DaftNES 2: Throne of Destiny

The Republic of Vengano is only willing to commit to the defence of other Aeonist countries. It reserves the right to stay out of any offensive action.

This is good. Otherwise the Asturian League may have been forced to object. Not that we could do anything... :)

660 - 669 AD

A messy war in north africa took place at this time. Elsewhere, strong alliances were forged, but this only seemed to spark new tensions and rivalries.

The world:

Steam power: In Antalya, Freiland and Pangari, a new generation of steam engines came into being. The latest metalworking methods allowed for higher pressures and ever greater efficiency. Steam-powered travel over land and sea now seems like a more practical idea, but any 'rail-road' would still be an expensive venture. Roads and canals still seem perfectly adequate for travel between major cities. The concept of steam travel still remains unproven...

Asian Alliances: In response to the 'Central Alliance' of Antalya and Rytarria, the United Empire began to negotiate with Videssos and Pangari. Soon the 'Zeyris Triad' was being announced with enthusiasm, supposedly a grand triple alliance to counter any threat to peace in Asia. But this was premature - the Pangari later downplayed their involvement, and only claimed to have a defensive treaty with the UE.

Apocaltypic Oruism: A doomsday cult took hold in the mountains north of Manash in the United Empire, near the border with Rytarria. The cult was founded by a splinter group of Oruists, who began to spread the word that the world was going to end in 697 AD - leaving only a few more years for people's spirits to achieve enlightenment, or else be stuck forever in a void of confusion. By 669 AD, a few thousand people had joined the cult, including Rytarrian soldiers and some former high-ranking bureaucrats from the United Empire...

Gyut Civil War: King Yutagi V of Gyutshian died in 662 AD, having spent his last few years in ill health and a poor state of mind. There were many doubts about which of his many heirs was really intended to replace him. Civil war broke out, and many battles were fought across the country. Some claims were quickly stamped out. But by 669, two rival brothers were in deadlock, with most of the country divided between them. Also, some of the southern Taej cities had rebelled against their masters and formed their own city-states.

In the meantime, Gyut raiders began to venture across the borders, looking for plunder and supplies. While the border guards of Qi Taej and Sung Taej were kept busy enough, the border with Rajarash saw even more fighting. Rajarash's disciplined troops were able to give the Gyut raiders a bloody nose, despite being outnumbered in most cases. It was even rumoured that the Rajarashis were planning to invade Gyut lands to push the border further east...

* Gyutshian is in anarchy for the time being.

Ceinurissian-Vancuissian border dispute: After 660 AD, the Ceinurissians began to expand their colonies west of Humidiss. This raised the question of where the divide between the Aonsaise and Vancuissi should actually be, as it had never been formally agreed upon. By 669 AD the dispute was still a peaceful one. Most of the people of Humidiss still considered themselves simply 'Thuleans' in any case.

The Second Mogui War: The Pangans still aimed to expand their territory in North America, but were once again forced on the defensive. In 662 AD, Vancuissian frontiersmen broke the unofficial cease-fire and continued to push into Pangari territory around the colony of Mogui, burning Pangari settlements along the way. Again, it was not an official war, but Vancuissi's leaders did little to reign things in. Vancuissian privateers renewed their attacks on Pangari shipping, and in their enthusiasm attacked some Videssian ships also...

At this point, the colony of Mogui was being governed by Zhiri-Veka-Me, the famous explorer who had travelled to Chaunka lands a few years earlier. He had made sure that Mogui was fortified with a strong fort overlooking the river. By 663 it was under siege by Vancuissians armed with artillery, sailed in from the arsenals at Vancuissi. Vancuissi's standing army was now involved. War was still not officially declared, but the Ri-Panga reacted by sending reinforcements from Asia. Pangari's army was famously lacking in experience, and was not in good shape for fighting an overseas war. But following the signing of peace agreements with the United Empire, the Pangans felt secure enough to send quite a large number of soldiers. Veteran Taej and Pegurian mercenaries were also recruited.

The reinforcements were much too late to prevent Mogui falling to the Vancuissians. But from 664 to 665, there followed a series of chaotic battles in the dark forests south-west of Taroq territory. Despite having superior troops in most cases, the Vancuissians suddenly found themselves outgunned and outnumbered, and could not push much further east from Mogui. Vancuissian raiders and saboteurs were successful in causing a distraction behind Pangan lines, but raids into Taroq land also stirred up the natives and brought more allies onto the Pangari side. In late 665 AD, with things on the brink of full scale war, and Vancuissian trade being equally hurt by Pangari and Pegurian privateers in the middle of the Zeyris Ocean, another cease-fire was agreed upon. Both sides kept many soldiers in the area. The expansion of Vancuissian borders slowed down, as more and stronger forts needed to be built at every turn.

* Mogui is now in Vancuissian hands. The cost of the fighting has been much higher for the Pangans. Still, the Vancuissians have suffered losses among even their best frontier troops. The whole area has become more militarised and better defended. Zhiri-Veka-Me was captured, but later returned to the Pangari as a gesture of goodwill
* Relations between the Taroq and Pangari have increased further.
* Relations between Videssos and Vancuissi have been damaged due to 'accidental' attacks by Vancuissian privateers.

The Maru War: Rytarria's Zeyris Guild was reinforced with experienced soldiers, drawn from border garrisons in the jungles and mountains of west Asia. They were shipped across to Ryatarria's holdings on the east coast of North America, and began raiding into Maru territory around 663 AD. Allegedly, many Maru villages were attacked without mercy, with the few survivors being enslaved and used as forced labour by the Guild. The Maru warriors fought back using stealth and their knowledge of their terrain, but the war of attrition was not in their favour. They were simply outgunned and outnumbered, and lost their villages one by one. Some Maru peoples flocked to the town of Satim, which became quite well fortified. Others headed north, hoping for safety within Videssian borders. The rest dispersed into the western forests and sought refuge with the true natives.

* Rytarria's hold on the coast is more secure, but they have gained a bad reputation amongst the local people.
* Maru no longer counts as a unified country, but their culture lives on.

Videssian-Chaunka War: The writings of the Pangan explorer Zhiri-Veka-Me had depicted the Chaunka people as naive and primitive. Or at least, it seemed so to the Videssians, who began to cross Chaunkan borders in force after 664 AD. The Videssian colonists in North America were feeling more confident- new forts were being built along the coast, and their forces were being reinforced, while the rival Pangari and Rytarrian colonists were occupied with wars of their own.

