What would be the difference to the current system?

I think what he means is that you wouldn't get the (potential) crisis after 5 turns, but at the next stability check. Which would suck if you get a new technology on the next turn... So I'd say 5 turns is good.

Yup.
Rather than stability check = fail = immediate crisis.
1st stability check = fail = warning. 2nd stability check = fail = crisis.
Might need a bit of refining. But the lack of temporal space to respond is not very fun with the current system.

Okay, I had some time to think about this and imo this is indeed the best solution.

So on your first stability check where you would receive a crisis, you instead get the message that a crisis is imminent. You're then in "imminent crisis mode" which means that for every check that results in a crisis, it actually hits. Imminent crisis mode only wears off when one check doesn't return a crisis. After that you are immune to the first crisis again.

The system doesn't apply to AIs as they don't need the feedback.

It seems like a good solution, but as I said earlier it's going to be quite annoying if you get a DOW (triggering the imminent crisis mode) 1 turn before you get a technology, as it would be effectively the same as it is now. But I'll give it a try before complaining :D

There is a cooldown between stability checks in case a crisis is triggered.

Here we go! As soon as Germany declares war on Russia, the weird Core-only collapse happens. Simply go into world builder and make Germany war Russia, and it'll happen.
Maybe it's because I loaded the save on a different revision (560), but for me this caused a severe economic crisis for Russia without any oddities.

Interesting game by the way, did you help Britain in obtaining their historical colonies in Africa?

I did not, but I gave England a large stack and a settler, which explains their historical expansion into Egypt and the building of Suez.
I actually weakened England every chance I had, because they were ahead of me in building wonders I wanted. This led to their collapse in Australia and most of Africa, but in the collapse they kept Suez, so they just re-expanded.
They lost India because of Congresses.

I'll save the next time the weird collapse happens.

Perfect :goodjob:

The only thing I'd like in addition to that is some sort of indicator in "imminent crisis mode" to show the extent to which your actions are influencing your progress towards stability in the turns before the crisis hits. So an indicator or a pop up which says "your stability is improving" or "your stability is not improving". Is there any way to add that in?

How long is the cooldown?

That would require another stability calculation which I want to avoid for performance.

5 turns if you're above shaky or have only received a warning, ten turns otherwise.

New commit:
- stability screen predicts whether the next check would result in a crisis (stability updated at the beginning of the turn)
- new Phoenician, Persian, Byzantine and Portuguese UPs
- new Mongol UP: The Power of Terror: approaching armies can send enemy cities into unrest
- changed Keshik: now Knight with 3 moves, strength 11 and collateral damage

Beg pardon?

Oh, sure.

Just a quick preview of what I'm currently working on:
