Rove: In contrast to Germanica, the Roviens made a huge fuss about the campaign in Africa, even before Prince Louis had set sail. A propaganda war against Theosists was also set in motion, and fanatical views became fashionable again. Hard-line Aeonists gained more political power. The ongoing captivity of Prince Louis was the source of much anger and shame, but he was still seen as a great hero. King Phillip III made one final tour of Aeonist monasteries and reliquaries, where he was funding more rebuilding and expansion work, before retiring to the refurbished Palace of Roves, now an old and sick man. Royal officials were eager for Louis' return before his father's inevitable death. The reputation of Louis' younger brother, Henry, the next in line to the throne, had already been tarnished by claims that he was conspiring to have Louis killed in captivity, and planned to take the crown for himself.
Macrabi: Facing criticism for his unprovoked conquest of Tamlki, Kaliphan Jammen Sayyad I withdrew from political life for several years, and quietly toured to sacred places of Theosim, allegedly spending countless hours in prayer and meditation. But there was little hope for any rebellion, as the top positions of government were filled by fiercely loyal supporters of the Kaliphan. A trial of one prominent noble suspected of treachery seemed enough to frighten the rest into submission - even though the accused was eventually declared innocent. With the decline of Haman, Macrabi seemed to be the dominant force in Africa, but its position was unclear. Under Jammen's rule, the empire seemed threatening towards Kzame, the Ismailists, the Aeonist invaders, Rationalists, Tarrists and just about everyone else.
Antalyan Empire: Bazilevs Demetyr I added 'Hegemon of Mycenae' to his title and by 664 AD saw his borders expanding into Africa also. New trading houses came into being, Antalyan economy began to pick up, despite the vast expenditures of military upkeep, rebuilding in Mycenae, and work on the great 'Golden Conclave' of Agre - the huge structure was finally beginning to take shape by 669 AD. Large scale reforms took place in the army and navy, which almost got in the way of the campaign in North Africa rather than helping it, but Antalyan generals managed to hold things together. A conference of engineering and mechanics was held in Antalyak to show off the best Antalyan innovations, and also to attract inventors from overseas. Confidence was running high, as both Rationalism and the empire itself were gaining greater influence abroad, and Antalyan armies had so far seemed invincible in battle. But Demetyr I also ordered new fortifications to be built around the main cities in the south, just in case...
United Empire: Atash Tajarak I continued with his epic building works. But despite vast amounts of funding and manpower, progress remained slow - especially as several large earthquakes struck the mountains west of Okitash, brining landslides crashing down on canals and roads. Troubles among the empire's southern vassals provided only minor distractions. Meanwhile, drill instructors were sent out to army garrisons across the empire, by special order of Tajarak I, to raise the standard of training. After news of the alliances with Videssos and Pangari, this sparked rumours that the empire was preparing for war with Antalya. In any case, the empire remained in a confident mood as 669 AD drew to a close.
Videssian Empire: A cultural golden age began. Videssos was close to achieving a common sense of identity amongst the various different cultures of the empire. But as a result, more Hojo, Champa and Nakuri nobles took seats amongst the Torus of Videssos, which naturally caused upset amongst the old guard. They had little problem with the eastern Skovyans at least. In any case, Avtokrator Alanis II was now in a strong position, and scored more points by ordering a renovation of the sacred Grand Temple of Phos. His signing of an alliance with the United Empire also met with general approval. Unfortunately, his long-time supporter Patriarch Mentor II died in indecent circumstances - allegedly while in the company of a 'sacred maiden of pleasure'. The Phosist hierarchy was withdrew for their customary extended period of contemplation before declaring a new leader of the faith.
Rytarrian Empire: Crown Prince Tovaul led the construction of the great 'Hippodrome' in Altin Tiepe, designed as a giant arena for horse and chariot racing, amongst other things. Due to the scale of the project, building work was still going on in 669 AD. But it was a way for Prince Tovaul to raise his reputation, and he was well prepared to take the throne after the death Khaizar Auranz I in 667. As Khaizar Tovaul III, he encouraged a united culture for the empire. This met with approval from the Tianese majority, but didn't go down well with the steppe peoples, or the western Rayamese population. By 669 AD, Tovaul was getting heavy-handed with the Rayamese and encouraged harsh crack-down on dissidents both within the empire and the vassal state of Gaiyvaria. On the surface, the Rayamese resistance seemed to die down, but rumour has it that they have simply gone further underground, and are getting better organised, possibly with help from outside powers. Tovaul also showed had a more enlightened side as he visited academies and engineering works in the Antalyan Empire, spreading rumours that he had fallen under the spell of Rationalism.
