Current (SVN) development discussion thread

After the Roman and barbarian rework I'm seeing stable Rome past AD500 in most of my games and collapsing around AD1000.

I think part of it (correct me if I'm mistaken) is that with the barbarian overhaul some of the huge stability hits were taken away. The Barbarians around the Roman Empire should attack cities and not really care about combat %. My guess is that they are having an interesting time against Legions, which is why I propose less Legions.

I just played a Rome game and changes caused me to get the best UHV score so far. The barbarian stacks waited outside my territory for their entire existance. They were in big groups, but they didn't do anything. It seemed like most of them didn't, as the stack outside France was full of Germanic and Hunnic units, and even a Sumerian Chariot. This may be because I'm working on an SVN that's a week old, but without the stability hits or reliable barbarian AI, there's no reason that Rome shouldn't continue that long.

Regarding Rome - I had a problem with the UHV goals, when running on epic speed - basically they seemed to match the "turn" and not the "year" has anyone else experienced this?

That's mostly just a problem with text. The UHVs happen at the correct date, it's just that the turn text has yet to be changed from what was originally put there by Rhye. The text also is not dependent on what speed you set the game to. As a rough conversion, Epic speed is roughly takes 1.5 times as long as normal to do something, whereas Marathon takes 3 times. The turn numbers are wrong, but the dates are right.

I haven't disabled the stability hits yet, and the barbarian AI in Europe is the same as well. I think it has more to do with Rome's increased productivity. I've scaled that down a bit, as well as their city upkeep modifiers which I intentionally set too low a while ago (that's not committed yet though).

Just some hit&run notes on a SVN downloaded 27/8. When I play Rhye's it's usually the Rand version, so some of this is probably me misunderstanding stuff:

-Playing Prussia, first goal 7 GPs in Berlin; I can't figure out how to get a Berlin.
(Started Dresden, given Hamburg, captured Frankfurt & Mailand, built Klagenfurt.)
-It calls me German. I thought the Germans were the yellow guys I killed.
-I killed a French knight in my turn, completing the Great General bar, but had a message that the GG had been born in a far away land, not one of my cities.
-Inflation starts high.
-A couple of times a cannon moved with the <g> command froze the game.
-I gave the English the French cities I took. I have 3 core cities, 2 contested, 1 foreign core, while they ought to be less stable with three French cities and yet I'm Very Shaky (-17) and they're Stable/Very Stable. I took Amsterdam so I could keep Hamburg - maybe I should have just razed it.

I can only answer a few of those.

In that case, I fear you are out of luck. I believe Dresden is one tile from where Berlin is supposed to be, so you can't found the city and thus can't complete the UHV. You'll have to try a new start. Perhaps start as a different civ, make sure no one is ruining Prussia's start and then take control of them.

-It calls me German. I thought the Germans were the yellow guys I killed.

You both are, kind of. :D The other, yellow, Germans represent the original empire of the old dynasties, especially the austrian Habsburgs. This empire fell apart and left the Habsburg dynasty as rulers of only Austria and Hungary (short story). The second german empire evolved in the 19th century centered around Prussia and without participation from Habsburg: That Germany is you.

I'm pretty sure I've disabled the mechanic that lets you flip cities around your starting spot so that civs like Prussia don't end up in situations where they are without the necessary city. Are you sure you're on the latest revision?

The HRE (yellow guys) should be called Austria as soon as you're in the game. Wasn't that the case?

For the great general, was your bar reset after that happened? If so, I'd be interested in a save to see what was going on.

And for the stability problems a screenshot of the stability advisor could help.

If I install Varietas Delectat to this SVN version (1) will it work and (2) will I be able to keep updating it? Thanks again for all of your guys hard work.

Question. The Thai goal of making Ayutthaya the most populous in the world is totally OK with Angkor instead; why therefore does Babylon have to be Babylon rather than Ashur?

Could this be related to that the spot needs to be okay in case Khmer built a wonder in Angkor?

How do I build a (Native) Slave unit as Congo in newest SVN revision? There is no hint in the Pedia what is required, but I am running FL, have city in Sub-Saharan region. I checked if defeated Native Impi can be converted into Slave unit, but no, this is reserved for Aztecs only.

edit: Oh, I see, I have to actually draft slaves and run Autocracy. When I used WB and gave myself Nationalism era techs I actually drafted a Rifleman.

So :help: please!

P.S. Why do I need to research 12 techs toward Nationalism just to be able to generate Slaves? Drafting from cities 38 (*40=1500+) times by itself is pretty challenging. Why add this second tech goal?

You don't need Nationalism, just a Sub-Saharan city with at least 7 population. Press the button to get a slave.

Well, mouse-over info for Enslave button has to be adjusted then. It says pressing ENSLAVE button requires Autocracy and city with Population 6... Something in Pedia about Population 7 requirement could be added as well, perhaps...

The latest version of Tortiose is being very weird, and just locked the folder for this mod for some reason. Any help?
