The Ship was the U.S.S. Essex, captained by David Porter. The war was the War of 1812. After months of preying on British shipping in the Pacific, the Essex was blockaded and subsequently captured in the Chilean port of Valparaiso.

Question 8: Who was the soldier that raised the first U.S. flag over Chapultepec Castle during Battle of Chupltepec, the climactic battle of the Mexican-American War; and what did he subsequently become famous for?

As I recall, General Winfield Scott captured Chapultepec as part of his rapid advance on Mexico City. This all occurred because of the big (largest in the history of the world at the time) amphibious landing at Veracruz, which in turn happened because the US Army did not want to fight in the Deserts of Mexico to get to Mexico City.

This all occurred in 1847 (the Fall, I think) , because the treaty of Guadalupe Hildago was signed in early 1848. BTW, I am from Texas... and we, too, beat the crap out of Mexico when we were a nation. Of course the same arrogant moron led the Mexican forces into defeat in both wars... I'm sure everyone know who that was, LOL!

But the question was: Who was the first soldier to raise U.S. flag upon the ramparts of Chapultepec Castle. ... Needless to say, it was not Winfield Scott, who -- commanding the army -- was not in the midst of battle so that he could raise a flag in battle. Scott's campaign was brilliant; Wellington declared him lost after he cut loose from his base of operations in Puebla; and a certain R.E. Lee gave him a lot options to the get the job done. But the question remains: Which soldier?

And as for the "arrogant moron" ... Santa Anna is a story unto himself.

Waku,

That Aztec Club is a really interesting site. However, it was not Quitman.

As a hint, the Flag in question was originally being carried by Lt. Longstreet, who fell critically wounded; and the lieutenant who took up the flag achieved his fame while serving with Longstreet during the Civil War. (And, for some reason, he apparently was not a member of the Aztec Club.)

Question 9. Lawrence Washington (brother of George) named his plantation after Edward Vernon. In which battle did they fight together?

Another interesting website Waku. If the author is correct in recording his history, then he is right in asserting that de Lezo is overlooked in the English-language histories of naval warfare. (And it somehow seems appropriate that a man lacking an arm, a leg, and an eye should win one of the most decisive engagements of the War of Jenkins's Ear!)

So, I guess my stab into the dark was a correct one. Keeping in the same vein of missing body parts:

Andu, you will find that my good friend Waku is the Master at finding information on the internet.

Now, for the next question:

American Revolutionary soldier, known as the Swamp Fox, Francis Marion was born at Goatfield Plantation in St. John Berkeley Parish in 1732. He was a planter and Native American fighter before joining (1775) William Moultrie's regiment at the start of the American Revolution. In 1779 he fought under Benjamin Lincoln at Savannah and escaped (1780) capture at Charleston by being on sick leave. Marion organized a troop (1780), which, after the American defeat at Camden in the Carolina campaign, constituted the chief colonial force in South Carolina. Engaging in guerrilla warfare, he disrupted the British lines of communication, captured scouting and foraging parties, and intimidated Loyalists. His habit of disappearing into the swamps to elude the British earned him his nickname. When Nathanael Greene had succeeded in ousting the British from North Carolina (see Carolina campaign), his lieutenant, Light-Horse Harry Lee, brought reinforcements to Marion, and they took part together in several battles, notably that at Eutaw Springs (Sept. 8, 1781). After the war, Marion served in the South Carolina senate, where he advocated a lenient policy toward the Loyalists.
