CTIV-2: The Money Game

Got It! I won't be able to play it until tonight, though.

Methos said:
Capac has figured out how to cross the ocean. He has a galley with an archer and a settler west of our southern island.
The only way that I know of for this to happen is if we gave Capac open borders. A Caravel doesn't need open borders, but a Galley sure would. If he is on western side of our territory, he will probably end up putting that Settler down on one of those NW 1-tile islands. If he crosses over to the eastern side of our territory, he will definetly put down on Easter Island.

Alright, I took a look at the save over lunch time.

CTIV-2_1050AD_Izzy.JPG

We do indeed have open borders with both Capac and Izzabella. This will, of course, allow them to explore and settle in our territory. Is this a bad thing? We have already taken the premium land, but there are still some unclaimed resources. For instance, there is an iron hill in the icy wasteland and neither Izzy or Capac have iron.

I'm thinking maybe we should cancel the open borders. This will prevent them from exploring and settling our lands. Of course, it also prevents us from exploring their lands. But since our lone Galley is busy at the moment, I don't see this as a big deal.

Any other thoughts?

There's a settler in the galley located over on the eastern island. I wasn't for sure where we wanted the settler so left the galley with movement.

Gee, thanks! I see what you mean! A lot of tundra and no food resources.

CTIV-2_1050AD_Settler.JPG

I'll probably just put him down 1 tile south of that iron. But, I would welcome some suggestions or ideas.

Cancelling Open Borders is probably not a bad idea.

I agree that the spot 1 tile S of the Iron is the best bet.

Situation Assessment: Well, as previously noted, we have open borders with both Huayna Capac and Isabella. Both are pleased with us at the moment. There is a Spanish Galley, with a Settler on board, off the coast of our southern Island. Our lone Galley, also with a Settler on board, is off the coast of Easter Island. Also off the coast of Easter Island is a lone barb Galley.

Our 5 cities are all engaged in the construction of buildings. Guangzhou, in the icy north, is even constructing a Buddhist Monastery. I'm not sure if this is being done for the +10% research bonus or if we want to start spreading the faith. I'm going to assume it is for the research bonus. On a side note, 26 turns of unhappiness? Somebody must really like cracking that :whipped:. I think I will give the poor souls of Guangzhou a break.

We are currently researching Guilds, to be followed by Banking. It looks like there is 16 turns until we are complete with the Banking beeline.

We currently have a Great Engineer available. Unfortunately, there are no wonders available to rush with him. His free technology is Construction, a 5-turn tech. This is tempting since Construction is not on the Banking or Economics beelines. But, Construction will offer no immediate benefits to us at this time. I think I am just going to sit on him in the hopes that there will be better uses for him later in the game. There will probably be more Great Engineers, though. Each of the 3 mainland cities is running an Engineer specialist.

Objectives: This should be an uneventful turnset. I am going to cancel our open borders treaties. This should have little impact on our relations, as we are all Buddhist here. I also plan on starting a Settler for the next person.

Turn 0 (1050AD): I decide to leave open borders in place for one more turn. I'm curious to know which direction that Spanish Galley would sail. No real strategic value, I know, but I am curious.

I offload the Settler onto Easter Island. The Galley then ski-daddles away.

Turn 1 - 1060AD: The Spanish Galley sailed off and disappeared. I'm not sure how it did that, frankly. It shouldn't have had the movement to disappear back into their borders. Since the Galley is gone, I decide to leave open borders in place for the extra +6 trade route income.

Chengdu is founded 1 tile south of the iron on Easter Island. It immediately begins construction of an Obelisk for the quick border expansion.

CTIV-2_1060AD_Chengdu.JPG

With the Colossus and those 9 coastal tiles, this may turn out to be a pretty good fishing village.

Oh, and I found the Spanish Galley. It made a port call at Shanghai. I cancel open borders with Isabella. She is still pleased. We still have +4 trade route income coming in from the Incan open border treaty. Overall, we have dropped to -8gpt, but we still have 212 gold in the treasury.

IBT: Capac starts a golden age.

Turn 2 - 1070AD: Xian, on Easter Island, gets its first border expansion. The Spanish Galley appears to be stuck on the coastal tile between our borders. Isabella won't get it back until we have a border expansion.

Turn 3 - 1080AD: The ice city of Guangzhou completes its monastery. It begins training a Settler, due in 8 turns.

IBT: The Temple of Solomon is built in a far away land (well, Spain actually).

Turn 4 - 1090AD: Xian completes its Lighthouse. Because it is now size 3, I must build either a Market or a Forge. Frankly, I would rather have had a Library for the cultural border expansions. I choose a Forge since it is only 10 turns and will speed the Market construction.

IBT: Capac comes calling with an offer of Compass and 100 gold for our Feudalism tech. I decline, since it is not even remotely a fair deal.

Turn 5 - 1100AD: We learn all about Guilds and begin studying about Banking for the next 8 turns.

Turn 6 - 1110AD: Beijing completes its Aquaduct and begins work on a Grocer.

IBT: Capac puts 3 Axeman atop a hill that we can see on his island.

