JOE's comment: Nobody will declare on Kublai. We're on our own.
JOE's comment: Traded and got gold up a bit. Research up to 70% for -13gpt.
JOE's comment: Theatre rushed in Cumae, so start Globe as and when.
JOE's comment: Big SOD near Shangian, but he now has Axe & Sword stationed there.
JOE's comment: Plenty of Cats's for us to suicide him with though.
JOE's comment: Most SOD units have Combat I, some still need upgrading.
JOE's comment: I would have declared next turn.
JOE's comment: Use HA or Chariots to take out Shangian resources I guess.
JOE's comment: GL!

Fact is, we need Iron and we need it fast, despite it being covered in dirt. We can always wash it before we make it into swords. Hence the huge SOD near Shangian. While we're attacking it, it may be work building a Settler to found our own city once we raze it. We probably can't afford the number of turns it would take for the revolt to finish, plus we could have instant access to the just finished mine for instant Iron access.

Monetarily, I traded Drama for a few bits we're missing and some gold so I could put our research back to 70% (it was on 50% for a while). We won't be able to sustain 70% for more than 6 or 7 turns though, as we're -13gpt at the moment. Whilst our huge SOD is attacking, it may be worth building markets.

Last thing, Cumae has just had a Theatre rushed. It should finished next turn. Globe Theatre should also be rushed, as Alex has Drama and will probably attempt to build it himself. We can then let Cumae grow for all it's worth and turn it into a science/gp monster as was suggested previously.

Think that's it. No more Woodsman promotions. :blush:

Globe Theatre is a national wonder, requires 6 theatres to build, so we don't need to worry about Alex. ... or did you mean Great Library?

Are we sure we want to attack Genghis for one city?

I think its a recipe for disaster if we go it alone. As important as iron is, I would wait to war until somebody will go in with us against someone. I will agree if we're going after Shangian it'll never be easier than it is right now, but I think long-term we'll pay for it.

We have war eles now, so I think that buys a little time to come up with some allies. Just my two cents.

I think Liz has built Great Library...I did mean Globe Theatre. I just played an OCC, of course you only need one Theatre in that to build Globe Theatre. Still a little in OCC mode I think. Still, If there's nothing to build for a while, the Theatre will allow for extra expansion without extra unhappiness. We can't really afford much more in the way of military at the moment, so why not...

Are we sure we want to attack Genghis for one city?

If we can get Iron any other way then let's do that. Fact is, we can't expand east and we can't easily expand south. What else is there to do?

I still think we can trade Horses to Genghis for Copper* and build up some Axes and War Elephants to hit Toku. Toku is our ultimate target (especially since he's bound to attack us shortly), why not go for him first?

*Unless of course Alex or someone else (not Toku) can now trade us Copper

We've got Horse Archers...lots of Horse Archers. Genghis doesn't have much in the way of spears, Toku has loads from what I could see, our Horses would get slaughtered.

On the other hand we have a lot of Cat's, so knocking them down to next to dead shouldn't be much of an issue, but where is Toku's Iron supply? Can we grab it quick?

I'm no military mastermind in CIV, so I'm happy to go with the majority, but the forces are sitting on Genghis's doorstep...

Got it.

It sounds like we have enough units to take Shangian and defend ourselves until Khan talks again. I'll have a look at it later, but I'm quite sure war will be declared during my turns. :hammer:

If I read it correctly, the replacement settler is not yet build though.

Shangian has culture, it may not autoraze so we might not need another city ... unless we want to raze it.

BTW, Alex might be more willing to attack Kublai after we've already gone to war with him.

I can't look at the game right now, so just had a look at some screenshots.
It looks as if Shangian is 2 off the dotmap and also would need 2 border expansions to get the iron under control.

Our original dot would also be far off the iron.

I really need to see the game to get a better idea. Will try to steal the civ computer from hubby soon. :)

Edit: I got lucky and there was a football match on, so i got the computer without bribe. While I was looking at it I went ahead and played it right away. The next post will bring you 10 turns of war.

There are no options. Shangian needs to be taken and kept.
I look for our SOD and wow, that's 3 times more than I had in mind. :)
That's definetly enough.

(1)880AD
Rome: WE -> Theatre
Cumae: Theatre -> Market
Declare on Kublai and move towards Shangian.
I also revolt to OR. We need a missionary for Shangian.

(2)900AD
Kublai went for a GA.
He moved 2 axes and a sword on the cows. I suicide one cat and take them out without further losses (odds were not good!).
Now he only has a spear and an archer in Shangian. I move next to it.
Change Rome to Missionary.

IBT: Alex declares on Kublai on his own!

(3)920AD
Bombed defenses to 4% and lose a suicide cat and one HA. Shangian and 142g are ours.
Up science to 80%.

(4)940AD

Rome: Missionary -> Temple

(5)960AD:
Antium: WE -> WE
Spot a settler/archer galley south of Shangian. Switch Neapolis to Galley.
Argh! I misclicked and moved the attack forces to the wrong side. I reload and move to the correct spot.
WE loses to a sword at good odds. :( HA finishes the job.
I get a look at Samarqand. A spear and 3 archers are in there. That should be possible.

(6)980AD
Moving units next to Samarqand.