Sung Taej: King Taichang became 'Grand King' in 661 AD, at the age of 70. What this actually meant was his retirement from the throne. The young King Haoming became the new king proper. Under his rule - with more than a little help from his talented advisors - the Sung state continued to promote manufacturing and trade links across the southern hemisphere. With trade came diplomacy also. Sung envoys were sent to Tonhela, Zhizhou and Himutshakla in particular, with scholars and civil engineers in tow. Most of these missions met with success, doing much to increase the influence of Sung Taej. This was all the more important as the Sung were feeling increasingly isolated by Pangari and the United Empire on the great continent.
The role of the 'Majestic Court' also began to change under King Haoming's rule, as he encouraged the nobility to voice their personal and social concerns there, not just political issues. This helped to ease tensions and bound the nobility slightly closer to the King. It also involved him in the struggle between feudal lords and the 'progressives' at court. King Haoming leaned towards the latter, which caused some upset. The King also issued the 'Edict of Righteous Conflagration', granting religious freedoms in Sung territory, and even allowing foreign missionaries into the country. Antalyan Rationalists were especially quick to take advantage.
Pangari: The two Pegurian brothers, Teka-Ne and Tanaka-Ki, continued their efforts to promote manufacturing and steam power as the way forward for Pangari. Still, they were frustrated at every turn by the tangled, stagnant political system. The influential science-houses did not want anyone to profit from any new machine or method that wasn't already patented and controlled by them. The old republicans had new laws passed every few years to limit the use of new machinery and protect traditional craftsmen. Teka-Ne eventually moved into politics himself, and slowly began to chip away at the established order, allowing Tanaka-Ki to set up some successful ironworks and steam-powered weaving mills in the capitol by 669 AD. Still, progress fell short of what they had been hoping for.
Meanwhile, The diplomat Tirik Seka-Tami returned from Antalya and set up his own Rationalist 'conclave' in the city of Panga, which began to attract interest from local Taoists and Orhadists. Overseas, the results of the Second Mogui War did not exactly inspire confidence. The country remained in a fairly pessimistic mood at this time.
Ceinurissian Aonsaise: Apart from new colonies to the north of Socota and Imawa territory, the frontier did not see very much growth. This was a time of political manoeuvring in the CA. The threat of a takeover by pro-militarists was skilfully dealt with, aided by the fact that some of the influential hot-heads left the country to go and fight in the Yihamcoross - and not all of them the side of Gunthii and the CA. Back home, the offices of Consuls and Quaystis were established with a combination of military and civil powers. Moddis Douh, an immigrant from Mecklenjurg, rumoured to be an ex-fraudster, was given the office of Quaystis and the task of eroding the power of wealthy pro-militarists, usually by attacking their financial assets. This he did was much success. Some embittered militarists left the country altogether, to settle in Vancuissi or Ys. A new military academy was established on the island of Hutan, which indoctrinated officers with the idea of 'duty and patriotism'. By 669 AD the government of Lord Protector Arturii Dumail was looking secure again. Even relations with the natives were improving slightly. The idea began to be discussed of building a giant 'Arch of Hope' in Nuys harbour to celebrate the first century of the Aonsaise, and several wealthy aristocrats promised to help pay for such a noble monument.
Awahan: In expectation of war with the Aonsaise, these people made great efforts to raise the standard of their metalworking. Thanks to the help of semi-Thuleanised peoples on their borders, they now had their own gunsmiths, and could build their own simple muskets. But their greatest strength still lay in their traditional tribal style of warfare, relying on aggression and terrifying close-combat weapons. As their strength grew, the Awahan continued to attract more tribes to its cause.
In 663 AD, Awahan's king dispatched Maharu Tiwa, a respected librarian, medicine-man and tribal elder who had spent some time living on the Ceinurissian frontier in the past, with an ambitious mission to seek contacts with foreign powers. Maharu managed to pay for passage on a Ceinurissian ship, but only made it as far as the bustling island port of Quichen in Quipeng. Although penniless, Maharu spent his last few years as a guest of the local envoy to the United Empire, and even obtained a letter of greeting and recognition from the mighty UE, though Awahan's king never got to read it. Maharu Tiwa died in 669 AD and Awahan remained isolated behind Ceinurissian borders.