Initially, the Videssians had little trouble in fighting off the Chaunka border patrols. But the Videssians ran into trouble as they neared the Chaunkan stronghold of Tho. It was a difficult approach through rugged hilly terrain, which was ideal for ambushes. The Videssians faced a continual rain of arrows during the day, and attacks by sword-wielding fanatics at night. Chaunka warbands seemed to be steaming into the area from the west. The Videssians lost enthusiasm for pushing any further, at least not without large reinforcements. But by 669 AD they had built the fine fort of Kybos, guarding the easiest route of attack from Tho. Kybos also became a gathering point for exiled Maru peoples seeking Videssian protection...

* Relations between Chaunka and Videssos are now hostile.

Hocatelco civil war: In 666 AD, one of Hocatelco's lesser generals began a revolt near the eastern city of Atehtlam, and quickly began to gather support from the locals. After several small victories against loyalist garrisons, Quiatal Chini had made enough of an impression to be declared a 'god' by devout Altocists, a saviour who had come to rid them of their Emperor - who was now dismissed as a 'false god', bastard child of the hated foreign Pangari-Quipian usurper dynasty.

A large army of Altocist fanatics and foreigner-hating peasants overran the capitol within weeks. Such an uprising was not surprising. But it was not a clean takeover - other rival factions were in a position to take large swathes of the country for themselves, including pro-Ceinurissian warlords of the west coast, who were able to purchase some heavy firepower from their Thulean friends. The aggressive Noachi also invaded from the north, allegedly to regain their old homelands from the empire.

Trade through the straights was hardly affected during all the fighting, as the navies of Gunthii, Pegu and Pangari keep it mostly free of trouble. They also managed to rescue some rich foreigners from the coast before angry mobs got their hands on them. But others suffered a cruel fate. The Altocists have made few friends so far.

* Hocatelco is now in turmoil. Most of the former empire is split between the pro-Thulean warlords of the west coast, and the followers of the 'god' Quiatal Chini in the middle, and an alliance of warlords on the eastern peninsular.

The Yihamco War: In 665 AD, a Ceinurissian Aonsaise navy ship was allegedly attacked and by Sturmhaus privateers while on patrol south of Noagar. Many Ceinurissian nobles were outraged, especially the hot-headed militarists. The Sturmhaus denied that any ship on their payroll would dare to deliberately attack the Aonsaise's navy. But in any case, piracy in the area was getting out of control.

Spurred into action, the Ceinurissians attempted to hold a neutral 'board of arbitration' to decide the future of the Yihamcoross islands. The legitimacy of this was doubtful for anyone but the Ceinurissians and the Gunthii. The Asturian League was not represented in any way, despite having increasing influence across the Euris ocean. As for the Yssians and Pangari - who were invited - the Yssians were not particularly helpful, while the Pangari were busy organising the defence of their North American colony and took little interest. Anyway, the arbitrations came to the conclusion that the state of Sturmhaus was itself responsible for many crimes - including unlawful slavery and piracy - and was now to be disbanded by force.

The Gunthii were already prepared for war, and now set sail with Ceinurissian blessing. The CA also sent arms, supplies, and some of its best leaders to assist. In 666 AD, a powerful Gunthii fleet sailed right into Sua harbour and opened fire. Sturmhaus's capitol fell in a swift and bloody battle - the city famous both for its debauchery and flowing wealth went up in flames, leaving many civilian dead.

At the same time, the 'United Islands' was declared by pro-Ceinurissian nobles who had been able to organise a revolt in Sturmhaus's western territories, based on opposition to slavery and various liberalist ideals. Sturmhaus was gradually squeezed out of existence, but it did not go without a fight. Their remaining ships and forts were well armed, thanks in part to the sale of arms by the Ceinurissians in previous years.

By 669 AD, much of the Yihamcoross remained in disorder. The Gunthii had chosen their battles carefully, and although many pirate harbours had been cleaned out, they had not committed garrisons to holding islands they saw as unprofitable. In the end, many former Sturmhaus privateers and slavers simply disappeared away into the vastness of the Southern Euris ocean. The 'United Islands' had also got off to a slow start as it struggled to deal with the emancipation of thousands of former slaves. This allowed the majority-Saxonguille population of Saint Belda to declare their own independence, which was an annoyance for the Thuleans.

* Sturmhaus is no more.
* The 'United Islands' now exist, opposed to slavery and forced labour of all kinds.
* 'Saint Belda' now exists, and is seeking support from Gallica and Rove.
* Gunthii's army has taken moderate losses. Gunthii's fleet has also taken losses, but gained leadership.
* Relations between Gunthii and the CA have improved. Relations between Gunthii and the United Islands are still uncertain.
* Sturmhaus slavers have moved into northern Oluhanik with the blessing of local leaders, setting up sugar and fruit plantations with enslaved criminals and a few slaves brought from the Yihamcoross islands.

Kulo-Chimuk war: Starting in 663 AD, these two rival states in South America resumed hostilities. Both see themselves as rightful heirs to the former Chimuko Empire. Kulo, with access to Thulean and Pangari arms dealers, and more aggressive leadership, has so far been able to defeat Chimuk armies, and currently has the city of Uxil under siege. But Chimuk manpower is still greatly superior, and nothing is certain yet.

Tusca and Mycenae: The Razynists slowly expanded their area of control, but were unable to crush the pocket of Levanquist fanatics at Almos, or the traditionalists at Romae. Troops from Pisae and Vengano reinforced Romae and began to upgrade its defences. In the far north of former Tuscan territory, the province of Tarcedon had been left alone long enough to become established as another new state, ruled by traditional republicans, fiercely opposed to the Razynists, and loosely allied with the Vengano-Pisaeans. At this time the Razynists were more interested in establishing their radical new political order in the Tuscan heartland, which they did with some success. The Razynist leaders vowed to reform agriculture and industry within 10 years, and make Tusca more productive than ever was before. By 669 AD there had been some progress, but disorder remained, and the economy was still in very bad shape.

Mycenae was troubled by a series of assassinations and acts of sabotage carried out by fanatical cultists, the 'Sons of Iaptus', devoted to Mycenean independence and the return of a mythical golden age. This slowed down the process of rebuilding after the Tuscan wars, which was otherwise being generously funded by Antalya. Indeed, most Mycenaeans seemed to accept overall rule by the Antalyans, at least as a better option than Razynist chaos. The Razynists still had a lot to prove, and the exiled aristocrats and 'enemies of the people' had naturally painted a very bleak picture of Razynism to outsiders. The 'Works of Markus Razynah' were published and dispersed by the Razynists wherever possible - particularly to Mycenae and Germanica - which began to improve their image, or at least spread their ideas to a wider audience. Though the anti-authoritarian message of these books had already caused them to be banned in many places.

At sea, the Pisaean fleet was still in control of the western mediterranean, in alliance with the Venganese, and to some extent the Asturians also. The Razynists had control of the old shipyards, and began to build their own ships, though they still lacked suitable crews and captains to lead them. Nevertheless, Pisae was already overstretching itself after committing to the defence of Romae. The Venganese offered arms, supplies and money to Pisae, in exchange for a 'temporary' 50-year lease of the island of Buto...

* Tarcedon now exists, a state with roughly similar ideology to the original Tusca - a moderate, fairly liberal republic, seeing itself spanning both Tuscan and Mycenean cultures.

Librian civil war: As feared, the position of Libria's vassal-king became fatally weakened, as native warlords plunged their country into a messy civil war. The Germanicans and the Antalese each wanted to exert their influence on the Librians at this point. Germanican nobles who were already established in the country with their own lands and strongholds. Antalya was able to gain the support of some of the natives, but others still held faith in Phosism and refused to deal with the Rationalists out of principle. In 664 AD, when a fairly large and powerful Germanican army arrived from the east and joined with the local Germanica nobles, it wasn't long before most of Libria was under their rule, and Germanican law was being imposed. It seemed that 'old' Libria fought and lost its last battle in the fields around Leipzen.

But the remnants of the warlord's forces rallied behind one last native champion, Sigvan 'the furious', a charismatic one-eyed veteran of many battles. Sigvan could do little more than wage a guerrilla war in western Libria against the Germanicans and their supporters. But he made an impression on Librians living in Koruzian territory, and began to gather recruits from across the border, and allegedly had some dealings with the Antalyans also. By 669 AD, the cause for a truly independent Libria was still alive. But the Germanicans had so far been fair and mostly honourable in their rule of the west, and had held back from forcing Aeonism on the whole population. The Librian people remained as divided as ever.

* Libria is now a vassal of Germanica, and Libria's king is simply a puppet for Germanican nobles. Rebellion is still ongoing in the west.
* Germanica's army has taken minor losses

The secession of Mecklenjurg: This coastal province was ceded by the Hebridean League to the Aeonist kingdom of Juhtland in early 661 AD. Both the Yssians and Germanicans seemed eager to avoid a war between their respective allies. It was a bloodless victory for Aeonism - or at least, a near-bloodless victory, as there were some riots between local Ultimists and Aeonists. Juhtland's soldiers sided with the Aeonists. Many Ultimists of Mecklenjurg ended up emigrating to the Ceinurissian Aonsaise or elsewhere in the 'Yssosphere'.

The secession of Mecklenjurg was a blow to Hebridean prestige, but things only got worse. In the following years, the old Clan Council was disbanded by the ruling unionist faction. In agreement with the Yssians, it was replaced by a new Guild Council, which was now given dual authority over both the Yssian Republic and the Hebridean League. Saint Gustparsberg became a 'free city' and an occasional meeting ground for the combined councils.

For some of the Pictish aristocracy, this was all too much to take. They refused to recognise the Guild Council, and their lands effectively became small rebel states. The Hebridean 'Lord Protector' Dunnol Tornbraer essentially became irrelevant. But despite Yssian pressure for the use of force, no battles were fought. Political wrangling carried on until 668 AD, with little sign of any settlement being reached. Meanwhile the Olesian peoples, near the border with Freiland, took advantage of the confusion to declare their own independence...

* The Hebrideans are now effectively 'vassals' of the Yssian Republic.
* Olesia has yet to be recognised by any outside power, and a war with the Picts is looking possible.

The South Euris Guild: In 661 AD, a new faction rose to power in the Yssian republic, booting the moderate republicans out of power. They were a mix of the old militarists and Thulean restorationists, who had joined forces after some compromises were made on both sides. The 'Yssianists' were not content with the established order in the Euris Ocean, and now decided that the Yssian Republic should have its own overseas colonies. And so the South Euris Guild was created in 662 AD, despite the protests of many other aristocrats. Their goal was the establishment of colonies in the far south, in the lands of the Himut. The only problems were the Daran, Sung Taej and United Empire colonies that already existed in that part of the world...

In 663 AD, the Yssian colony of Junthii was founded on the borderlands between Sung and Daran colonies on the northern Himut coast. This was a serious effort, with hundreds of troops, many ships, large quantities of supplies, and some noteworthy leaders in command. The Yssians expanded aggressively inland, attacking several native tribes, and had soon claimed a large chunk of territory. Eventually, though, they became involved in fire-fights with the well-armed Sung colonists. Things escalated into a frontier war with the Sung which lasted between 664 and 666 AD, during which several Sung ships were captured or sunk, and the Yssians even sacked the Sung colony of Tiarzu...

But in 666 AD, the Sung fought back from their inland colony of Murazu. By this point, the Sung had various made overtures to the natives, and many tribes were eager to aid the Sung while getting revenge on the Yssians. More Sung ships also arrived offshore, and several inconclusive naval battles were fought. Sending supplies across such a vast distance was difficult, even for the Yssians. Their supply problems weren't helped by the Daran League, which kept as far out of the troubles as possible. The Yssians were inevitably forced back to defend Junthii, and in the end they used most their remaining gold and supplies to barter an uneasy cease-fire with the Sung Taej and the natives.

Meanwhile, other Yssian expeditions were exploring the eastern Himut coasts. With the founding of Enrig on a pleasant patch of coastal land, the Yssians seemed to set themselves up for a future conflict with the United Empire colonists, without finding anything of real value to trade back home. The Yssians were also rumoured to have explored far to the south, though apparently losing several ships to the treacherous icy waters.

Back in the Counille peninsular, support for the 'South Euris Guild' was now drying up. Even the hard-line Yssianists began to withdraw support. Despite great efforts, the venture had returned no profit, and no further reinforcements were sent. But it had at least brought some talented navigators and captains to the attention of the Yssian navy.

* The ruling Yssiansist faction has been discredited over these events. Even amongst the Yssianists, most do not want to change the cooperation with the other leagues into competition.
* Relations between the Yssian Republic and the other Thulean nations of the Euris Ocean have been worsened, especially the Daran League.
* Relations between the Yssian Republic and the Sung Taej are now hostile.
* Relations between the Sung Taej and local Himut peoples are much improved.
* The Sung's colony of Tiarzu has been damaged.

North African Wars: Haman found itself set upon by Aeonist crusaders, Oryxians and the Antalyans, all within the space of a few years.

* see 'major event'!

Countries:

Yssian Republic: The reformed and united Guild Council was seen as a positive step by most, although the trouble in the Hebridean islands was a concern. Another concern was the rise of the 'Yssianist' faction. A wave of enthusiasm died down after the South Euris Guild episode. Lord Protector Prince Gustharii remained in power, although in a weakened position, since he did not fully back the Yssianists and was no longer supported by the moderates either. Dissent also seemed to be growing among the upper classes, especially those who already had wealth from peaceful trade, and feared that erratic leadership of the Republic would ruin everything...