(7)1000AD
Kublai has a sword there as well now. Ah well, I'll take that city anyway. It has copper close when we raze Turfan.
Bomb defenses down to 11% and send the suicide cats in. All 3 of them survive and 2 even kill their defenders! That good luck I haven't ever had before. I only lose one HA to the spear. We get 42 gold and a new city for that 1 HA. I'd do that again. :)

Toku has Longbows now. :eek:

(8)1010AD:
Rome: Temple -> Missionary
Shangian comes online, whip Granary and it gets Hinduism.

Alex adopts Vasselage and Theocracy.

Move units towards Turfan. It's close to Alex and interferes with Samarqand. It will have to be razed. Alex helps there. He attacked it a few times and reduced the defenders I think.

(9)1020AD
CoL -> Monarchy
Shangian: Granary -> Aqueduct

IBT: lose pillaging HA

(10)1030AD
Rome: Missionary -> Market
Antium WE -> Aqueduct
Samarqand: Granary

Turfan has only an Axe and an Archer. Suicide 2 cats and pocket 116 gold a WE and a HA later. This will hopefully secure the copper!

I make peace with Kublai now. We get 240g for it, but unfortunately no tech.

There is a Missionary on GOTO Samarqand. The units surviving the attack of Turfan are also on GOTO Samarqand. I hadn't realised my 10 turns were already finished when I did that.

I made peace because happiness was getting bad and Toku worried me. He's out of space for new cities and he'll attack then. I'm afraid, we'll be the target. I'd suggest securing the northern borders, building Courhouses and Markets next.

I think it looks better now, but we need to be careful not to fall behind in the tech race. We can trade CoL and maybe should.
It's the only tech we are up and we are down quite a few techs.

Sorry for not taking any screens. I simply forgot.

LONGBOWS?!? :eek: Glad we didn't listen to the idiot who suggested attacking Toku with War Elephants and Axemen :mischief:

That's some good work there :thumbsup:

EDIT: @Hamtastic: Toku's a jerk, we're going to have to fight him at some point anyway. Before Samurais wouldn't be a bad idea, as they're quite unclean :mischief:

Proven quite wrong, I was. Nice turns Sina. Only gripe is Shangian is terrible, could definitely have gotten two cities, one coastal, and got the iron quicker by razing. Short of putting up a half city right on the iron, I think we're quite some way from having it under control. I also might have dialed up the culture slider and pressed the advantage while Alex was involved too.

That said, don't mean to be too critical, definitely pulled off something I didn't have much faith in. So quite nice. :)

I'm definitely not trading CoL at least until we have maces ourselves. The last thing I wanna do is get Toku any closer to Civil Service + Samurai, which is the best UU in the game outside of Praets.

Also, got it. I'll play tonight if I can figure out what I want to do. :lol:

I'm feeling better, so I'll be ready for my next turnset

Pre-turn thoughts: Well I said most of what I thought. I'll focus on getting the rest of the Civ productive and trying to stay out of another war. Major objective is obviously getting metals, but most likely, I can't do a lot to make that happen. Other things of note--Great Engineer due in Rome in 4 turns, same time as Monarchy, not sure which middle age wonder we'll really want, probably Notre Dame or even -gasp- Sistine to help with Culture but its definitely something to think about. Also going to need more workers, as our new possessions suck without them. Cumae a little overwhipped. But it should always be whipped as soon as the unhappies wear off.

I do a slight bit of MM and hit enter.

1040 AD: Colossus BIFAL. We definitely had enough military to take another city from Kublai, hope we don't live to regret that.

1060 AD: Monarchy in, decide on Feudalism next since Longbows will help us be safer sans metal. I'd like to add this is probably will be the first time ever I got Feudalism before CS if it turns out that way. Revolt to HR, we need the happiness. Cumae finishes Market, starts Courthouse. Hinduism makes it to Samarqand.

1070 AD: See this:

rightcall.jpg

Maybe ending the war was the right call. :lol:

1080 AD: Heron born in Rome. Sleep him til theres something for him to rush. Alex is now Friendly with us after the HR switch. Decide to sell Meditation to Toku for all his gold (30) to get a relations boost. We're getting crushed in tech, all the AIs are up 4 on us and we're only up CoL. Perhaps the first person to see CoL fall to one of the AIs not name Lizzie should trade it off to the others.

1100 AD: Nothing, but Toku sends a Hindu missionary through our lands, hoping he'll spread Hindu to Shangian for us.

1110 AD: Rome finishes Market, dial up a Theatre to help with the culture battle. Antium finishes Aqueduct, starts an archer for mp/defense duty. Toku indeed spreads Hinduism to Neapolis for us. Galley finishes there and resumes its Aqueduct. Decide to send the galley north to see what the rest of Japan looks like.

1120 AD: Shangian border pop. Alex sues for peace with the Khan. Keep an eye out on the border over there. Will need to start building more troops soon.

1130 AD: Rome finishes Theatre, starts a Hindu Monastery. Cumae finishes Courthouse, starts a Jumbo.

Just noticed this:

trouble.jpg

Must have just started moving him a couple turns ago, because I was checking for that very thing at the beginning of the turnset. I probably should have gotten a settler built at the beginning, but economy is enough a mess I didn't want to mess with it. Sorry about that.

And that's all she wrote. We're going to need to war again soon, theres just no saving this tech situation without it. I don't think Toku is going to be an option, he's completely throttling us on tech. The other sad part is our best ally is Alex and he's in last place and about to steal land from us.

The situation:

Check that GNP. :sad:
