectedly when I bought maps across the world. In this instance however, since we have crossed more of the space than Huyana, trading maps with him will cost us the goodie.

Got it. Play tomorrow.

Like the progress we are making.

Turn 215 (1525 AD)
Sometimes the AI is smarter than I am. Using a guvnah at Nanjing preserves the build time and puts the tresaury back into the black

Turn 216 (1530 AD)
Zhang Qian (Great Merchant) born in Guangzhou

Turn 217 (1535 AD)
Shanghai finishes: Maceman
Nanjing finishes: Bank

Tianjin gets religion and it is the wrong one. This doesn't help at all.
Judaism has spread: Tianjin

Turn 218 (1540 AD)
Nanjing begins: Courthouse
Beijing finishes: Maceman

Hangzhou begins: Market
Xian's borders expand

Turn 224 (1570 AD)

Shanghai grows: 11
Xian grows: 7
Xian finishes: Caravel
Chengdu finishes: Library

Turn 225 (1575 AD)

Turn 225 (1575 AD)
Chengdu begins: Courthouse
Beijing begins: Harbor
:whipped: another galley out of Guangzhou for ferry duty
Great Merchant lands in Spain and produces 1300g

Second Great Merchant embarks on his caravel and heads for Egypt

Adotpted Free Markets as soon as Economics was in then started the course for Corporation. If Philosophy comes up in trade it may be worth buying it and taking a detour to Liberalism but it is only known to Caesar and he built the Wat but won;t give up the technology.

Diplomatic situation is a little dicey, with Isabella and Saladin at war nad the Capac no willing to open his borders to our merchants, necessitating the long journey to Egypt, though potentially more lucrative.

Gace all the sheilds at home to Beijing so it can finish its harbor and grwo some more. Guangzhou is just so food rich I think using the whip no more than every ten turns is the better option for that town.

Turn 0 -- 1575 AD

I definitely agree that if we can trade for Philosophy and then research Liberalism with our exemption that would be keen.

We stil don't have Calendar? :crazyeye:

Everything else looks good.

Turn 1 -- 1580 AD
Guangzhou: Galley > Theatre (to increase its whippability since we have Dyes)
Xian: Mace > Bank

I use some of the cash to upgrade a couple warriors--I don't like all these annoyed Civs. JC still won't trade Philosophy.

Turn 2 -- 1585 AD

JC adopts Heredity Rule and Serfdom. Still won't trade.

There's an unsettled island with horses and clams SE of Xian. Once we get Astronomy we should settle it.

Turn 3 -- 1590 AD

:coffee:

Turn 4 -- 1595 AD

Beijing: Harbor > Courthouse

JC still won't trade

I had Guangzhou grow for one turn. Back on Avoid Growth.

Turn 5 -- 1600 AD

Nationalism comes in, Constitution due in 10.

Shanghai: Cho-Ko-Nu > Granary

Isabella has completed Notre Dame.

Looks like there's a whole slew of unsettled islands down by Arabia.

Trade mission completed in Thebes. Only 1100 gold (nothing to sneeze at, though)

Turn 6 -- 1605 AD

Nanjing: Umm, something > Forge

Isabella has made peace with Saladin

I get Open Borders from Huyana.

Turn 7 -- 1610 AD

Beijing: Courthouse > Chokonu. I'm also going to allow it to grow one turn.

Genghis Khan adopts Theocracy.

Open Borders appears to be a good choice as Huyana now will trade Philosophy. However, the only tech he doesn't have is Nationalism ... I can get 3 Techs from him for it (Calendar, Music, Philosophy) plus his World Map. It's a gamble, but I really think we need Liberalism to prevent War in the near future. With the trade done, I queue up Liberalism to follow Constitution. Once Liberalism comes in, we should probably revolt to Representation, Free Speech, and Free Religion all at once.

Turn 8 -- 1615 AD
:coffee:

Turn 9 -- 1620 AD
Genghis Khan completes the Hagia Sophia.
Saladin completes the Sistine Chapel. What is this, a Wonder Cascade? :crazyeye:

Turn 10 -- 1625 AD
Beijing: Chokunu > Islamic Missionary (can veto)
Xian: Bank > Granary

Xian, Beijing, and Nanjing each have a Galley hanging out. Caravels are still exploring.

The next Great Merchant we might want to use towards Corporation research, or we can do another trade mission (Genghis Khan would probably give us the most cash for it if we can Open Borders from him). After we get Corporation, if Astronomy is not one of the techs on the path to Industrialization (I think it is, to be honest), we should research that after Corporation (these galleys suck).

I whip the Theatre in Guangzhou. Let it grow one turn, then turn on Avoid Growth. Wait 10 turns to whip again.

Here's the save:

I thought about trading for it on my turn, but decided to hold off since it would obsolete the Obelisk. A couple of our fishing villages needed a border expansion to access their fish. The Obelisk is a real cheap method for a 1 shield city. I wanted to hold off on Calendar until they were all built.

I wasn't criticizing a player's action, I just think it's funny you can have Banking and Economics without a calendar. How is interest calculated? :crazyeye:

Currently on turn 5 but have to stop for a few hours, but I have a question. As expected we gained another great merchant. Conroe suggested using him for Corporation, but I'm not sure that's wise. The great merchant will gain us +1110 beakers towards Corporation, out of 2080 beakers. Without the gain from the GP it would take us six turns to research it. In other words the GP would allow us to shave off three turns.

IMO this isn't worth it, but since I'm at a temporary stopping point (have to run errands) I figured I'd bring it up to the group.

Any opinions or suggestions?

It is pretty much a wash unless you can get the Arab or maybe the Inca to open their borders. Trade missions to Egypt net 1100 and I think the mission to Spain netted 1300. Personally I prefer the cash to the beakers so perhaps a pilgrimage to Mecca. It will take a few turns to get down there and meanwhile we could burn the coin to get Corporation.

We do have open borders with the Incans, and we haven't gone there yet, so that's a possibility. I think Kublai would net us the most cash, but without open borders, it's not feasible.

I like the cash influx better than the beaker influx meself.