Asturian League: Asturia could not keep up its shipbuilding efforts, but its fleet had already become one of the largest in the world. It was a quiet time in Astura while her aristocrats and diplomats were busy overseas. The Asturians founded the Mediterranean Alliance with Vengano and Pisae, made separate treaties with Gallica and the Daran League - including the purchase of the small island of Mirin. Asturia was gaining prestige and influence, while the image of the Yssian Republic was being tarnished. Asturia's leaders gained more support. It no longer seemed possible that Asturia's nobles would simply cave in to Yssian pressure for annexation.

Still, many were uneasy about being too assertive just yet. Asturia's trade with Oryx - including large amounts of weapons, it is said - complicated relations with Gallica and Vengano, in the wake of the Aeonist crusading in North Africa. Asturia's leaders also meddled with trade and tax - taxes were generally lowered, but traders were now to be taxed a portion of their profits instead. A 'Merchant's League' was also created to give more control over traders. These measures were not so popular among the merchant-aristocracy. The expanding bureaucracy also tended to eat up any extra revenues.

Gallica: Some of Germanica's engineers found their way to this country. New building works went hand in hand with new trade treaties, as Asturian merchants were given little less than a monopoly over Gallica's ports. There were benefits from this - Asturian money paid for new docks and shipyards - but it also left room for corruption and exploitation. Other merchants in the country - especially Yssians - were not too happy with these events either. For now, closer ties with the Asturians were welcomed by the majority of Gallica's nobles as a useful counter to Rove's influence. The country was definitely getting richer, but was still overshadowed by its northern neighbour.

After ascending to the throne, the new king Artur VII began to promote 'Old Gallic' culture, while subtly discriminating against Theosists and the ethnic-Umidians of the south west. Again this was something most of the nobles approved of, but it was also an invite for the kind of fanatical Aeonism being revived in Rove, and was a departure from old King Artur VI's reign, when a careful balance had been reached with the minorities. Old hatreds were still easy to revive, and any uprising in the south-east would not be great news for trade.

Daran League: After the sale of Mirin to Asturia, some of Daran's nobles were worried that their other territories would begin to disappear one by one. Still, a closer alliance with the Asturians was welcomed, as the African continent seemed to be getting more dangerous. There was also much anger towards the Yssians after their colonisation efforts in the southern Euris, which seemed to undermine the Daran League's role in that part of the world. Daran's nobles moved even closer to the Asturians as a result. Also, a new academy of sciences and engineering was opened in Phaos, attracting some of the best minds in Africa and from across the Euris Ocean. By 668 AD, new machines were in use along the Daran coast to help with wine-making and refining raw sugar imported from the east.

Freiland: A sudden increase in the size of Freiland's army was noted with disapproval by Germanica and Rove. This was a result of a recruitment drive across the country. It has been rumoured that the system of command in Freiland's army had undergone some big changes. New state-of-the-art forts were also being built along the border with Rove. From the outside, it seemed that the country was taking a militaristic turn. But Freiland's leaders were still interested in new-fangled manufacturing and agriculture. A treaty with Gelderland gave Freiland easier access to the sea, and seemed to be helping trade on both sides of the border.

Germanica: The obsession with road building continued, and new canals began to be built also. Travelling between the main cities of Germanica was now much easier than just a few decades ago. New towns and villages began to spring up at crossroads and any stops along the main routes. Though, the scale of the empire still left room for highway bandits, a few of which rose to fame and notoriety this time. The border with Tusca and its former territory was well guarded, but still saw a lot of trouble with raiders and smugglers. Elsewhere, the Emperor's foreign policy with regard to Libria and North Africa was not working out quite as well as had been hoped. But his appointment as 'defender of the faith' by Holy Patriarch Jaronus I - who just so happened to be a Germanican himself - more than made up for that. Germanica had a hold on Lenierde and the Aeonist church at this time, which made things easier for the Emperor.

Within the government, the 'Reformists' now had the most people in high places. They continued to abolish old tariffs, promoted free trade, and steadily chipped away at the feudal system, granting some rights to even the poorest peasants. Needless to say, this was not popular with many traditional aristocracy - especially those involved in the west and Libria - but Emperor Gunther I was now in a stronger position, and his weight was enough to prevent any real protest for the time being.

Rove: In contrast to Germanica, the Roviens made a huge fuss about the campaign in Africa, even before Prince Louis had set sail. A propaganda war against Theosists was also set in motion, and fanatical views became fashionable again. Hard-line Aeonists gained more political power. The ongoing captivity of Prince Louis was the source of much anger and shame, but he was still seen as a great hero. King Phillip III made one final tour of Aeonist monasteries and reliquaries, where he was funding more rebuilding and expansion work, before retiring to the refurbished Palace of Roves, now an old and sick man. Royal officials were eager for Louis' return before his father's inevitable death. The reputation of Louis' younger brother, Henry, the next in line to the throne, had already been tarnished by claims that he was conspiring to have Louis killed in captivity, and planned to take the crown for himself.

Macrabi: Facing criticism for his unprovoked conquest of Tamlki, Kaliphan Jammen Sayyad I withdrew from political life for several years, and quietly toured to sacred places of Theosim, allegedly spending countless hours in prayer and meditation. But there was little hope for any rebellion, as the top positions of government were filled by fiercely loyal supporters of the Kaliphan. A trial of one prominent noble suspected of treachery seemed enough to frighten the rest into submission - even though the accused was eventually declared innocent. With the decline of Haman, Macrabi seemed to be the dominant force in Africa, but its position was unclear. Under Jammen's rule, the empire seemed threatening towards Kzame, the Ismailists, the Aeonist invaders, Rationalists, Tarrists and just about everyone else.

Antalyan Empire: Bazilevs Demetyr I added 'Hegemon of Mycenae' to his title and by 664 AD saw his borders expanding into Africa also. New trading houses came into being, Antalyan economy began to pick up, despite the vast expenditures of military upkeep, rebuilding in Mycenae, and work on the great 'Golden Conclave' of Agre - the huge structure was finally beginning to take shape by 669 AD. Large scale reforms took place in the army and navy, which almost got in the way of the campaign in North Africa rather than helping it, but Antalyan generals managed to hold things together. A conference of engineering and mechanics was held in Antalyak to show off the best Antalyan innovations, and also to attract inventors from overseas. Confidence was running high, as both Rationalism and the empire itself were gaining greater influence abroad, and Antalyan armies had so far seemed invincible in battle. But Demetyr I also ordered new fortifications to be built around the main cities in the south, just in case...

United Empire: Atash Tajarak I continued with his epic building works. But despite vast amounts of funding and manpower, progress remained slow - especially as several large earthquakes struck the mountains west of Okitash, brining landslides crashing down on canals and roads. Troubles among the empire's southern vassals provided only minor distractions. Meanwhile, drill instructors were sent out to army garrisons across the empire, by special order of Tajarak I, to raise the standard of training. After news of the alliances with Videssos and Pangari, this sparked rumours that the empire was preparing for war with Antalya. In any case, the empire remained in a confident mood as 669 AD drew to a close.

Videssian Empire: A cultural golden age began. Videssos was close to achieving a common sense of identity amongst the various different cultures of the empire. But as a result, more Hojo, Champa and Nakuri nobles took seats amongst the Torus of Videssos, which naturally caused upset amongst the old guard. They had little problem with the eastern Skovyans at least. In any case, Avtokrator Alanis II was now in a strong position, and scored more points by ordering a renovation of the sacred Grand Temple of Phos. His signing of an alliance with the United Empire also met with general approval. Unfortunately, his long-time supporter Patriarch Mentor II died in indecent circumstances - allegedly while in the company of a 'sacred maiden of pleasure'. The Phosist hierarchy was withdrew for their customary extended period of contemplation before declaring a new leader of the faith.

Rytarrian Empire: Crown Prince Tovaul led the construction of the great 'Hippodrome' in Altin Tiepe, designed as a giant arena for horse and chariot racing, amongst other things. Due to the scale of the project, building work was still going on in 669 AD. But it was a way for Prince Tovaul to raise his reputation, and he was well prepared to take the throne after the death Khaizar Auranz I in 667. As Khaizar Tovaul III, he encouraged a united culture for the empire. This met with approval from the Tianese majority, but didn't go down well with the steppe peoples, or the western Rayamese population. By 669 AD, Tovaul was getting heavy-handed with the Rayamese and encouraged harsh crack-down on dissidents both within the empire and the vassal state of Gaiyvaria. On the surface, the Rayamese resistance seemed to die down, but rumour has it that they have simply gone further underground, and are getting better organised, possibly with help from outside powers. Tovaul also showed had a more enlightened side as he visited academies and engineering works in the Antalyan Empire, spreading rumours that he had fallen under the spell of Rationalism.

Sung Taej: King Taichang became 'Grand King' in 661 AD, at the age of 70. What this actually meant was his retirement from the throne. The young King Haoming became the new king proper. Under his rule - with more than a little help from his talented advisors - the Sung state continued to promote manufacturing and trade links across the southern hemisphere. With trade came diplomacy also. Sung envoys were sent to Tonhela, Zhizhou and Himutshakla in particular, with scholars and civil engineers in tow. Most of these missions met with success, doing much to increase the influence of Sung Taej. This was all the more important as the Sung were feeling increasingly isolated by Pangari and the United Empire on the great continent.

The role of the 'Majestic Court' also began to change under King Haoming's rule, as he encouraged the nobility to voice their personal and social concerns there, not just political issues. This helped to ease tensions and bound the nobility slightly closer to the King. It also involved him in the struggle between feudal lords and the 'progressives' at court. King Haoming leaned towards the latter, which caused some upset. The King also issued the 'Edict of Righteous Conflagration', granting religious freedoms in Sung territory, and even allowing foreign missionaries into the country. Antalyan Rationalists were especially quick to take advantage.

Pangari: The two Pegurian brothers, Teka-Ne and Tanaka-Ki, continued their efforts to promote manufacturing and steam power as the way forward for Pangari. Still, they were frustrated at every turn by the tangled, stagnant political system. The influential science-houses did not want anyone to profit from any new machine or method that wasn't already patented and controlled by them. The old republicans had new laws passed every few years to limit the use of new machinery and protect traditional craftsmen. Teka-Ne eventually moved into politics himself, and slowly began to chip away at the established order, allowing Tanaka-Ki to set up some successful ironworks and steam-powered weaving mills in the capitol by 669 AD. Still, progress fell short of what they had been hoping for.

Meanwhile, The diplomat Tirik Seka-Tami returned from Antalya and set up his own Rationalist 'conclave' in the city of Panga, which began to attract interest from local Taoists and Orhadists. Overseas, the results of the Second Mogui War did not exactly inspire confidence. The country remained in a fairly pessimistic mood at this time.

Ceinurissian Aonsaise: Apart from new colonies to the north of Socota and Imawa territory, the frontier did not see very much growth. This was a time of political manoeuvring in the CA. The threat of a takeover by pro-militarists was skilfully dealt with, aided by the fact that some of the influential hot-heads left the country to go and fight in the Yihamcoross - and not all of them the side of Gunthii and the CA. Back home, the offices of Consuls and Quaystis were established with a combination of military and civil powers. Moddis Douh, an immigrant from Mecklenjurg, rumoured to be an ex-fraudster, was given the office of Quaystis and the task of eroding the power of wealthy pro-militarists, usually by attacking their financial assets. This he did was much success. Some embittered militarists left the country altogether, to settle in Vancuissi or Ys. A new military academy was established on the island of Hutan, which indoctrinated officers with the idea of 'duty and patriotism'. By 669 AD the government of Lord Protector Arturii Dumail was looking secure again. Even relations with the natives were improving slightly. The idea began to be discussed of building a giant 'Arch of Hope' in Nuys harbour to celebrate the first century of the Aonsaise, and several wealthy aristocrats promised to help pay for such a noble monument.

Awahan: In expectation of war with the Aonsaise, these people made great efforts to raise the standard of their metalworking. Thanks to the help of semi-Thuleanised peoples on their borders, they now had their own gunsmiths, and could build their own simple muskets. But their greatest strength still lay in their traditional tribal style of warfare, relying on aggression and terrifying close-combat weapons. As their strength grew, the Awahan continued to attract more tribes to its cause.

In 663 AD, Awahan's king dispatched Maharu Tiwa, a respected librarian, medicine-man and tribal elder who had spent some time living on the Ceinurissian frontier in the past, with an ambitious mission to seek contacts with foreign powers. Maharu managed to pay for passage on a Ceinurissian ship, but only made it as far as the bustling island port of Quichen in Quipeng. Although penniless, Maharu spent his last few years as a guest of the local envoy to the United Empire, and even obtained a letter of greeting and recognition from the mighty UE, though Awahan's king never got to read it. Maharu Tiwa died in 669 AD and Awahan remained isolated behind Ceinurissian borders.

Vancuissi League: As with the Aonsaise, this was a time of political changes in Vancuissi. The existing factions became more or less redundant. Liberalists were now the dominant force, with moderates and militarists as much weaker parties. As a result, Vancuissi's leaders were in a position to enact liberal reforms that went further than anything seen before, or at least since the early days of the Tuscan republic. Rights to property, liberty and freedom of religion were guaranteed and made official in law. There were also greater voting rights, although still only for males of European descent. Actual power in Vancuissi still lay with a republican elite, as it did in the Aonsaise and other Thulean countries. Freedom and liberty was already a reality out on the frontier - the new laws didn't really change anything there. But Vancuissi's government was making itself more open and accountable to the people. It all helped to improve Vancuissi's reputation abroad, and attract more immigrants than before.

However the wars with Pangari were having a slightly negative effect. Across the Zeyris Ocean, the Vancuissians were now just as easily portrayed as aggressive warmongers, pirates and cold blooded murderers, as they were enlightened liberalists. In any case, Vancuissian frontier forces remained in confident mood. Some wealthy Vancuissians were already buying rights to lands that were currently outside of Vancuissian borders, in expectation of further expansion in the years ahead.

Pegu: This country's leaders continued their enlightened policy of investing in civil engineering. Dams were built on some of the tributaries feeding into the Mula river to control flooding and prove irrigation. The sewage systems and water pipes of Takan Panaga were expanded even into the poorer districts. Government money also helped to build new ironworks around the city of Mula. The economy was slowly and steadily benefiting from all this. Pegu attracted more immigrants from Pangari, while Pegurian merchants and entrepreneurs often travelled back to the mother country, and relations remained good. A small number of Pegurian soldiers fought in the defence of Pangari's northern colonies, and earned a good reputation for themselves there.

Meanwhile the Videssians were feeling more confident about their colonies in North America. A probe against the Chaunka defences seemed successful, and had yielded some territory. Though it didn't help Videssos' diplomatic efforts with the other natives - it seemed to alienate the Silashi, while the Taroq were now under the influence of the Pangari. On the other hand, relations with Maru were more fruitful, even after they were attacked and dispersed by the Rytarrians. Phosism was also spreading in that part of the world, though it faced tough competition from Orhadism and Ultimism.

Tanyis: This sleepy island kingdom was stirred into action following the death of old King Gamaturundi, and the ascension of King Gamaturundi II to the throne. Thousands of new soldiers were recruited, and Tanyis's fleet was sent on trading and diplomatic missions to nearby islands. It is also rumoured that wealthy merchants from Gunthii and Asturia were granted permission to set up various mills and refineries on the island.

It seems the concept of 'Holy War' is not a thing of the past.

In 663 AD, Emperor Gunther I of Germanica gave his blessing for an army to aid the Republic of Vengano in Africa, to help push its borders further south, away from europe. Germanica's leaders went to great lengths to play this down as nothing more than their ongoing support for a fellow Aeonist state, a 'counter attack' against Haman's border raids. They even hoped that little would be known about it in Europe. An appeal went out to other Aeonist countries to assist, but his was not supposed to be a 'Crusade'. That word wasn't used until Prince Louis, heir to the throne of Rove, landed in Africa. Louis was an arrogant self-publicist, but also a charismatic leader, and he wielded greater influence due to the fact he arrived with a far larger and more disciplined army of Rovien soldiers than had been expected. As far as he was concerned, this was a great Crusade in the best Aeonist tradition. That view began to take hold as the combined army moved out into Haman's territory.

What the 'Crusaders' didn't know as that Oryx was also planning to strike at Haman, leaving its business with Segah unfinished for now. But Oryx was taking time to train and re-train its army, while carefully selecting its commanders, and preparing large stockpiles of supplies. Oryx's leaders were content enough to sit back and wait while their rivals fought the first battles.

The Crusader army was mostly made up of Germanicans and Roviens. Venganese troops made up a smaller portion. A collection of volunteers from Lenierde, Seculia, Gallica, Axemhaus, Norgar, Juhtland, and even the Yssian Republic made up the rest. It was certainly one of the largest armies the world had seen in recent times. Organisation was a serious problem, especially as Prince Louis often butted heads with the Germanican commanders. And most of the Europeans naturally had trouble adapting to the hot climate of North Africa. Nonetheless, the Crusaders made rapid progress - detachments sailing with the Venganese navy captured the eastern port Darez within a few weeks, and the main army soon reached the city of Abiona, nestled between the river branches of the fertile Oryx delta. Venganese bombard-galleys moved in from the Mediterranean coast. But Abiona's defences proved surprisingly strong, and they gave Haman enough time to assemble the strongest army possible. The Council of Ismail declared this a holy struggle, and called upon Ismailists from all across Africa and the Mediterranean to join together for the defence of their faith...

In the summer of 664 AD, Haman struck back in force, and the great battle of Abiona was fought. Even Osman Azrju, the living descendent of Ismail, made a personal appearance on the battlefield to inspire the Ismailist troops. What followed was either glorious clash of arms, or a chaotic shambles, depending on the source. In any case, the bodycount was rather high. The battle was fought under a hot sun, favouring the lightly armed but fanatical troops of Haman, as they were able to keep their strength up for longer. Haman's desert cavalry was also able to outmanoeuvre the Aeonist horsemen. Both sides made good use of muskets and cannons, though the Crusader's firearms were proved clearly superior on the day. The multi-barrelled, Tuscan-made 'organ guns' fielded by the Germanicans were notable for their morale effects if nothing else. Rovien's field artillery was also noted for its accuracy and hitting power. In any case, it was still a combination of sharp steel and sheer exhaustion that claimed the most lives.

The Crusader army became more disorganised as the day wore on. A final charge by Rovien's cavalry - allegedly led by Prince Louis himself - failed to change things in their favour. The Crusader army was suffering higher casualties, but they also had slightly more men to lose. Haman's leaders called off the battle at sunset, and withdrew west to regroup, believing they had done enough damage to prevent any Crusader assault on the city of Abiona. However, this was not the case. Within a week, Abiona had fallen to a renewed assault. Little restraint was shown by the embittered Aeonists - the whole population received brutal treatment, regardless of their actual faith they followed. Vengano had hoped to receive the newly conquered lands, but at the insistence of Prince Louis and his supporters, the 'Protectorate of Abiona' was declared. Regardless, it didn't last very long.

The armies of Oryx were now ready to move - well trained, well organised and eager to prove themselves. Haman still held the lands south of Abiona and Darez, but was hardly able to resist Oryx's progress north, especially with most of the local Umidian-speaking peoples welcoming the Oryxians at every turn. Oryx was determined to fight whoever it needed to reunite Umidian lands. But no sooner had they arrived at Abiona, than a large Antalyan army invaded Haman from the west. Haman's leaders decided to cut their losses in the east. The Aeonist garrison was left alone to face the Oryxians.

Many Aeonist troops had already returned to Europe, and Vengano was now only giving half-hearted support with its navy. Germanica and its closest allies were still trying to play down the 'Crusade' for fear of reviving Aeonist fanaticism in Europe. By this point, the aging Holy Patriarch of Lenierde, Philius II, had died in uncertain circumstances. His successor, Jaronus I, was a native of Dresden and a firm supporter of Germanica. The Aeonarchy of Lenierde also backed Germanica's position. And so, Emperor Gunther I of Germanica was declared 'Defender of the Faith', for his efforts in Africa, Libria and Juhtland. This caused a huge rift with Prince Louis, who believed he had been promised the title by Philius II.

Despite all this feuding, the Aeonist garrison in Abiona rallied together for the fight. Prince Louis was still there, and refused to leave, at least until he had no choice but to stay. The Venganese navy provided a trickle of supplies for a few weeks, until they were unwilling to risk anymore ships against Oryx's cannon emplacements. In early 665 AD, various Aeonist forces tried to break the siege from the east. Contrary to how it was later portrayed, the Germanicans fought as hard as anyone. Several inconclusive battles were fought east of Abiona. The Oryxians were now fielding the largest army that their country could support. In terms of firepower and discipline, their troops were more of a match for the Europeans, and they had some excellent commanders at their disposal. Their forces simply could not be budged. In late Spring of 665 AD, Germanica and Rove were just starting to plan for a new, larger army to relieve Abiona, when news came of its surrender. After having narrowly survived one assault by the Oryxians, but with starvation and disease taking hold, not to mention the fact that the city was full of Oryxian sympathisers, Prince Louis had reluctantly given up the fight.

As for the Antalyans, their invasion went as smoothly as their intervention in the Tuscan wars. Only minimal resistance was met at first. The Antalyans quite sensibly split their efforts between the Mediterranean and Ak-Dynghez coasts, and were never far from supply ships in either case. Haman's navy had only been able to harass the Aeonist ships, and could do little else against the Antalyans. As Antalya's Turuk cavalry reached the Mediterranean port of Adioza, Haman gathered almost all of its remaining forces at Jera, and prepared for a final apocalyptic battle to defend the holiest shrines of Ismailism and Savarian culture. However, the Antalyans were bluffing - their northern force had already turned back, while their southern army was storming towards Al-Na'ar. Haman eventually moved its army southwards, and a series of confused battles took place around Tania, with both sides making use of camel troops and light horsemen. It seemed to be enough to halt the Antalyan advance. Or more likely, Antalyan generals had already fulfilled the orders of their Bazilevs, and were unwilling to push any further into the cursed lands of Africa. A fragile cease-fire gradually took shape.

From 665 to 668 AD, Oryx continued to battle with both Haman and Aeonist forces. A cease fire was finally agreed with Haman, after Oryx overran all the lands it wanted west of Abiona. Meanwhile, the remnants of the 'Protectorate of Abiona' were annexed into Vengano, and a combined Aeonist force defended the hilly area around Darez. Venganese ships blockaded Orez, cutting off Oryx's access to Thulean trade from the Euris Ocean. Oryx still had ambitions to reclaim all Umidian lands, including those covered by Vengano's borders, and stubbornly refused any cease-fires with the Aeonists. By 669 AD, Oryx's leaders were already calling their country the new Umidian Empire...

* Prince Louis, heir to the throne of Rove, remains in the 'hospitality' of the Oryxians. Terms for his ransom have yet to be agreed...
* Oryx is still officially at war with Vengano, and its supporters. Cease-fires have been agreed on other fronts.
* Haman's army has taken the most losses. Its economy and conscript pool have been greatly reduced.
* The armies of Antalya, Oryx, Germanica, Rove, and Vengano have suffered moderate losses. Oryx's conscript pool has increased.
* Ismailist fanatics threaten to cause trouble, especially on the island of Buto and in the areas conquered by Antalya.

Random Issues:

Rytarrian Itching Sickness: This foul disease causes numbness, dizzyness, fever, burning skin irritations and finally an unbearable itching sensation over most of the poor victim's body. Since the disease first appeared in 668 AD, only half of those who developed symptoms have lived to tell the tale. An estimated fifty thousand have died so far. It has taken hold in the east Asian ports of Ormash and Sanash, as well as the Ghama and Palam islands in the Zeyris Ocean, where it is believed to have first appeared, before it was spread by Rytarrian traders. Any country bordering the Zeyris ocean may or may not wish to take action to halt the spread of this disease, possibly at the cost of limiting trade...

The Unnamed Island: In the Zeyris Ocean south of Tarami, off the east coast of North America, a smouldering, blackened, sulphurous heap of rock has emerged from the waves. It grows larger with every passing year. Already, it is said to be large enough for a fortress to be built on it. Pangari scientists have visited the island and concluded that it will soon sink back under the waves. But no-one can say for sure. This barren hellish rock seems to have no real value, but ownership is already being contested by all the nearby powers...

Resolution of Previous Issues:

'The Coronation of Saint Vos': This famous painting remained in the hands of the Hebrideans, despite muted protests for its return to Rove. In 668 AD it was sold to a wealthy Ceinurissian merchant, and now resides in a manor house on the other side of the Euris Ocean.

Germanican hostages in Tusca: The Germanican 'spies' were released by the Razynist authorities. They had allegedly suffered some ill treatment at the hands of the locals, but were able to return to Germanica and tell their tales of the Tuscan wars to the imperial court.

Lost cities of North America: Rumours of the 'cities of gold' to the west of Urisi attracted fairly little attention from the wider world. Of the few adventurers who ventured there, many ended up settling down back in the Vancuissi League, apparently none the richer. Only the Vancuissians know for sure if anything has been found yet, and they are not telling.

Notes:

I need confirmation from both parties whenever any deals, treaties or any kind of agreements are reached. I asked for confirmation on a few things, but was too lazy (and possibly to busy also!) to ask about other miscellaneous stuff :o. So please include in your orders anything your people are doing with other countries. I wont assume you've agreed to do something just because the other person said so.

Spending points should be in one specific area - 'military' is really too broad. Size, training and leadership can go together, but they should be separate for army and navy, and also separate from fortifications. I let some people off this time.

Also, I refuse to promote Bazilevs Demetyr I to 'mighty' status, because Thlayli specifically asked me to do that, and I don't want to appear weak willed. So I'll say the Bazilevs has a speech impediment and a funny walk which ruins his image :p.

Finally, I allowed this update to get bigger than planned, because it had already been delayed a while... A kind of negative feedback loop there. I know its not healthy. All I can say is that I'll keep trying to break that habit!