CTIV-2_1120AD_CapacAxemen.JPG

Turn 7 - 1120AD: Shanghai completes its Market and also begins work on a Grocer.

Turn 8 - 1130AD:

IBT: Capac's golden age has come to a conclusion.

Turn 9 - 1140AD: I sail our Galley into Incan waters to have a look around. A lot of desert and a size 2 city is what I find.

Turn 10 - 1150AD: :coffee:

The world as we know it:
CTIV-2_1150AD_Update.JPG

As expected, it was an uneventful turnset. There is a Settler in Guangzhou that will complete training next turn. I would recommend one of the spots below.

CTIV-2_1150AD_DotMap.JPG

Pink dot is purely for resource denial. If I've done the math correctly, it will never get above size 7; but it will support 3 specialist at that size.

Yellow dot is on the off chance that we can make a Galley crossing after border expansion. My guess is we won't find anything with a single border expansion. The only thing I see peeking out under the blackness is an impassable iceberg. Which may mean that green dot is the better site, since it has access to the fish after border expansion. With only a single hammer, it is going to take awhile, though.

With these two cities in place (particulary pink dot), I think we can safely leave our borders open. Although, keep in mind that Capac still has open borders with us. Be sure to close them down if he sends in a Galley.

Also note that Shanghai is past the happiness limits. There is a Warrior on GoTo orders from Guangzhou to Shanghai to rectify the situation. I totally failed to notice the growth and respond in time. Sorry about that, folks!

Did someone actually follow the variant rules? :crazyeye:

Nice sets preceding me. Let's see if I can keep the momentum.

Got it. Play it tomorrow.

Turn 175 (1150 AD)
Guangzhou finishes: Settler
Nanjing grows: 6
Chengdu finishes: Obelisk

Turn 176 (1160 AD)
Chengdu begins: Lighthouse
Tech learned: Code of Laws

Trade Currency to Isabella for Code of Laws (courthouses). I tried to get Monotheism from her too so we could change civics to Orgnaized Religion for the building trades boost but no go.

We are hurting for certain because of a lack of market based luxuries. No one has any to spare, other than Isabella's Dyes and we have none at all.

Guangzhou begins: Buddhist Missionary

The monk will visit Shanghai to get a little more culture and some more happy down there.

Tech learned: Banking

Turn 177 (1170 AD)

Setting the course for Economics takes us through Monotheism.

Research begun: Monotheism
Research begun: Theology
Research begun: Paper
Research begun: Education
Research begun: Economics

Turn 178 (1180 AD)
Hangzhou founded

Pink Dot!! The city lacks a defender because I couldn't spare a warrior from the Whipped City quite yet

Hangzhou begins: Obelisk
Xian finishes: Forge

Turn 179 (1190 AD)
Xian begins: Courthouse

Xian is building a courthouse because the economic effect will be faster and more than a marketplace

Turn 180 (1200 AD)
Xian grows: 5

Turn 181 (1210 AD)

Turn 182 (1220 AD)

Here is Kapok's path to the homeland

1220.jpg

Tech learned: Theology
Beijing finishes: Grocer

Turn 183 (1230 AD)
Beijing begins: Galley
Tech learned: Compass

Kapok gets Theology in exhange for Compass and 120g. The harbors will help with the healthiness of all these coastal cities.

Guangzhou finishes: Buddhist Missionary
Buddhism has spread: Xian

Turn 184 (1240 AD)

The lama from Guangzhou heads down to Shanghai

Guangzhou begins: Harbor

Turn 185 (1250 AD)
The galley is sentried to cover Huayana's approach to our shores. There is another galley building at Beijing to provide worker or other ferry service between the islands (both military and commercial necessity in my view)

1250_01.jpg

Huayana knows Optics so we may want to consider a buy for Feudalism. If nothing else we may put a caravel down and discover a new land with new resources.

1250_02.jpg

We can change civics if we wish. Organized Religion will help with all the building of commercial buildings and Caste System might be useful for generating Great Merchants in some of our sheild poor, food rich but potentially unhappy and unhealthy towns.

If we wanted to take a knoweldge detour Drama might be a good choice, there is extra happiness with Theatres and Dyes (from Isabella) and we will also then be able to use the culture allocation in the budget.

Once we get access to Caravels, I think we should also put a high priority on Magellan's Voyage. The extra movement in this game would be nice.

Still here C:\Documents and Settings\Dan\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Saves\SG\CTIV-2 but now here:

Sorry

Turn 0 -- 1250 AD

Man our army is weak.

Feudalism to Hyena for Optics and Literature.

I revolt to Organized Religion for the build bonus. I consider Mercantilism, but since Economics isn't that far away we'll wait for Free Market.

We have a Great Engineer hanging around. Construction is a waste at 5 turns as previously noted; however, what about a Wonder? I wanted us to build Versailles ... and I see that Divine Right can be researched next (it'll be our one digression before Economics).

I think after Paper comes in I'll go for Divine Right, and then plan to build Versailles in Nanking. Who knows, we may even get Islam first :crazyeye: (though I doubt it).

Turn 1 -- 1260 AD

We be Organized.

Turn 2 -- 1270 AD

Nanjing: Market > Harbor (I was thinking Courthouse, but the plan for Versailles renders it mostly moot)

Turn 3 -- 1280 AD

:coffee:

Turn 4 -- 1290 AD

Paper comes in, start Divine Right.

Chengdu finishes Lighthouse, starts Caravel to head East.

I trade Paper to Hyena to get Horseback Riding, Construction, and his World Map. With Construction in, Great Engineer will contribute ~1000 beakers to Engineering. Not worth it in my opinion.

The world according to Hyena:
CTIV-2E.jpg

Turn 5 -- 1300 AD

:coffee:

Turn 6 -- 1310 AD

Shanghai: Grocer > Harbor

Pytheas (Great Merchant) is born in Beijing. Will research Civil Service for us. Even though it's relatively quick, it would require a detour we can't make for several techs (after Divine Right we're stuck on path to Economics). We learn Civil Service.

Ok, this may end up being :smoke: ... but I revolt to Bureaucracy and Mercantilism (since Economics is a good 30 turns away).

Turn 7 -- 1320 AD

We're bureaucratic and mercantilistic.

Turn 8 -- 1330 AD

Wow, we're +14 with Hyena...but I'm still not trading my map.

Turn 9 -- 1340 AD

:coffee:

Turn 10 -- 1350 AD

Xian: Courthouse > Harbor

Ok, Divine Right in 5. Galley should be done in Beijing, bring Archimedes to Nanjing to build Versailles and bring the Worker back up from Nanjing Island.

Once Chengdu finishes its Caravel, kill that stupid Barb Galley before heading East. Head straight East, let's see if we can get the Circumnav bonus (does the territory we see because of the map trade count?)

Here's the save:

1350AD

After looking over everything, I think its safe to say that we've done very well with our rather tough start. It would be nice to get some cities in a better location, but all things considered, things are looking great!

1360AD

Archimedes embarks on a trip to Nanjing.

1370AD

Isabella offers Calender and 50 gold for paper. I don't take it yet, but it is something to keep in mind.

1380AD

Incan Caravel spotted off the shore of Nanjing.

CTIV2Incancaravel.JPG

1390AD

Zzzzzz

1400AD

Divine Right comes in, and Islam is founded In Chengdu. Research begins on education. Furthermore, Versailles is begun in Nanjing, and Archimedes puts 640 hammers into it. 12 Turns left

1410AD

Borders are seen in the east by our exploring caravel.

CTIV2Egyptianborder1.JPG

1420AD

We meet Hatshepsut of the Egyptians. Wow, are we ahead technologically or what? (OK, screenshot didn't take. Take my word for it, there were about a dozen techs for trade on our side, and just Music and Calender on her side).

1430AD-1450AD

Lots of Zzzz, with exploring to the east.

A look at known Egypt:

CTIV2knownEgypt.JPG

Looking ahead:

I have most of our cities on banks right now. Not necessarily because they'd be the best thing for the cities to build, but because I feel its important to follow the varient rules as well as possible.

Our Caravel to the east turned back slightly to scout out another border. I couldn't tell if it was Egypt or not until I got closer, but looking back this was a mistake. We want to get the circumnavigation bonus, so whatever you do, try to maintain him going eastward until someone gets that.

Versailles will finish within the next turn set, and so will education, leading right into economics.

Sometime soon, we need a military. Seriously, if we become a tasty target to any of the new civilizations we find in the fog, we're in big trouble. Our shared religion with Spain and the Incans has allowed this to take a back seat, but coming up on astronomy, it can't wait much longer.

Good luck!

:goodjob: Need to see if we can start spreading Islam about.

Sorry everyone, but I’m going to need a skip. While I’m at it I’ll let you know that I will be gone for the weekend so will be unavailable to play, or even comment, until sometime on Sunday. No computer access at all. I was hoping to be able to play my turns tonight but due to preparing for the weekend I doubt I’ll have the time. Again, my apologies.

Got It. Earliest that I will be able to play it will be sometime tomorrow.

Situation Assessment: Overall, things are looking pretty good. The demographics screen shows that we are in 1st on GNP output and about average in the other categories. We currently have 222 gold in the treasury, and are draining it at -2gpt with a 90% research slider. The research in Education will be complete in 6 turns. We will most likely be the first to discover Economics and get the free Great Merchant.

CTIV-2_1450AD_Ranks.JPG

I was absolutely shocked that the demographics shows us as 4th in soldiers. Our army consists of 12 Warriors and an Axeman. This is probably our single biggest weakness at the moment. Since our variant rules allow me to preempt required builds for military need, I think I will do so.

A fella by the name of Muhammed has spread word of Allah on Easter Island. Since ChrTh indicated he would like to see some spreading of Islam, I shall see about getting a missionary or two going. Don't expect any jihads or anything, but we may be able to get it onto the mainland.

CTIV-2_1450AD_MiniMap.JPG

And then there is the circumnavigation bonus. I was about to note that we are close to completing it. Then I remembered that the minimap has yet to be centered. In reality, I have no idea how close we are to being done.

Objectives: (1) prove the world is round; (2) provide for defense of the realm; (3) spread the word of Allah.