Vancuissi League: As with the Aonsaise, this was a time of political changes in Vancuissi. The existing factions became more or less redundant. Liberalists were now the dominant force, with moderates and militarists as much weaker parties. As a result, Vancuissi's leaders were in a position to enact liberal reforms that went further than anything seen before, or at least since the early days of the Tuscan republic. Rights to property, liberty and freedom of religion were guaranteed and made official in law. There were also greater voting rights, although still only for males of European descent. Actual power in Vancuissi still lay with a republican elite, as it did in the Aonsaise and other Thulean countries. Freedom and liberty was already a reality out on the frontier - the new laws didn't really change anything there. But Vancuissi's government was making itself more open and accountable to the people. It all helped to improve Vancuissi's reputation abroad, and attract more immigrants than before.
However the wars with Pangari were having a slightly negative effect. Across the Zeyris Ocean, the Vancuissians were now just as easily portrayed as aggressive warmongers, pirates and cold blooded murderers, as they were enlightened liberalists. In any case, Vancuissian frontier forces remained in confident mood. Some wealthy Vancuissians were already buying rights to lands that were currently outside of Vancuissian borders, in expectation of further expansion in the years ahead.
Pegu: This country's leaders continued their enlightened policy of investing in civil engineering. Dams were built on some of the tributaries feeding into the Mula river to control flooding and prove irrigation. The sewage systems and water pipes of Takan Panaga were expanded even into the poorer districts. Government money also helped to build new ironworks around the city of Mula. The economy was slowly and steadily benefiting from all this. Pegu attracted more immigrants from Pangari, while Pegurian merchants and entrepreneurs often travelled back to the mother country, and relations remained good. A small number of Pegurian soldiers fought in the defence of Pangari's northern colonies, and earned a good reputation for themselves there.
Meanwhile the Videssians were feeling more confident about their colonies in North America. A probe against the Chaunka defences seemed successful, and had yielded some territory. Though it didn't help Videssos' diplomatic efforts with the other natives - it seemed to alienate the Silashi, while the Taroq were now under the influence of the Pangari. On the other hand, relations with Maru were more fruitful, even after they were attacked and dispersed by the Rytarrians. Phosism was also spreading in that part of the world, though it faced tough competition from Orhadism and Ultimism.
Tanyis: This sleepy island kingdom was stirred into action following the death of old King Gamaturundi, and the ascension of King Gamaturundi II to the throne. Thousands of new soldiers were recruited, and Tanyis's fleet was sent on trading and diplomatic missions to nearby islands. It is also rumoured that wealthy merchants from Gunthii and Asturia were granted permission to set up various mills and refineries on the island.
Major Event
- North African Wars -
It seems the concept of 'Holy War' is not a thing of the past.
In 663 AD, Emperor Gunther I of Germanica gave his blessing for an army to aid the Republic of Vengano in Africa, to help push its borders further south, away from europe. Germanica's leaders went to great lengths to play this down as nothing more than their ongoing support for a fellow Aeonist state, a 'counter attack' against Haman's border raids. They even hoped that little would be known about it in Europe. An appeal went out to other Aeonist countries to assist, but his was not supposed to be a 'Crusade'. That word wasn't used until Prince Louis, heir to the throne of Rove, landed in Africa. Louis was an arrogant self-publicist, but also a charismatic leader, and he wielded greater influence due to the fact he arrived with a far larger and more disciplined army of Rovien soldiers than had been expected. As far as he was concerned, this was a great Crusade in the best Aeonist tradition. That view began to take hold as the combined army moved out into Haman's territory.
What the 'Crusaders' didn't know as that Oryx was also planning to strike at Haman, leaving its business with Segah unfinished for now. But Oryx was taking time to train and re-train its army, while carefully selecting its commanders, and preparing large stockpiles of supplies. Oryx's leaders were content enough to sit back and wait while their rivals fought the first battles.
The Crusader army was mostly made up of Germanicans and Roviens. Venganese troops made up a smaller portion. A collection of volunteers from Lenierde, Seculia, Gallica, Axemhaus, Norgar, Juhtland, and even the Yssian Republic made up the rest. It was certainly one of the largest armies the world had seen in recent times. Organisation was a serious problem, especially as Prince Louis often butted heads with the Germanican commanders. And most of the Europeans naturally had trouble adapting to the hot climate of North Africa. Nonetheless, the Crusaders made rapid progress - detachments sailing with the Venganese navy captured the eastern port Darez within a few weeks, and the main army soon reached the city of Abiona, nestled between the river branches of the fertile Oryx delta. Venganese bombard-galleys moved in from the Mediterranean coast. But Abiona's defences proved surprisingly strong, and they gave Haman enough time to assemble the strongest army possible. The Council of Ismail declared this a holy struggle, and called upon Ismailists from all across Africa and the Mediterranean to join together for the defence of their faith...
In the summer of 664 AD, Haman struck back in force, and the great battle of Abiona was fought. Even Osman Azrju, the living descendent of Ismail, made a personal appearance on the battlefield to inspire the Ismailist troops. What followed was either glorious clash of arms, or a chaotic shambles, depending on the source. In any case, the bodycount was rather high. The battle was fought under a hot sun, favouring the lightly armed but fanatical troops of Haman, as they were able to keep their strength up for longer. Haman's desert cavalry was also able to outmanoeuvre the Aeonist horsemen. Both sides made good use of muskets and cannons, though the Crusader's firearms were proved clearly superior on the day. The multi-barrelled, Tuscan-made 'organ guns' fielded by the Germanicans were notable for their morale effects if nothing else. Rovien's field artillery was also noted for its accuracy and hitting power. In any case, it was still a combination of sharp steel and sheer exhaustion that claimed the most lives.
The Crusader army became more disorganised as the day wore on. A final charge by Rovien's cavalry - allegedly led by Prince Louis himself - failed to change things in their favour. The Crusader army was suffering higher casualties, but they also had slightly more men to lose. Haman's leaders called off the battle at sunset, and withdrew west to regroup, believing they had done enough damage to prevent any Crusader assault on the city of Abiona. However, this was not the case. Within a week, Abiona had fallen to a renewed assault. Little restraint was shown by the embittered Aeonists - the whole population received brutal treatment, regardless of their actual faith they followed. Vengano had hoped to receive the newly conquered lands, but at the insistence of Prince Louis and his supporters, the 'Protectorate of Abiona' was declared. Regardless, it didn't last very long.
The armies of Oryx were now ready to move - well trained, well organised and eager to prove themselves. Haman still held the lands south of Abiona and Darez, but was hardly able to resist Oryx's progress north, especially with most of the local Umidian-speaking peoples welcoming the Oryxians at every turn. Oryx was determined to fight whoever it needed to reunite Umidian lands. But no sooner had they arrived at Abiona, than a large Antalyan army invaded Haman from the west. Haman's leaders decided to cut their losses in the east. The Aeonist garrison was left alone to face the Oryxians.
Many Aeonist troops had already returned to Europe, and Vengano was now only giving half-hearted support with its navy. Germanica and its closest allies were still trying to play down the 'Crusade' for fear of reviving Aeonist fanaticism in Europe. By this point, the aging Holy Patriarch of Lenierde, Philius II, had died in uncertain circumstances. His successor, Jaronus I, was a native of Dresden and a firm supporter of Germanica. The Aeonarchy of Lenierde also backed Germanica's position. And so, Emperor Gunther I of Germanica was declared 'Defender of the Faith', for his efforts in Africa, Libria and Juhtland. This caused a huge rift with Prince Louis, who believed he had been promised the title by Philius II.
Despite all this feuding, the Aeonist garrison in Abiona rallied together for the fight. Prince Louis was still there, and refused to leave, at least until he had no choice but to stay. The Venganese navy provided a trickle of supplies for a few weeks, until they were unwilling to risk anymore ships against Oryx's cannon emplacements. In early 665 AD, various Aeonist forces tried to break the siege from the east. Contrary to how it was later portrayed, the Germanicans fought as hard as anyone. Several inconclusive battles were fought east of Abiona. The Oryxians were now fielding the largest army that their country could support. In terms of firepower and discipline, their troops were more of a match for the Europeans, and they had some excellent commanders at their disposal. Their forces simply could not be budged. In late Spring of 665 AD, Germanica and Rove were just starting to plan for a new, larger army to relieve Abiona, when news came of its surrender. After having narrowly survived one assault by the Oryxians, but with starvation and disease taking hold, not to mention the fact that the city was full of Oryxian sympathisers, Prince Louis had reluctantly given up the fight.
As for the Antalyans, their invasion went as smoothly as their intervention in the Tuscan wars. Only minimal resistance was met at first. The Antalyans quite sensibly split their efforts between the Mediterranean and Ak-Dynghez coasts, and were never far from supply ships in either case. Haman's navy had only been able to harass the Aeonist ships, and could do little else against the Antalyans. As Antalya's Turuk cavalry reached the Mediterranean port of Adioza, Haman gathered almost all of its remaining forces at Jera, and prepared for a final apocalyptic battle to defend the holiest shrines of Ismailism and Savarian culture. However, the Antalyans were bluffing - their northern force had already turned back, while their southern army was storming towards Al-Na'ar. Haman eventually moved its army southwards, and a series of confused battles took place around Tania, with both sides making use of camel troops and light horsemen. It seemed to be enough to halt the Antalyan advance. Or more likely, Antalyan generals had already fulfilled the orders of their Bazilevs, and were unwilling to push any further into the cursed lands of Africa. A fragile cease-fire gradually took shape.
From 665 to 668 AD, Oryx continued to battle with both Haman and Aeonist forces. A cease fire was finally agreed with Haman, after Oryx overran all the lands it wanted west of Abiona. Meanwhile, the remnants of the 'Protectorate of Abiona' were annexed into Vengano, and a combined Aeonist force defended the hilly area around Darez. Venganese ships blockaded Orez, cutting off Oryx's access to Thulean trade from the Euris Ocean. Oryx still had ambitions to reclaim all Umidian lands, including those covered by Vengano's borders, and stubbornly refused any cease-fires with the Aeonists. By 669 AD, Oryx's leaders were already calling their country the new Umidian Empire...
* Prince Louis, heir to the throne of Rove, remains in the 'hospitality' of the Oryxians. Terms for his ransom have yet to be agreed...
* Oryx is still officially at war with Vengano, and its supporters. Cease-fires have been agreed on other fronts.
* Haman's army has taken the most losses. Its economy and conscript pool have been greatly reduced.
* The armies of Antalya, Oryx, Germanica, Rove, and Vengano have suffered moderate losses. Oryx's conscript pool has increased.
* Ismailist fanatics threaten to cause trouble, especially on the island of Buto and in the areas conquered by Antalya.
New alliances / treaties:
The 'Zeyris Triad' was signed between Videssos and the United Empire, with Pangari as a unofficial supporter.
The 'Mediterranean Alliance' was signed between the Asturian League, Vengano and Pisae.
The Asturian League signed separate trade and defence agreements with Gallica and the Daran League.

Random Issues:
Rytarrian Itching Sickness: This foul disease causes numbness, dizzyness, fever, burning skin irritations and finally an unbearable itching sensation over most of the poor victim's body. Since the disease first appeared in 668 AD, only half of those who developed symptoms have lived to tell the tale. An estimated fifty thousand have died so far. It has taken hold in the east Asian ports of Ormash and Sanash, as well as the Ghama and Palam islands in the Zeyris Ocean, where it is believed to have first appeared, before it was spread by Rytarrian traders. Any country bordering the Zeyris ocean may or may not wish to take action to halt the spread of this disease, possibly at the cost of limiting trade...
The Unnamed Island: In the Zeyris Ocean south of Tarami, off the east coast of North America, a smouldering, blackened, sulphurous heap of rock has emerged from the waves. It grows larger with every passing year. Already, it is said to be large enough for a fortress to be built on it. Pangari scientists have visited the island and concluded that it will soon sink back under the waves. But no-one can say for sure. This barren hellish rock seems to have no real value, but ownership is already being contested by all the nearby powers...
Resolution of Previous Issues:
'The Coronation of Saint Vos': This famous painting remained in the hands of the Hebrideans, despite muted protests for its return to Rove. In 668 AD it was sold to a wealthy Ceinurissian merchant, and now resides in a manor house on the other side of the Euris Ocean.
Germanican hostages in Tusca: The Germanican 'spies' were released by the Razynist authorities. They had allegedly suffered some ill treatment at the hands of the locals, but were able to return to Germanica and tell their tales of the Tuscan wars to the imperial court.
Lost cities of North America: Rumours of the 'cities of gold' to the west of Urisi attracted fairly little attention from the wider world. Of the few adventurers who ventured there, many ended up settling down back in the Vancuissi League, apparently none the richer. Only the Vancuissians know for sure if anything has been found yet, and they are not telling.

We hear troubling rumours of Macrabi's contempt for our republic. It seems clear that an alliance between our peoples would be the best thing for our continent, while any war between us would surely be the undoing of both our peoples. I ask you to consider the many benefits of peace and cooperation instead...

Notes:
I need confirmation from both parties whenever any deals, treaties or any kind of agreements are reached. I asked for confirmation on a few things, but was too lazy (and possibly to busy also!) to ask about other miscellaneous stuff

. So please include in your orders anything your people are doing with other countries. I wont assume you've agreed to do something just because the other person said so.
Spending points should be in one specific area - 'military' is really too broad. Size, training and leadership can go together, but they should be separate for army and navy, and also separate from fortifications. I let some people off this time.
Also, I refuse to promote Bazilevs Demetyr I to 'mighty' status, because Thlayli specifically asked me to do that, and I don't want to appear weak willed. So I'll say the Bazilevs has a speech impediment and a funny walk which ruins his image

.
Finally, I allowed this update to get bigger than planned, because it had already been delayed a while... A kind of negative feedback loop there. I know its not healthy. All I can say is that I'll keep trying to break that habit!