Great update Daftpanzer!

In front of me, a coward begs upon his knees. Such a pathetic excuse for a man you are- you dare grovel to us while turning such a blind eye to your good friend? Look at how Antayla repays your hospitiality- their ignorant blight has set upon the skulls of the North, and now they seek to dominate the good peoples of the area. Give a sign of hope that your leadership isn't entierely corrupt and we may take our place.

From Ys Republic

I can only appologise for this gross act of missconduct, I'm sure it was just a small teething problem of the Guild Council and will, of course, not happen again. As a sign of good will we will cede the colony of Junthii to the Daran League. We hope you will forgive this and continue to trade peacefully.

Pegu would be interested in forming an alliance between our 2 close nations. While Pangari and Pegu would surely aid one another in any conflict thanks to our histories it would be great to make this official.

Pegu would also be willing to send more volunteers to aid Pangari in North America if they are required.

OOC: Awesome update.

We must ask you to immediately cease any hostilities with Vengano and return Rove's Prince as a sign of good will, or we will cease our trade with you, blockade your ports, and then land our army upon your soil, roughly in that order. Vengano is our ally, and we will not allow the weapons which you procured through us to be fired at one more Venganese army or you will be destroyed. Prince Louis should be returned as well to show that you have no ill will towards Vengano and its benefactors.

To: Vengano
From: The Asturian League

We must apologize for the actions of Oryx, and our own actions, as it is we who made it possible for them to acquire such a powerful military. We did not foresee any attacks into Haman, only more into Segah. However, we are even now attempting to pressure Oryx into returning Prince Louis, as well as declaring a cease-fire with Vengano and the other Aeonist parties in Haman, with the intent of first destroying Haman and then finding an acceptable peace between Oryx and yourself.

To: The Yssian Republic
From: The Asturian League

We applaud you on your both peaceful and mutually acceptable merging of the Yssian Republic and the Hebridean League. However, we now have another matter to bring to your attention: your interest in gaining colonial possessions in the South Euris Ocean. While the Asturian League does not wish to expand any further than it has, the Daran League, our good allies, have possessions there, and you have shown your interests to be in opposition to their own.

Looking at this statement, we wish for the Yssian Republic to leave the southern hemisphere alone. You may trade there, you may send ships there, but we are utterly opposed to the possession of any territory by the Yssian Republic in the southern hemisphere without it first declaring both the reasons for possession of such territory and the intended method acquisition of such territory.

Considering, however, that you have eliminated such ventures for the time being, we will not bring this matter up again. It is important that the Thuleans work together rather than against each other.

There is one other matter. The Olesian people should be allowed to decide for themselves whether or not they wish to be part of any union between the Hebridean League and the Yssian Republic. They are not Thulean and, from what I can tell, they do not wish to be. We ask you to leave them alone or, hopefully, to assist them in their growth and development until such a time as they may feel comfortable with rejoining the Hebridean League.

To: The Ceinurissian Aonsaise, Gunthii
From: The Asturian League

As no merger of Thulean nations has taken place, we will not condemn your actions. You have taken a reasonable course, one that will prevent piracy and disorder among the Yihamcoss Islands, a good thing for all traders.

To: Saint Belda
From: The Asturian League

We understand your position in seceding. However, as both Gallica and Rove lack the ability to send you aid across the ocean, we are more than willing to assist you, as Gallica has been a nation most kind to Asturian traders, and Rove has assisted our allies in Vengano. Please, tell us that which you need to develop and we will do our best to send it to you.

To: The Imperial Republic of Antalya
From: The Asturian League

It has recently come to our attention that you have developed a number of more powerful steam engines. We would be very interested in acquiring some of these engines for use on a certain project we are developing. Are you willing to sell to us at least one? We will pay well, and any designs yielded from its use we will be made available to Antalya.

We revolt to bring order and tranquility to this land, and you assist the rabble who wishes to devolve us to the days of the corrupt Sturmhaus! You would wipe out every victory we have claimed over the vile House of Filth that ruled these islands all in the name of imperialist intervention. We had thought the Asturians better than this for sure.

Or perhaps it is a lack of understanding that has us at this crossroads. Come to Dunotari, we will accommodate you well and perhaps show you the benefits of a more...united United Islands. St. Belda is a cause not worth sacrificing young Asturian soldiers for.

From: The Ys Republic

The Yssians and Aeonists are not exactly what you could call friendly, yet I find myself forced to agree with them. You will return all the land you have illegally siezed and you will return the crown prince. If you refuse, you will lose all trade with the Yssian Republic, the Hebridean League and any Thulean Nations that I can convince to join the embargo. Following this, my fleet will be joining that of Asturia in blockading all of your ports and ending all overseas trade. Also, if the Aeonists declare war on you, they will have my upmost support, perhaps you think you can take on all of Europe?

From Ys
To: the world

The days of irrational Ys leadership are now at an end, we appologise for the irresponsible actions made during the transition in government. The nobles who suggested the colonisation of the South Euris Sea have been discreditted and have all resigned from government. The colony of Junthii will be ceded to the Daran League, all hurt parties will get special trade rates in our ports for the next 15 years in compensation.

To: The United Islands
From: The Asturian League

St. Belda has led a peaceful and successful rebellion in the wake of the fall of Sturmhaus. They do not house pirates, nor slavers. They wish only to be recognized as a nation independent from the Thuleans, a reasonable request from an island that is, for the majority, non-Thulean. We are sure that the United Islands would not wish to dominate a non-Thulean island that does not wish to be so dominated, as this is highly reminiscent of Sturmhaus and will cause internal strife, something which you can, we are sure, avoid by allowing their independence and recognizing them as an independent nation

Having said this, the Asturian League will not support them militarily, even if the United Islands initiates a conflict with St. Belda, unless it seems that the United Islands is mistreating the people who live there.

To: Oryx
From: The Asturian League

We would hope that Vengano would find your proposed deal acceptable. Regardless, you will return Rove's prince as a gesture of good will, and you will do it now. Only then, we are sure, will Rove and Vengano allow peace talks to proceed in a reasonable manner. We do not wish war, but if you wish it, we will eliminate you, as you will then be a threat, rather than an aid, to our interests in norther Africa and our allies interests.

We have had good relationships with Oryx in the past, and will use these to try and avert our entrance into the war. You bring nothing to the table but threats, none of which will help an end to the conflict. You should be thanking the Asturian League for demanding the return of your Prince and staying quietly reasonable; instead, you continue to make threats to your enemies and insult the Asturian League, a possible ally in the upcoming conflict neither of which are helping your situation or ours. Perhaps you should rethink your words, if not the intent?
